Varicose vein led confidence tricks

Alison YoungWith summer approaching, a question prompted by Kathy’s fashion show audience has reminded me of one of the big concerns that you may have during the summer months if you are not very confident about your legs because of varicose veins, broken capillaries, bruising, discolouration etc.

In hot weather it is almost impossible to wear tights and as much as the maxi dress and palazzo trousers are a must-own, sometimes you just want to wear a pretty dress or an outfit for a wedding like everyone else.

Judith Williams Self Tan Beautiful Legs - 201946Firstly, self-tan covers a multitude of sins but often on a leg that does have vascular damage this can be a good base if you have time to do it. If so, you will almost definitely need the dark option of whatever brand you choose and probably two applications to get the desired level of colour.

To increase the coverage also use some of the following options; body make-ups: some of which will work instantly on their own. Judith Williams has a body make-up spray (not the self-tan) which, if you spray repeated very fine applications on your legs and wait for them to dry in between, they give the illusion of a 20 to 30 denier stocking and make your legs look like a mannequin’s.

Laura Geller Baked Body FrostingLaura Geller does a brilliant body make-up in her baked collection called ‘Baked Body Frostings’ which, when used wet with the sponge, you can literally paint on a perfect skin finish over the top of any imperfections.

The ‘Tahitian Bronze’ gives the best tan colour while there are other shades which have more shimmer such as Honey Glow, which can be used as highlighters but don’t give as much cover.

Doll10 Cosmetics have an instant body make-up called ‘Golden Pearl Bronzing Powder’ – look out for this on QVC later this year. This comes with an application mix and can be painted dry all over the body. All of these are surprisingly non-transferable – so once applied and allowed to set for five minutes, they do not come off until you use soap and water, or for example, a shower gel. Obviously they may mark bed linen if you go to bed in them but certainly they will give you the confidence on your legs to go out for the evening, go to a wedding or to the races etc.

How do I know all this? As a teenager, a horse fell on my legs and I was trapped underneath it on concrete. This has resulted in a lot of damage to my lower legs with varicose veins etc. so believe you me, I have tested all of these products and use them on holiday, in hot weather, on special occasions etc. and they certainly work!

    Hi Ali
I can’t find the Laura Geller products you recommend for varicose veins, do you think Decleor Gradual Glow would be ok? Hope you can help.

Hi Alison, I love Mally eye makeup but wondered if you could recommend a good remover. I don’t like to rub my eyes and can’t find an eye makeup remover that works on waterproof and Mally makeup. Please can you suggest one. Love QVC but your shows especially! Regards Jean x

    Hi Alison
I have broken capillaries on my nose and cheeks. How can I best cover them without wearing heavy make up? Hope you can help.

    Hi Alison
The last 6 months my skin has become spotty at times even though i look after my skin. I use my clarasonic cleanser mostly or cleanse and polish to clean my face am and pm. followed by Dr perricone’s products which i have been using for approx 2 months. Before that i was using Gatineau which was fine for the first 6 months and inbetween tried some Decleaor products. I dont know what to do, please can you advise.
Ive learnt so much from you and the team that my work colleague’s even ask for my advise when treating their skin as they know im a QVC beauty addict.
    Look forward to your reply

    Dear Alison,
I am trying to find an eye cream to suit me! I am now 47 and have not had many lines around my eyes until recently. I follow a good routine with Elemis and Liz Earle. I now have fine lines under my eyes, however, I am starting to notice my lids are dropping slightly and I have developed puffiness and slight dark circles, yikes, from nothing to everything!!! I have recently tried the Gatineau roller ball to reduce the puffiness however, I now have dry patches and soreness on my left eye so have stopped using and am now not able to wear make up on this eye – can you advise please? I have sensitive eyes and skin.
    Looking forward to your reply.
