What a way to spend a weekend!

Hello there,

Half way through the week already, and in spite of all the rain we’ve had the only thing growing on my lawn are the weeds! I’ve decided to treat myself to some of Richard Jackson’s Lawn Magic in the autumn, which I’ve no doubt will double my chances of a moss and weed free back garden!

To be fair, considering we had no rain for almost two months, I’m surprised even the weeds survived. Of course the perfect answer would be a Peony faux flower arrangement – no watering required at all! We’ve got a Big Deal running all this week that features the sweetest peony roses in a silver vase.

I’ve tried to keep my watering down to a minimum but I have been refreshing my pots and hanging baskets. This is the first year I’ve started the baskets from just plug plants and I’m delighted with the results. My friend Jo had me in hysterics when we recently drove past a garden centre that had a huge sign asking “Do you have old hanging baskets?” “That’s a bit personal isn’t it?!” she retorted! Love her 🙂

Because we’ve been able to rely on the weather Colin and I decided to cram as much socialising as possible into the one weekend. It took a fair bit of planning and making up of beds, but Jo, her sister Debs and their partners all joined us for a BBQ on that blisteringly hot Friday night. We had such a laugh, and even managed to catch this cracking sun set in between gin cocktails! Just stunning.

We’d barely waved them off on the Saturday morning before my niece Clare arrived with her husband Cale. They’re settling into the UK really well, and have found jobs, and a flat to rent in Parsons Green. We really enjoyed catching up on all their news, and stayed up well into the night listening to music and watching the stars.

A while back I’d suggested to my three children that we all go to the seaside for a couple of days and stay in an Airbnb, but now that Sam has Diesel, and Honey is still small, we decided it would be just as much fun to stay home. We inherited a swimming pool when we moved here five years ago, and my intention had been to deck over it. I didn’t think for one moment it would ever be warm enough for us to actually use it, and up until last year I was right. However, looking ahead to when we might possibly move, it made sense to get a new pool liner and for Colin to refurb the stones around the edge.

This summer has been amazing, and although we don’t have heating in the pool, the water has been just the right temperature. We felt so lucky to have it on Sunday when in addition to Clare and Cale, my niece Emily, her husband Paul and their two boys arrived, my sister Jenny and Linda, and then Lucy and Honey, Jack, Sam and Diesel!

Cale, bless him, cooked the BBQ and we just had the best time playing games, chatting, keeping cool and enjoying the music that Colin chose for us. I took a few photographs for you, and have printed some for myself as a special memory. Lucy, Honey Sam and Jack all stayed with us until Tuesday, and I took them out to lunch before heading in for my shift at QVC. I felt quite tearful when I said goodbye to them… it made me realise how blessed I am to have them in my life, and just how special these times together are.

In spite of my best efforts, all this time in the sunshine has meant that my skin’s been looking a little dehydrated, so I was delighted to hear about Elemis’s brand new Pro-Collagen Overnight Matrix, complete with Drone Technology! That basically means a bit like a GPS, it finds the dehydration and fixes it. Remarkable! Keeley Aydin and I had a great hour together on Sunday, and I’ve placed my order for this product already.

If it hadn’t have been quite so hot Colin would have brought my mum and Joe over at the weekend, but we waited until it was cooler to visit them instead. We took them out to lunch in their local pub, and I had one of the best treacle tarts ever! My mum used to make her own with golden syrup and it was delicious, but this had orange and molasses in it, and was really rich. I think I still prefer my mum’s, but if you’ve got a recipe, please do share it below.

Talking of sharing, I wanted to let you know about a great offer from Bareminerals that has their foundation (all shades!), a mascara, Face Radiance and a soft focus face brush – oh, and it’s in a bag too! Perfect for travelling, and with Easy Pay instalments it’s just £14.49.

Well, that’s it from me for now, but as always, a huge thank you for all your lovely comments last time.  I’m so pleased to keep in touch with you.   I know we’ve not heard from Una and Mellie for a while, so I do hope all is well there?  And Kath, you wrote to me a month ago about your breast check up; it’d be lovely to hear from you.

