Trick or Treat

My children are now adults, 25 and 24 years old, so they obviously don't go 'trick or treating' but thinking back twelve or fifteen years, I don't think they ever did.

Maybe it wasn't so popular then, or maybe it was because we lived in a rather spread out village with no street lighting… whatever, they never did it, and we never had anyone knocking on our door either.

So on Wednesday evening I was up to my wrists making pastry for a quiche for dinner before heading off to see 'Skyfall' at the cinema, which was brilliant by the way, when there was a knock at the door.

Chris answered it and it was 'trick or treaters'! We had no sweets in the house bought specifically, so he had to improvise. He gave them a handful of my Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, brought over from America for me by Laura Geller, and sent them on their way.

A few minutes later another knock, more of my own personal 'treats' dispatched, and then another knock and yet more of my sweets gone! There are half a dozen remaining for my personal consumption… oh well, better for the waistline I guess!

Talking of treats we have a great line up for you on Sunday with our 'Gift of Beauty Day'.

Hope you will be able to join me at 1pm and 3pm.

Have a great weekend.

Julia xx

    Hi Julia,
You mentioned ‘trick or treating’, I dont think that means the same any more like it use too, it is like a lot of things the meaning is not there any more, it is just done because people feel that it has to be done.
Wow I expect a few more wished they had knocked at your door with the ‘treats’ Chris gave them. I expect it was the same one’s coming back for more.
It was nice to see Kim back on QVC, I love her clothes. Looking forward to watching on Sunday with the Beauty.
Have a great weekend although you are working.
    Love Jean X

Hi Julia, My son is 24 and he didn’t go trick or treating either. Not wishing to be a party pooper/killjoy but to me it sends out wrong messages – children knocking on doors asking for sweeties etc. Rant over from Mrs Angry.
Re those Peanut Butter Cups I’m not sure if you have a chain of stores called Home Bargains darn sarf but I’m sure they sell them in there?
Loved the Beauty Day yesterday – I indulged in some L’Occitane can’t wait for it to arrive.
    Love Denise

Hi Julia! Sorry it has taken a bit of time to get back to you! we are in the big middle of our move to Naples, Florida and it is really hectic! With the AWFUL SANDY STORM on the East Coast making a mess of NJ, Ny it has had a widespread effect on all of the Us who live nearby. Vermont in the North Eastern part was not bothered by much but a bit of wind. Nothing major, no power outages or trees down!! We were very lucky and pray all those that have had SOO much loss will finally get all the help they need. The elections are tomorrow and we shall see what happens. I am not a Democrat or much of an Obama fan but really I am not sure it will make too much difference who wins with SOO many issues in this world that are wrong!! We all just gotta keep on going!! In the middle of all this stuff about us Jeff and I were able to find a quiet time to go and get married! it was a lovely moment and we are very happy. We were childhood sweethearts and grew up together! Wanted to share that with you!
Now, thanks a lot for all your help on the Decleor Solaire products. Yes , I have been a very good about using them for at least ten years after you and ALISON told us all how to be safe in the SUN!! I will use these products year round now that we will be living in the Sunshine State! I also want to tell you that the EMMA HARDIE Balm save my life using it at night on my face alone! IT REALLY CLEARED UP the enlarged pores or whatever the chin area seems to do with hair!!! ALL GONE!!! EASY to deal with now!! It is amazing. MY biggest worry now is to find a website to restock my products without QVC UK!! I will go looking and hope it will work!! Nothing like that here on QVC!! Their beauty is not the same without an ALI YOUNG ON BOARD!!
We will move next week and I will be hoping that you find a place soon! I tell you what BUYING is very $$$$$ with all the fees!! THEY R AWFUL!!! Never mind it is our dream house on the beach!! Wish I could share some pics with you!!!!!!! take care and I will get back after it is all over ( the move ). XXX GINNY

Hi Julia, We seem to get the younger children ( with thier parents) doing trick or treat around here, I don’t mind and I always have a bag of sweets handy, what I do hate are all the fireworks ,and there have been quite a few this year!!! ( who has the spare money to go up in smoke???)I must be getting old and grumpy, but my poor cat has been behind the setee for three days!!My back trouble is better,I have arthritis in the base of my spine, I see a great physiotherapist and that has helped me a lot, but I MUST do the exersises,or I have problems. The trouble is with chronic back pain and spasms, you end up not wanting to move at all, long after it has got better, it plays with your mind as well. best wishes Yviex

