Women in the spotlight

This week has already had quite a strong focus on females, with it being International Women’s Day yesterday, and of course it is Mother’s Day on Sunday.

I really liked the idea that QVC had, making yesterday about Inspirational Women and (from the line-up on air) I would also say aspirational.

It was the first time I had done a full hour with the lovely Lisa Snowdon and her range of diamond jewellery. I do like the fact that some of her designs have a very modern, edgy twist but she has some more classic lines too. Particular favourites of mine were the ‘laugh til you cry’ necklace and also the horoscope constellation pendants – I believe both are still available if you wanted to check them out on our website.

It was also the first time I had worked with Amanda Holden, she was very thorough at checking that all the mugs were clean and also that there were no undesirable contents in the Today’s Special Value trunks after being pranked by Craig for Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway. Read Craig’s blog to watch the team pull it off and hear all about it.

She was a pleasure to work with – I love that she has named things in her BundleBerry range after her grandma. In fact, when I asked her live on-air who she would cite as the most inspirational women in her life, she did say her Mum and her Grandma.

A lot of people said the same when I asked the question on Twitter. One person also mentioned the Queen, and I would have to agree. She is the same age as my Mum, 91, and is incredible to still do all the things she does.

It must be that generation because my Mum is fabulous too. She still teaches dancing once a week and she drives herself there, which leads me on to a funny story. While I would never condone speeding, I can’t resist sharing this with you.

When I spoke to her the other day she said she had received a letter from the police and that they were going to prosecute her. I asked what for, and she said speeding! I must confess, I laughed. Apparently, they had reduced the speed limit from 40 to 30mph on a road that she has driven on for years, and she hadn’t noticed.

Mind you, she was doing 42mph so she was still technically speeding. She is actually a very able driver with good reaction times, despite her age, but maybe the fine will encourage her to slow down a bit.

Although it’s too late to receive anything ordered on QVC in time for Mother’s Day, you may want to have a look at Diamonique’s tennis bracelet – the featured piece for this month – as something you could give her afterwards.

It comes in three lengths (17cm, 19cm and 21cm) and a choice of three colours. It is different from my Diamonique tennis bracelet in terms of the stone size (mine are much smaller) and the setting metal, but the stones still have the same sparkle they had and I’ve had it for over 23 years!

You could also have a look at Saturday’s Gatineau Today’s Special Value, if you fancy treating your Mum to something other than chocolates and flowers. It includes the Tan Accelerator, which I use along with the Ultrasun one when I want more of a lotion than a gel.

Whatever you get for your Mum, I hope she enjoys her day – I feel very blessed to still have mine.

Have a great weekend,
Julia xx

Hi Julia, your mum sounds amazing still taking dance lessons at 91. It’s my first Mother’s Day without my mum and I’m not really looking forward to it but I’m sure having my own children with me will make it better. By the way I have now finished Alice in Theatre Land and it was great. Take care. Sylvia x

      Hi Sylvia
I hope Mother’s Day was not too traumatic for you – as you say, I’m sure having your own children around will have softened the blow somewhat.
I’m pleased to hear you enjoyed Alice in Theatreland – if you feel inclined, a review on Amazon would be much appreciated.

Love reading your blog …my mum died in 1982 when I was 20 & she was only 45. I now have 3 children & 2 grandaughters, so I have mixed emotions on Mothering Sunday.Have a lovely day, I’m sure I will too .Xxx

      Hi Alison,
It is always so sad when someone leaves us too soon – 45 is no age. I hope Mothering Sunday wasn’t too difficult for you with your children & grandchildren.
So pleased you enjoy reading my blog

What a wonderful mom Julia. Like the the Queen , grew up during the Second World War. Nothing Only things that slow them down are ill health and speeding. Bless them.

      Hi Josephine
I’m pretty sure living through WW2 & the aftermath (rationing etc.) had a huge impact on our older generation – in a good way. They seem to have a fabulous ‘can do’ attitude don’t they?

You may be a monkey but please don’t give up on green! You have mentioned a couple of times now that you shouldn’t wear it … wrong. You so suit vibrant jewel colours, a recent example a truly gorgeous emerald Butler Wilson sparkly top – divine. You also looked stunning in a bright red dress at Xmas. Not everyone suits colour … You do and QVC do gorgeous colourful clothing. So no “monkeying” around and embrace the chameleon within!

      Hi Tanya
Fortunately it is only for the year of the dog that ‘monkeys’ have to avoid green (& pink) to counterbalance certain negative aspects. I’m absolutely fine with reds, oranges, blues, purples etc. and I will definitely go back to green as I LOVE it.
Thanks for your kind comments btw

      Hi Elizabeth
Apparently, the team of people she has visiting (cleaner, hairdresser, gardener, reflexologist etc) are all calling her ‘speedie’ tees days!
Last week she drove to the dance studio in a near blizzard!!
      As you say, amazing

What an amazing lady your mum is, my mum was the same before she passed away, as well as looking after herself she also helped others, like you said it must be a generation thing because my mum would have been the same as yours.

      Hi Theresa,
Mostly Mum has epode looking after her these days, apart from the dancing & occasional elderly neighbours. Chris’s mum, age 83, is also really good at looking out for older friends.