With my love,

Ali xxx

    Hi Ali,
What a jam packed blog, more so than normal! Your photos of the extended family are amazing. As always though my fav is Sam and diesel! They’re just gorgeous. That one isn’t the pool is special. I can’t believe you have a pool actually! The real housewives of qvc! I can understand feeling emotional leaving them all after your weekend. You’re so lucky to have such a big and fabulous family. If you could bottle it and sell it that would be wonderful! The weather in London has just seemed amazing al summer. Maybe I’ll have to move!
Your mum and joe look so well in the photos too. So glad joe seems to be on the mend after his ordeal. Oh and can’t forget jo’s Comment about old hanging baskets!! Wonderful!!!
    Take care

Hi Susan, glad you liked the photos, and especially the one of Sam and Diesel. It makes me smile each time I look at it too! You’re right about me being lucky having such a big family, and that wasn’t even all of them! I’ve got five stepchildren too and all their partners and one baby! It’s a rarerity to get as many of them together like that, but it was a fabulous day. My sister said the summer’s will continue to get warmer over the next four years, so maybe we’ll have to put off moving! Thanks for your kind words about mum and Joe – I know she reads the blog so will see them 🙂 I knew Jo’s comments would make you laugh – she’s a very funny girl 🙂 Take care, and thanks for keeping in touch, love Ali xx

Hi Ali, as usual a lovely blog! It’s great to be able to spend time together as a family. Our grass looked the same as your (including the weeds) until we got rain last Thursday afternoon and most of the day Friday and what a difference it made to our lawn, it’s now green again! Love Merchex

    • Alison Keenan August 26, 2018 at 2:43 pm -  Reply

Oooh Merche, I am jealous! Even with all the recent rain, our lawn is still mainly straw! Fingers crossed this latest downpour will make the difference. So glad you enjoyed the blog, and thanks for writing to me. Do keep in touch, love Ali xx

    Hello Ali
What a lovely time you had with your family. Everybody looked really happy and relaxed. I bet that pool has been well used too.
My apologies for not taking part in your last blog. I did read it but because of the drugs I was taking for pain relief I was not able to reply in a way that made any sense! I was so out of things that I had my family looking for a fur hat I never owned. We have all had a good laugh since!!! Not a nice state to be in. It’s two weeks since my operation and I am still in a lot of pain. Physio this week may help. I’m not used to be idle but for the time being I’ll just have to go with it. I love your new hair style by the way. Take care and sending love and hugs as always. Judith xx

    • Alison Keenan August 26, 2018 at 2:46 pm -  Reply

Oh Judith, I am so sorry to know you’ve been feeling so poorly. Do let your GP or the hospital where you had the op know that you’re still struggling with pain. I am sure they will be able to give you something to lessen it. Physio can be painful, but does help enormously in speeding up the recovery time. I really appreciate you taking the time out to write to me, inspite of feeling so rough, and I’m sending you a gentle hug. With love, Ali xx

Good evening Ali, What a lot of magic moments, cue Perry Como, & lovely memories. I know most of us try to have get togethers throughout the year & not just at Christmas or the really big occasions but so often the British weather turns up as the uninvited guest & changes our plans. This has been a summer to have fun & I’ve loved it. You’ve shown photos of Honey with her Uncle Jack before, they always look so mischievous & he’s got a roguish twinkle – gorgeous. You asked in your last reply whether Colin has a good camera for his travels, he has a fab one on his phone & he also bought a GoPro before the last trip; like you he takes a fantastic photo & it’s so much better now that they can be stored online because we have a window seat full of boxes filled with ‘old style’ photos & to be honest once you’ve seen one mountain, you’ve seen them all. I’ve finished wearing in my new holiday footwear, we go away at the start of September & it’ll be the first time we’ve had a holiday during term time since 1989 because there was always one, two or three of us in school. I took Sox for his boosters this morning & he’s really suffering so I’ll sign off & check on him. Love from Jo x

