Winter weather, well fed birds & winning gardens

It’s blooming cold outside at the moment! We’ve not had that much snow here but the ground is frozen so there’s not that much I can do outside. One thing I have enjoyed is keeping the bird feeders topped up with my High Energy bird food. I just love watching the birds in my garden, and they’re certainly extra hungry in this cold weather. The beauty of high energy feeds is that they provide more energy faster to the birds and, considering that birds like blue tits can spend up to 85% of their daytime feeding just to survive in really cold weather, this high energy boost can make all the difference. Next weekend (24 and 25th Jan) is the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch, so I’m looking forward to spending a happy hour taking part and counting the different species in my garden.

Garden beauty

January is also the month for planning and looking ahead. I’ve started looking through the latest seed and young plant catalogues and getting inspired for the coming summer. Talking of getting inspired, Chris Bradley kindly sent me a video clip he filmed last September of Kathleen and Martin Redout’s garden in Wareham. The green fingered couple had just won the Best Front Garden category in The Sun newspaper’s gardening competition. I was delighted to learn that they used my Lawn Magic and Flower Power to help them produce such stunning results. See this lovely garden (and amazing lawn) for yourself by watching the video below.

Doesn’t it make you look forward to the summer!

Happy gardening,