    Hi Julia
Sorry I’ve not been on sooner, Chris has had the ‘Man Flu’ and I’ve been dosing him up on fresh hot lemon and honey. Feeling quite smug that it hadn’t got to me after my flu jab, but spoke too soon…it’s all in my face and back of throat, the worst being all my teeth are aching like mad at the moment.
We bought some goodies for the ‘trick or treaters’, but not one call this year, so Chris filled his boots!
I have made a couple of almond tarts lately with raspberry jam at the bottom, they were scrummy…once this flu has gone I will make a start on my Christmas cake before the hand op at the end of the month. Still not looking forward to it!!!
I have watched most of your shows lately and always love the Butler and Wilson shows with Simon.
I’ve seen another one of your friends, I think, on TV over the past weeks and she doesn’t look any different, but I can’t for the life of me remember what she was in years ago…she was in Corrie last night with the gorgeous Nigel Havers…Debbie Arnold??! She has not changed a bit and that hair of hers is still the same, how does she do it!!
Please forgive any mistakes, but my teeth and face are really hurting at the moment…I said to Chris “I’ve got face ache and for once it’s not you!” I was only joking!! He told his friend from work what I’d said and she nearly fell off the chair laughing!

    Hi Jean
I never thought of that – maybe it was the same ones coming back for more! They have all gone now ( the remaining 6 that is ) and I never got to try one of the Cadbury’s ‘screme’ mini eggs I bought as the family devoured them – apparently the yoke is green!
Hope you enjoyed the the Gift of Beauty day on Sunday? – there were some really lovely collections to give as gifts I thought.
    speak soon

    Hi Denise,
It’s funny but my daughter said the same thing about ‘trick or treating’ ……. in one breath we tell our children not to speak to strangers, and then we encourage them to knock on strangers doors and ask for sweets ……. we live in a crazy mixed up world!
I think I probably would be able to get Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups if I looked BUT better to regard them as a treat from America and then I won’t eat too many.
Hopefully your L’Occitane has arrived by now and you’ve been enjoying it?

    Hi Ginny
Firstly big congratulations to you and Jeff, I hope you will be very happy. Who knows maybe one day Chris and I will follow suit!
The elections in your country are over and Obama is elected – I know nothing about American politics but I do sometimes feel that a four year term of office is not enough time to instigate meaningful change – same here really!
You must be in the middle of the big move – just a tad on the envious side that you are going to be living on the beach in Naples!!!! Keep using your suncare – have you tried Ultrasun btw?
I LOVE Emma Hardie Balm – wouldn’t be without it, brilliant for cleansing make-up and as a mask …. I like to leave it on for a good 30 minutes when I get the time ….. love the smell too.
Must dash as I need to shower and get into work for Fashion on Friday
Good Luck with everything and speak soon

    Hi Julia
You look lovely in the Christmas trailer. Can you please tell me where you got the wrap/scarf/shrug/whatever-it-is? It’s the one in various warm shades, including orange.

    Hi Yvie
I’m glad to hearyour back is a bit better. I know exactly what you mean because Chris is the same. If he ‘does his back in’ he can barely move for two or three days and because of the pain he holds himself in an awkward position so that long after the original pain has subsided he is still aching from using his other muscles in a strained way …. viscious circle.
I LOVE fireworks BUT I think they are losing their specialness ( if that’s a word ) due to overuse and is it necessary to have the bangs quite so loud, that’s what scares the animals. We just had sparklers this year but it was fun.
    speak soon

    Hi Annette
I haven’t heard that expresion ( face ache ) in years!!! I hope your face is aching less now and that you are over the flu?
The almond tarts sounded lovely … my Dad’s favourite was bakewell tart, and funnily enough my son likes it although I think luscious lemon cake is probably his favourite.
I haven’t started thinking about Christmas Cake yet but then I never do until after Dan’s birthday on the 27th.
You’ll have to get Chris to write on my blog when youe hand is recovering

    Hi Natasha
The top is from Very Volbracht and is 104773 – it comes in black too. I know the red sold out in the show in early October but we may have it back in stock so it’s worth checking.
    Thanks for the compliment