Dear Jo, You are so a women after my own heart. This has been a summer to have fun, and we’ve spent as much time as possible out and about in it! Glad that you have too! I loved the photo of Honey and Jack too – she absolutely adores him! How funny that your Colin has a goPro, and great that he can now store everything online – saves you evenings of going through the prints 🙂 I bought my Goddaughter Sophie a gopro for her recent travels to Bali and as it works underwater she took some amazing shots. You’ll probably be all packed and ready for your holiday now – how nice to be able go in ‘term time’! Less money too hopefully. I hope you have a fabulous time away. Hope also that Sox is feeling much better. Must fly as two more hours on air to go! Love Ali xx

Hi Chris, you’re right about the pool. So many times this summer we’ve thanked our lucky stars for it and have all agreed that if we could guarantee weather like that, we’d probably never leave home! Great for you to be moving closer to your family, and I wish you luck with selling your home. I hope the breast screening goes well, and you’re right it is incredibly important. Thanks for the compliments about my hair – so much easier to style! You take care too, love Ali xx

Hi Christina, we’re truly blessed to have the pool, particularly this year, as in truth we’ve barely used it up until now, and last year it was just a concrete shell waiting for the new liner. My mum loved your comment about their photos – I’ve printed off a copy of both for her. I’m back with you this evening – fashion with Antthony and then a Lulu Guiness TSV – such a cute bag! Chris I’m glad you enjoyed the photos – lovely memories of a lovely day, and yes very lucky indeed. Everything in our garden is starting to look a little flat now, as you say, we needed the rain, and at least the lawn has started to green up. I’m glad the weather was kind to Fiona and Jessica – where exactly are the Farne Islands? I’ve never been to Whitley Bay either, but it’s on my list of places to visit when/if ever I get more time! I’m so sorry you’ve been struggling to post this comment. We had a major problem with the Blog system, but it’s all fixed now. Thanks for your perseverance! All good this end, and spent another day with Lucy and Honey where we made our own jam tarts and watched Hello Dolly 🙂 Love to you, Ali xx

Good morning Alison, I am exhausted reading your very packed social schedule and it’s only 7.45am. The pictures are fabulous and having a pool..just perfect. We have a pool, albeit a plastic muddy one which we fill up for Olly and my dudters dog Erik to play in..they live it and perfect for keeping them cool.
I saw your lawn picture and thought it was my own…my weeds ate extremely resilient and I too have night some lawn magic to try and untie the grass with the bare patches of mud. I did actually cut the grass today; we’ve had a little rain but the shady part of the garden had long green grass, the sunny part looks like straw but at least now it’s cut the grass is all the same length.
We have a family BBQ tomorrow with my sister’s, my two nephews, a nephews lovely girlfriend and of course my two. John working so food will be saved. If I don’t arrange get together no one else does and it will be Xmas soon so I have told everyone saying No is not an option.
My daughter gets her A level results today. She has already told me she will be in tears for most of the day either because her results are bad, her friends didn’t get their results for uni or her friends did get their results and will be going to uni.!! They are all off out tonight to celebrate. I have told her that these results don’t make her successful, its what she does that will do that. She has been a felted on to a counter make up course at our local college and is looking for a part time job..loads of applications so far but nothing. She has also written to make up houses and to tv studio’s, including QVC to ask the makeup departments for advice/opportunities but if I am honest, had very little response.
I can’t believe my school hols ate nearly over although I did waste two weeks watching the European Championships..I was obsessed.!i marvel at the dedication and ability of our wonderful sports men and women. At least now it’s finished I can start my list of jobs. First was the text return..which is now done and submitted!! No treacle tart recipe from me I am afraid..I can’t stand it!!
Have a great day..love Mary xx

