Butler and Wilson anniversary

Twenty Years On

Where have the last twenty years gone? It seems impossible that over the next couple of days we will be celebrating not one but two 20th Anniversaries with QVC, Butler & Wilson and Tova, and they are both featuring on ‘Spotlight on Jewellery’ this evening at 6pm, along with Lisa Snowdon – glamour all the way!!

There have been many fabulous memories down the years but one of the absolute highlights of working with Simon Wilson has to be the trip to the Bahamas, broadcasting live from the Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island. Thanks to Simon and my colleague Nat Gray we have the proof!

We did that show the day after I had stubbed my big toe in the swimming pool – I was in agony perched on those stools for two hours! What a fabulous location they found for us though with the view through the trees to the pool and beach beyond. I’m trying to remember if Simon did the ‘Leap of Faith’? I’ll have to ask him tonight. I was banned from doing anything remotely dangerous after the toe incident!

The 20th Anniversary shows are going to be a little different from usual so I hope you will be able to watch not only tonight at 6pm, but also Sunday and Monday at 2pm and 7pm. There are going to be a few trips down memory lane so watch out for the clothes and the hairstyles.

Talking of hairstyles, I thought you may also enjoy this video of some of Tova’s highlights from her twenty years with QVC UK.

Originally Tova brought us her cactine skin care range, which pre-dated both the fragrances and the Diamonique shows. Tova was really kind to my mum, giving her several pots of the balm from her range to help the healing process after my mum had her breast cancer operation and was undergoing radiotherapy. Mum and I have never forgotten her kindness. I’m really looking forward to seeing Tova for our show at 3pm today particularly as I was unable to go to her ‘do’ at The Ritz last night as I was on-air. It looked like a good time was had by all – hope she saved me some champagne and cake!

You’ll be pleased to hear that the chocolate cake I made for my mum’s birthday was very well received. I iced it Friday night after work, before crawling into bed, and it travelled safely in the car up to Nottingham. I posted this picture of my mum holding it, on Facebook, and she had an amazing one hundred plus well-wishing comments. She isn’t on Facebook, but I am going to print them all up for her to see, along with the picture which I think is gorgeous. She looks so well after a rough few years health-wise and nowhere near her 89 years… in my opinion.

She likes to have a little nap in the afternoon which gave me the opportunity to drop a few books into an independent book shop called ‘The Bookcase’, in nearby Lowdham. It’s not an area of Nottingham that I am particularly familiar with, but as we were driving along I recognised the place where mum and dad had bought a caravan from when I was about eleven! It’s amazing the things we remember!

I had also donated a book to West Bridgford library before we went to my mum’s for lunch. It has changed a lot since I was presented with my second prize in a story-writing competition when I was ten. I’m hoping to organise an event there soon so watch this space for more information.

Sunday saw Daniel and I head off to Selhurst Park for Crystal Palace’s first home game of the season. It was being televised but there is nothing like being at the ground. The pitch is looking pretty good and the new signings look promising. It was a good day out despite the loss to Arsenal. We were supposed to be having a barbecue when we got home but the weather wasn’t nice enough to eat outdoors – it was still enjoyable though.

Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday have seen me hard at work writing the sequel to ‘Life’s a Beach and Then…’ called, ‘If He Really Loved Me’. My aim this week was for 10,000 words and I’m on 8,500 so far which I’m pretty pleased with. I’m loving the way the story is developing and can’t wait to share it with you. Do remember signed copies of my current book are now on the QVC website, item number 705211, if you’re still looking for a holiday read.

Time is pressing on so I need to finish shortly but not before I mention that today’s ‘Fashion on Friday’ at 5pm, is Biba. Very exciting, particularly if, like me, you remember it from the first time round. I’ll bet Simon Wilson does. Which reminds me, thanks to all of you who entered the Butler & Wilson competition. We had over 750 entries BUT there can only be one winner. Big congratulations to Karen Cockfield whose name was randomly selected by the social media team this morning!

Enjoy your weekend but make time for some QVC UK watching, particularly as we have two brilliant Today’s Special Value offers: Vitamix on Saturday and Decleor on Sunday.

Happy shopping

Much love

Julia x

Hello Julia, Simon and Ali. the Bahamas looked amazing and so did/do you both. The Butler and Wilson hours on QVC are always wonderful and I have several pieces of jewellery. Your mum is amazing too – and you can tell just by the way that you talk about her, that you love her very much. Congratulations to both Simon and Tova. I always have Tova’s perfumes on my dressing table and everyone comments on how lovely their fragrance is. I treated myself to Tova’s blue wave ring when it was on the last time and it is stunning. Just as Tova is.

    Hi Julia,
It is amazing where the time has gone as you say. I remember my father saying that “time passes in a twinkling of an eye”. How right he was. I probably mentioned it before, I met up with an old friend that I started my nurse training with a couple of weeks back. We met up after over 40 years! It was lovely to meet after all that time. We chatted away as if we had seen each other a short while before not 40 years. Some people are like that. You seem to have an affinity with them.
I’m glad your mum liked her cake. I could eat some of that now as I’m feeling a bit peckish. I always get a case of the munchies round about this time of night when you shouldn’t be eating, before going to bed.
I watched the fashion at 5pm with Biba but as the sizing only went up to a size 18 and a lot of the fabric was not stretchy didn’t order anything. So at least my bank balance hasn’t suffered . I might take another look at Tova’s pieces though as there were some stunning things I fancied.
Well, must make a move. All the best from a rather damp Wales!!
    Tina S.

