Half way through the week already, and in spite of all the rain we’ve had the only thing growing on my lawn are the weeds! I’ve decided to treat myself to some of Richard Jackson’s Lawn Magic in the autumn, which I’ve no doubt will double my chances of a moss and weed free back garden!
To be fair, considering we had no rain for almost two months, I’m surprised even the weeds survived. Of course the perfect answer would be a Peony faux flower arrangement – no watering required at all! We’ve got a Big Deal running all this week that features the sweetest peony roses in a silver vase.
I’ve tried to keep my watering down to a minimum but I have been refreshing my pots and hanging baskets. This is the first year I’ve started the baskets from just plug plants and I’m delighted with the results. My friend Jo had me in hysterics when we recently drove past a garden centre that had a huge sign asking “Do you have old hanging baskets?” “That’s a bit personal isn’t it?!” she retorted! Love her 🙂
Because we’ve been able to rely on the weather Colin and I decided to cram as much socialising as possible into the one weekend. It took a fair bit of planning and making up of beds, but Jo, her sister Debs and their partners all joined us for a BBQ on that blisteringly hot Friday night. We had such a laugh, and even managed to catch this cracking sun set in between gin cocktails! Just stunning.
We’d barely waved them off on the Saturday morning before my niece Clare arrived with her husband Cale. They’re settling into the UK really well, and have found jobs, and a flat to rent in Parsons Green. We really enjoyed catching up on all their news, and stayed up well into the night listening to music and watching the stars.
A while back I’d suggested to my three children that we all go to the seaside for a couple of days and stay in an Airbnb, but now that Sam has Diesel, and Honey is still small, we decided it would be just as much fun to stay home. We inherited a swimming pool when we moved here five years ago, and my intention had been to deck over it. I didn’t think for one moment it would ever be warm enough for us to actually use it, and up until last year I was right. However, looking ahead to when we might possibly move, it made sense to get a new pool liner and for Colin to refurb the stones around the edge.
This summer has been amazing, and although we don’t have heating in the pool, the water has been just the right temperature. We felt so lucky to have it on Sunday when in addition to Clare and Cale, my niece Emily, her husband Paul and their two boys arrived, my sister Jenny and Linda, and then Lucy and Honey, Jack, Sam and Diesel!
Cale, bless him, cooked the BBQ and we just had the best time playing games, chatting, keeping cool and enjoying the music that Colin chose for us. I took a few photographs for you, and have printed some for myself as a special memory. Lucy, Honey Sam and Jack all stayed with us until Tuesday, and I took them out to lunch before heading in for my shift at QVC. I felt quite tearful when I said goodbye to them… it made me realise how blessed I am to have them in my life, and just how special these times together are.
In spite of my best efforts, all this time in the sunshine has meant that my skin’s been looking a little dehydrated, so I was delighted to hear about Elemis’s brand new Pro-Collagen Overnight Matrix, complete with Drone Technology! That basically means a bit like a GPS, it finds the dehydration and fixes it. Remarkable! Keeley Aydin and I had a great hour together on Sunday, and I’ve placed my order for this product already.
If it hadn’t have been quite so hot Colin would have brought my mum and Joe over at the weekend, but we waited until it was cooler to visit them instead. We took them out to lunch in their local pub, and I had one of the best treacle tarts ever! My mum used to make her own with golden syrup and it was delicious, but this had orange and molasses in it, and was really rich. I think I still prefer my mum’s, but if you’ve got a recipe, please do share it below.
Talking of sharing, I wanted to let you know about a great offer from Bareminerals that has their foundation (all shades!), a mascara, Face Radiance and a soft focus face brush – oh, and it’s in a bag too! Perfect for travelling, and with Easy Pay instalments it’s just £14.49.
Well, that’s it from me for now, but as always, a huge thank you for all your lovely comments last time. I’m so pleased to keep in touch with you. I know we’ve not heard from Una and Mellie for a while, so I do hope all is well there? And Kath, you wrote to me a month ago about your breast check up; it’d be lovely to hear from you.
With my love,