Well Mary, How was the family BBQ? I’m sure it went well – I just hope you managed to put some food by for John! I’m guessing by now Chloe will have got her results, and I very much hope they were what she was wishing for. If not, as you say, it’s what she’ll do that will make her successful, and I hope that the somewhat flat response she’s so far received to her enquiries will pick up. My sister is exactly the same as you when it comes to watching sport. First Wimbledon then the European Championships. Im more of a drama fan myself! The summer hols have just flown by and Jenny like you will be back at school next week. Lucy too, and Honey starts nursery! Thanks for keeping in touch, love Ali xx

Was Ali. Lovely blog as always. Beautiful family. Honey is adorable, such a young lady.
We’ve had quite a busy time lately. Had a lovely holiday with Graemes sister and her in laws. Then, Graeme very kindly organised a break for our friends with the little one who is poorly. Sadly he’s no longer able to fly so 3 holiday cottages were home for the week and grandparents aunts and uncles and cousins were all able to have a lovely time and make some very special memories. One of the cottages was only used for 4 days by one of the families due to work commitments so we were invited to join them for a few days. Luckily the weather was still nice and we had a great time.
I’ve been told to tell you about how MELI got her name and emphasize the spe!!ing!!!!! My daughter didn’t want to know it they were going to have a boy or girl and they were convinced it was a boy. When a girl arrived she was nameless for over a week as they had only chosen boys names. They ended up with a shortlist after the 3rd day, and decided they would see which one suited her personality best. They had Megan, Eleanor, Lena and Imogen. They couldn’t decide then one of their friends said she had a little piece of all the names so they used the first letter of each and Meli it is. Technically she could be Mile or Lime!!!!
She’s doing brilliantly just now. Her speech is almost 99.99% there and she is only about 6 months behind her peers with school work. She’s still quite dependant on the wAlking aid,but all things considered she is an absolute star. Getting a little attitude sometimes but very funny with it.
We have been busy with 2 properties that Graeme has been renovating. The plan was for us to move into one of them. Meli was so upset that we were going to have to move again and I just couldn’t do it. I totally get it, after all the chaos we had it just felt wrong.. If you remember, I was renting the house from a very dear friend, and he made all the changes it needed for Meli to be a bit more independent when we came back from the hospital. We asked if he would be interested in selling it to us and he was absolutely delighted. We have just had the go ahead for us to be able to make even more changes and we are going to almost double the size of it. We are going on holiday in the October break and will be starting the work when we get home. Meli is thrilled that we are staying where we are, and frankly, I am too. Graeme is very excited about it and the 2 of them are thick as thieves planning a den!!!
We are done with court. They eventually apologised, which is all I really wanted. They accepted responsibility and we settled out of court. It was never about the money. In fact, we discussed everything with Meli, and we have donated half of it to the ward where they cared for Meli and some of it to another charity that is very close to my heart. I know it was for Meli, but it felt wrong to take it, and she will never need it. She will be provided for, and then some. She’s never going to want for anything , we have seen to that.
I’m going to leave it there for now. School uniform ironing awaits!
Our love as always Ali, to you, and our wee army.
    Una, Meli and Graeme xx

A lovely blog as usual. The photo’s in/by the pool look like they were taken abroad! Hasn’t Jack altered? He looks different with his hair longer. Sam looks really well too. Love his dog. Our dog is 12 now and is suffering really badly with arthritis and on loads of medication. We are at the Vets nearly every week as she’s so ill. Good old pet insurance! Tell Sam to get it asap if he hasn’t already- I am speaking from experience.
Nothing much has changed here. The GP is still keeping an eye on me as am still struggling with certain things-as you know!!! Don’t think things will alter unfortunately in the near future.
I think the summer has gone here in Wales as it’s so cold!
Will contact you soon-hopefully with better news!
Take Care as always and love to Honey.

Oh Elaine, thank you for that. I do try to keep up with the army, but Meli does keep me on my toes lol! I wouldn’t have it any other way. Well, I would much prefer her mummy to still be here, but I try to be the best mummy/granny I can be.
I hope you are well Elaine.
    Love from all of
I’m sure Ali doesn’t mind us hijacking her post lol.
