It’s beginning to look a little like Christmas
Now we are half way through November, we are definitely allowed to start buying presents, but what about playing Christmas music?! I’ve been playing it down in Devon since the start of October – every so often anyway. And what about putting up decorations? I was delighted this week when my wonderful pal Alix came back from her trip down under and we restarted our regular Tuesday catch ups in Hatherleigh. Where to our delight, they served us… Christmas Tree shortbreads! It’s certainly starting to be ‘that most wonderful time of the year!’ So what makes it that time for you? What signs definitely make you feel in festive mood?
I asked that on Facebook this week – go here to see the vlog where I discuss it whilst on one of my regular walks through pretty Devon countryside. And these are some of the replies – which resonate with you?
- Kelly Rees and Julie Ford said the big Christmas TV Ads
- Jayne Wentworth said when the Christmas party menu arrives – actually we are awaiting news of when our own presenter lunches will happen! Exciting!
- Sandra Jarrett said The Fairy tale of New York playing on the radio
- David Hannah said massive mountains of chocolates appearing (I used to pick open the sticky tape on the tin when I was a kid, and steal the best ones, pink fudge, purple caramel nut, and round toffee – then stick it back down again! We always had the orange creams left in our house – what about you?)
- Maria Bird and Lynn Walker said when the cola lorry comes on the telly
- Barbara Bennett said when shops on the high street start selling mince pies
- Jane Wood said seeing Christmas cake recipes in her weekly magazine
- And Lynn Dunford said it used to be going to Woolworths with her mum once they had the bedecked Christmas trees on display in the windows – ahhh yes we recall those halcyon days!
What about you?
These drawstring cosmetics bags arrived this week – amazing last minute gifts for yuletide!
I love this time of year, don’t you? Time to start watching Christmas films and wrapping pressies, methinks – including in the wonderfully easy Giftmate wrap set I just bought – get it here!
Lovely Nicola was my right-hand girl this week down in Devon as we needed some tasty vegan treats for our writer guests – seven of them! And Nic made this amazing brownie for dessert one night – made with avocado and dates! It was – delicious! I’m still off dairy, as much as I can, and this was perfect, I had it with non-dairy ice cream. Only half though – I saved this other half for later. In actual fact, I’m more into savoury stuff atm. Got to get back in shape for the big cruise next February!
Lovely Margaret and her pal Barbara came all the way from Liverpool as part of Margaret’s 70th birthday celebrations, so I was happy to show them round the retreat, even though the tea room is closed till spring, and met them for a tasty tea in the pub opposite. Margaret was top to toe in QVC stuff – and smelled of Tova fragrance too – what a trooper! Happy 70th my lovely and well done to your daughter Lisa for arranging it.
Me n sis n Family Fun
My lovely sister Linda was a bit poorly again this week but came out of hospital after a good dose of medicine and was ok for the Sunday get together – a regular meal to commemorate the ‘Derek Flint Cup’ – an annual golf comp in memory of my old dad. It was lovely to see all her clan, and my mum and her partner, and my little great niece Skye – who is now 14 months and says ‘want more’ at dinner! Bless! They are all growing so fast! The big family ‘cousin’s bash’ in December will be a massive do! And Blake and Phoebe, my little granddaughters, will meet some of them for the first time!
An unusual TiFFT!
Tongs in the toilets! Put in a pound, and you get three minutes of straighteners! Curled my fringe back to bouncy good ‘n’ proper in the loos of the pub! Courtesy of Holsworthy Mayor and new district councillor, Jon Hutchings – he got them online and put them in his pub!! Lol!
Blooper – hehe – trust Charlie! Poor Dale!
Going to see Widows at the cinema this week – I hope! Based on the novel that gave rise to the original TV series that was a smash hit in 1983 in the UK. I adored that series, so can’t wait for this one!
However, the big ‘watch’ recommendation this week has to be the most amazingly restored old World War One footage – it went out in some cinemas but also on Sunday night on the BBC – and is available to see on catch up now. ‘They Shall Not Grow Old’ is Peter Jackson’s transformation of archive footage more than a century old. He takes ancient black and white footage, recolours it, cleans it up and adds sound, bringing to life the people who can best tell the story of the Great War – the men who were there. See it on catch up soon as poss.
Book of the week
Wasn’t Jack Reacher’s latest outing fantastic!! You betcha it was. It’s the first book in ages where I’ve continued listening to it to see what happens, even when I got indoors. Finished it in record time. Next on my list is The Doll House by Phoebe Morgan who is coming to give a talk in Sheepwash next March about how to get a publishing deal as she’s a commissioning editor as well. Her new one is out before too long, so this will set me up to enjoy it!
Next week on QVC
Monday – MarlaWynne coatigan as above.
Tuesday – Skechers on the Gowalk Joy lace-up trainer boots.
Wednesday – JM Home by Julien Macdonald lamp with black silk shade. After the success last week of the lovely lamp from Amanda Holden’s range, BundleBerry (see the whole range here) this one should go well!
Thursday – a big tech #TSV and Panasonic return with a super 18mp bridge camera with a 60x ultra zoom and 4k video – what a great, substantial gift for someone special.
Friday – the Smile Box tooth whitening treatment that lasts for up to 5 months.
Next week – well it’s the week of the big op! I’m having it on Wednesday – it’s just a little keyhole surgery to tidy up my torn meniscus (did it years ago and aggravated it playing netball last summer – as you do! So I’ll be off for a bit. Wish me luck! Plus whilst I’m down there, more refurbishments – the start of the hard-fought en suites in two bedrooms, and more electrical works being done. Phew! Busy times!