      Hi Tina
I think the time definitely passes more quickly the older we get!
I do remember you telling me avbout your friend you had reconnected with through Facebook. I have a couple of friends like that. I don’t see them for months, sometimes years, and we pick up as though we were chatting yesterday!
The cake was yum and we brought some back for Daniel and Sophie.
Some of the Biba pieces had stretch – I’ve ordered a couple myself!
      Hope Wales has dried out

      Hi Julia,
Just wanted to add how much I enjoyed Butler and Wilson shows and actually managed at long last to get the Welsh Flag Brooch! I have been waiting ages for it to come back into stock. I couldn’t believe it though when you said the English flag sold out first though!! LOL. I also managed to order the Bee brooch before that sold out to. So I’m waiting eagerly to receive my 2 brooches. Great to see Simon. I thought it was so nice when he gave you the flowers that were presented to him today. It brought a tear to my eyes.
      Best wishes Tina S. x

Watched Vitamix today and you’ve lost a lot of weight – how have you done it – you been dieting? If so, which one, noticed also when you did the Biba show on Friday – love Fashion on Fridays Julia especially when you are presenting – not the same when you are off. Just wanted to say you are looking good

Love your blog Julia…I had to comment that for some time now I have thought, Simon Wilson is looking more and more (facially) like Fred Astaire, especially with his slicked back hair – you can pass this on to him next time you work with him!

      Hi Joy
I’m so pleased you like my blog!
You are right about Simon looking like Fred Astaire – I will mention it tonight if I remember.

Hi Julia – watched the Biba fashion show on Friday -it was fab – I too, remembered it from when I was in my late teens, early 20’s. Just wanted to say you’ve lost a ton of weight and wanted to know how you’ve done it – have you been dieting -if so, which diet – have you done the Body Rescue plan like a lot of others?

You look good oh and your mum is lovely – wish her all the best from me. Janet

      Hi Janet
I really enjoyed the Biba show too – have ordered a couple of pieces. I’m pleased you enjoy watching Fashion on Friday when I’m on.
Thanks for your comments about me having lost weight. I don’t think I have. Maybe it was just a flattering outfit. I haven’t been dieting and actually exercising less then usual because of writing my second novel.
Thanks for the compliment though and for my mum

Hello Julia, Your opening question “Where have the last twenty years gone?” gave me a wander down Memory Lane which is something I don’t do very often as I like to live in the moment. I have been a Q customer since day dot and, as I’ve told you before, you sold me my first two items – both still going strong. My mum also used Tova’s skin care after she had cancer treatment and found it very calming, she loved Simon and had many B&W pieces that are now shared between me and my girls. My absolute favourite is my racoon brooch known as Bandit, he graces many jackets and coats and every time I wear him someone asks about him. Your mum is beautiful and looks ageless; you have told us about how she looks after her skin and she obviously has fabulous genes and has passed on her good looks to you and Sophie. Finally, I loved “Life’s a beach” and gave it a 5* review. I kept it until we were in Sicily and one day Colin went on an Inspector Montalbano trip so I was on my own. My time alone consisted of a blue sun lounger, twelve hours of sunshine (I was factored), Prosecco and Holly’s story. I couldn’t wait to find out what happened yet didn’t want to finish it and I thought Rosemary was delightful. I Laughed, cried and even said “Blimey Julia” ..! Take care and don’t bite off more than you can chew too often. love from Jo x

      Hello Jo
Thanks for your chatty comment – it’s so brilliant that you have been a QVC customer for such a long time. Can’t believe your original two purcheases are still going strong.
Hope you enjoyed the Butler & Wilson shows – exhausting but fun, and it was so kind of Simon to gift me his bouquet of flowers.
Thanks for the five star review of Life’s a Beach and Then… on Amazon. I still find it quite overwhelming that people are reading about, and caring about, my creations. I shed a few tears when I was writing certain parts I can tell you.
I have a few days off after my shift on Friday and as well as celebrating Chris’s birthday I am hoping to get another 10,000 words written before I’m back on QVC next Thursday.
Enjoy your bank holiday weekend – let’s hope for some decent weather!

Really enjoyed the Bulter & Wilson show I watched!!! I have read your new novel on my Kindle, loaded it & read it to the end in bed. It was a cracking plot & the references to QVC amused me. I am looking forward to the next one. I read your previous book which I enjoyed & interestingly you & I have a good deal in common!! Hugs Sue xx

      Hi Sue,
Pleased you enjoyed the Butler & Wilson show you saw. I loved watching all the old clips – I will put a montage of them on my next blog.
Thanks for buying my book and for lovely comments about it. I’ll try keep the QVC references to a minimum in book two, which I am about 45,000 words into – hoping to have it out at the end of November.
I wonder what things we have in common? – maybe you could elaborate?
      speak soon
