Writing in Bordeaux, while we wait for new baby…

2

At time of writing, no sign of baby – see below for an update as soon as he/she arrives!

A year ago I booked to go to my usual haunt of Chez Castillon near Bordeaux, so having left it till the last moment, I jetted off on Friday, knowing I had several options to come home early as and when Lauren my daughter went into labour.

Janie and Mickey the hosts run their place just like I do down in Devon, and it was so lovely to have the situation reversed. All meals made, no chores to do, own room with own bathroom (ours don’t – yet, but I’m working on it!) which meant I could spread out and make a mess if I wanted to. Highlights included, as ever, walking Rory the dog down by the river Dordogne, being with like-minded company talking about plots and characters and how to get a book deal. Plus of course lots and lots of sleeeeeep!! By Tuesday, I was feeling very relaxed and loving every minute of this annual leave.

I did manage to get lots more words written. And some research. My 5th novel is based in the early 1920s and as some of you will know, is set in a world where women aren’t offered birth control and back street abortion is a regular thing as a method of avoiding another mouth to feed. One bit of research I discovered was that even in the mid-1920s, as women were about to get the vote universally, doctors still didn’t offer contraception as a matter of course. My characters on their caravans touring the country would have found huge resistance against this massive change in the way women are treated. There was some feisty feminism going on around the dinner table too, during mealtime banter – for instance, whether it’s right or wrong to call a female actor and actress. Or an actor. Why is it demeaning to indicate sex? It got a bit heated at times – but it all added to the diversity of the stay. I managed to buy some new tablecloths from the Monday Market in Castillon la Bataille too – I’ve wanted two more to match the others we use in our Wednesday tea rooms down in Devon, so that’s another to-do ‘to-done’!

It was a fab trip and I’m so glad I got to go in the end, as Lolly has ended up being so late with her first baby. (Come back to read here if there’s an update before next week’s blog – or follow me on all my social media, especially Facebook, (links below) and I will keep you informed when there’s news I can share!

I’m back on QVC Sunday night, with a Bobbi Brown show at 9pm, all being well, and the Monday Today’s Special Value.

This weekend’s highlights:

Today (Friday 28th) – if you have a standard calf width you’ll love the new Marc Fisher knee high boot (it’ll appear here once launched)

Saturday – Dyson bring us another AM09 Hot and Cool Quiet Purifier Fan offer – the one with the timer – in interest-free instalments as well as free postage – what a great way to see why so many people rely on this incredible technology to keep their homes warm or cool all year round. Specially good for hot flushes in the middle of the night, with the remote and the timer! See the whole Dyson range on our website here and look out for ‘as is’ deals.

Sunday – Amazon Echo Dot  – what a great way to get Alexa into your life, or into another location, with the little next generation Echo Dot voice controlled speaker and fact-finder, music machine, alarm, timer, sleep sounds player etc. etc.… Great price, in a choice of one or two Dots, and my lovely telly hubby Lee Hohbein will be bringing you the offer at a super price as usual.

And watch out on Sunday at midnight for the launch of Monday’s #TSV, the super Benefit fab new five-piece Set featuring the bestselling Rollerlash mascara, already on early bird order link, so you can see it and buy it now by clicking here.

This week’s Big Deals
These great offers only last a week and are shown on our sister channels – but don’t delay, the offers end at midnight on Sunday 30th September. For beauty loves see the Philosophy five-piece All Things Purity Face Collection; if you’re looking for some new Christmas lighting see the adorable Home Reflections set of five pre-lit glass baubles with Christmas scenes inside; and fashion fans will love the Hacci swing top from ModernSoul Hacci

Next week’s offers are below

SNIPPETS

Charlie Cat …

Can you guess who this feline is named after? No prizes…! He’s stealing hearts over at Chez Castillon and is a fairly recent addition. He and Rory the softy dog get on really well, but woe betide any mouse who tries to make an appearance – as we experienced whilst we were there!!!  He can’t spin the cane but his expression isn’t far off the original is it!*

Aren’t people wonderful?

