What a lovely weekend of outings it was. Got to meet up with mum, then the kids, and also my siblings. Went to the theatre on Saturday afternoon too – so it was full on! Then back down to Devon after my shift Sunday night to greet another load of visitors staying a week, so it wasn’t any wonder I came down with something during my shift outside! (See below) Still it was a fab time.
Friday I got to see mum – we went to cinema to see I, Tonya – see cinema review below.
She actually bought ME a mother’s day orchid too – very nice. It’s now pride of place in my Surrey bedroom. I love orchids – and Phalaenopsis – have been having great successes with mine, partly due to Richard Jackson’s plant food Flower Power. Mum’s a keen gardener as well and has tons of pot plants in her courtyard garden. We had a quick bite to eat too, and it was lovely catching up with her. Also saw mum on Sunday at brother Glenn’s, with the other three siblings too. Amazing to think there are now five children, sixteen grandchildren and currently six great grandchildren amongst her descendants. Dad would have been very proud, rest him. Have you got that many, or are part of a family with that many – or more…?!
Then I got to see the one that’s my own granddaughter, when Lolly and Nick met Brad and family in Putney for a very nice Sunday lunch. It was super to get together with them all on the actual day – it meant a lot. Particularly as our schedules are so taxing at the moment! Hopefully I’ll see little Blake every couple of weeks at least. Lolly is just at the end of her sickness now, being about 13 weeks. Exciting times!

London Traffic – aaaaargh! OMGEEEE what an awful journey I had last week when I was driving all over the place to meet people on Sunday. Look at this mileage on my car’s display – 2 hours 18 minutes, and average speed was 14mph. FOURTEEN!! I could have cycled faster! South Croydon is a particularly nasty area to drive through though – past Ikea in Purley etc. I must investigate other cut-throughs! Thank goodness for a great audiobook though!
Book of the Week
Anatomy of a Scandal by Sarah Vaughan. About a woman who has to protect her family from the lies that might ruin them, and the barrister determined to make her pay. Gripping psychological drama – just the type I like, especially after I’ve been reading light hearted chic lit. And it says for fans of Apple Tree Yard and The Good Wife. I’d have been a barrister in another life so this appealed to me hugely. Really highly reviewed as well so that always gets my attention on audible. It’s this week’s Book of the Week over on my website book blog. I like that this one has several narrators too. Give it a go!
Recipe of the week
Favourite pud of the week, done by moi (Wendy and Linda are away so it was all down to me to look after our author guests this week!) was this chocolate mousse with banana. Totally non-dairy ingredients as one of the girls was vegan, I was very proud of myself having concocted a version of Wendy’s usually choc mousse. If you’d like the recipe get in touch or say in a comment below! Went down a treat too – and as no dairy, didn’t leave me feeling bloated afterwards. Yay!
Intelligence and Common Sense
This week the world sadly lost Professor Stephen Hawking, one of the cleverest men alive. The film starring Eddie Redmayne as him is well worth a watch. Then I saw this. According to recent studies, 95% of IQ scores are between 70 and 130, the average university student being about 125. It claims that over 140 makes you a genius. Well, years ago I did a Mensa test and I scored 156. So does that make me a genius? If so I’m not sure what at. And like my kids say – mum, you might be intelligent but you’ve got no common sense! What about you?
Watch: Mary Stuart
At the theatre with my pal, @thetheatrefox Sara. I must admit I was looking forward to this one, but wary that it would not live up to expectations due to the hype that’s been surrounding it for so long. Tickets hard to find, the worthy critiques extolling its virtues – you know the stuff. It’s a play about Elizabeth 1 and Mary Stuart her captive, and the machinations of those around them in an era when being a traitor could lose you your head – instantly. The clothes are modern day – until the very end. It has a Shakespearian feel and if you love that kind of prose, expounded with gusto in a monotone by ‘actorrrrs’ then you’ll love it. Juliet Stevenson made it worth it all, though – she was amazing. I’m glad I went, but I’d have to say for some it’ll be a bit marmite. 7/10 from me, due to the monotone moments.
Watch 2: I, Tonya at the cinema.
As opposed to the above, I, Tonya was in some places almost monosyllabic! In a good way. The stupidity of the main characters involved in the real life knobbling of an Olympic competitor just prior to the big competition was almost too extreme to be believed. But in the little snippets you see at the end of the actual interviews on which this biopic is based, you get to see just how true to life some of the portrayals are. Breathtaking. I felt sorry for Tonya in the end, but only a bit, as she truly does come across as unlikeable. But you can see why. Great performances, and award winning too – Allison Janney as the mum (you won’t recognise her in real life – great make-up, and great parrot!) A fab 8.5/10 from me.
This Week on QVC – my goodness we have some massive brands headlining this week!
Monday – yayyyy! Wide shoes! E-fit wedge sandals from top brand Clarks!! The Stasha design has six colour options, and the last full hour is at 4pm so get in early.
Tuesday – top your mattress the Silentnight way with the dual-layer anti-allergen Airmax topper – very good price too for this kind of protector.
Babyliss is back on Wednesday with their latest hot styling brush with ceramic barrel. I swear by mine, and this new one is the PRO Titanium 50mm barrel.
Thursday sees the return of Dyson and the V8 Animal offer we’ve got will DEFINITELY impress you – so will the suction power. Many people say they do not need an upright because this top of the range is powerful enough. Don’t miss yours, final airing is 10pm on Thursday. If the stock lasts 🙂
It’s our big Mid-Season Sale all day Friday – and Susan Graver has her first Today’s Special Value in ages and it is a water-resistant printed packable raincoat, with an unbelievably low price!