Look at this – tweet of the week – warms the cockles of your heart, doesn’t it? Just think of all the trouble they’d have gone to, to put that sticker up there for the little lad. Considering all the embittered tweets flying around this conference week featuring teachers who want everyone to agree with them, nasty comments about fellow man and so on, this is wonderful.

Barry and me

The local paper in Holsworthy in Devon kindly featured me and my singing buddy, Barry Parsons, (aka The Singing Councillor!) The write up from the local Sheepwash verger was very complimentary and we were happy to help raise over £500 for the church roof! And they’ve asked us to do it again on December 11th. It’s the day I’ve got a special Christmas wreath-making class in the village hall too, that’ll be fun. So hopefully I’ll be able to fit it all in! Something tells me this Christmas is going to be very busy too – with two grandbabies, where last year I had none!

Blooper of the week

Book of the Week

Very exciting to have top author Jane Corry on my book blog on my website this week. All three of her novels have been Sunday Times bestsellers. This week’s Book of the Week, The Dead Ex, has a very unusual story about how the concept came about, which Jane explains on her interview over on my website. It’s always interesting finding out how a book ends up the finished article. This one has tons of detail about prison life, epilepsy and aromatherapy amongst other things. I like it when a book is educational. And a cracking good storyline as well about someone being framed. Highly recommended.

Watch

I know I’m away but King of Thieves is what I would be watching at the cinema if I was at home. It’s the true story of the Hatton Garden jewellery heist, starring some real golden legends of the British performing world – Michael Caine, Michael Gambon, Ray Winstone, Paul Whitehouse, Jim Broadbent… those are enough reasons to go see it already! Funny, original and very watchable. From the trailer at least! If you see it, let me know what you think!

Facebook vlog of the week

From the picturesque banks of the river Dordogne in Bordeaux – making memories for those rainy months ahead! Go here to see it – and ‘like’ the page so that you see the first news about my new grandbaby coming any time now! Plus I’ll update on other social media too, and of course on my website newsletter and blog. And if I’m allowed, there’ll be a ‘stop press’ addition to this blog at some point over the next seven days too!

Next week’s highlights:

Monday – Launching Sunday at midnight, with me and Lisa, the fab Benefit five-piece on Early Bird link – see above.

Tuesday – Radley London return with a super Hobo bag

Wednesday – classy brand Joules bring us their Heathcote padded coat for a special one day low price

Thursday –Sun Joe are back with a practical solution to flat tyres – the digital cordless air compressor

Friday – and then it’s Christmas is Coming event time on 5th October with a fab weekend of super offers. I’m looking forward to the Molton Brown big Christmas TSV which will go on early bird order link before this blog is out of date!

Next week on the blog

All about the arrival of my second grandbaby, along with a great news if you love choice! It’s our 25th birthday on Monday 1st October and there’ll be fab shows all the way, including on our sister channel Style – which has a live TV Takeover and goes live with fashion, accessories, jewellery etc between 3pm and 7pm every day – even weekends – from now on. Plus the introduction at the end of the week to a new presenter – Kathryn – Will has done an interview with the lovely lady that you will soon be able to see on his blog, and she will debut with Julia on Friday fashion at 6pm over on Style channel. Good luck!

Best wishes

King of Thieves…I was expecting just another caper movie and it was much more than that. I found it very weird to watch actors who almost always play lovable characters, playing absolute…not lovable characters! Recommended. And I’m glad you got to have your hols!

    Hi Debbie
Congratulations to QVC on their 25th Anniversary. I discovered you about 16 years ago, just after I lost my best friend to cancer. I was so depressed and had no interest in anything. We had just bought our first new view box, and my husband was flicking through the channels, and came across QVC. I started watching the shows regularly, and eventually bought something. Since that day I only shop with QVC. I can’t be bothered with shopping on the high street. QVC has gone from strength to strength. I just love it. I’ve bought something from every Dept. Everybody that works at QVC are extremely professional, especially customer services.
Nice to see you back after your holiday, but still waiting to hear the good news about your new grand child. Hopefully this week!

    Stay safe
    Heather
