They think it’s all over – and it is now!

I can’t imagine a single person in the land being able to complain that there’s been “nothing to watch on TV” this last month!  Never mind the likes of Versailles, Poldark and the newly introduced Picnic at Hanging Rock, the World Cup and Wimbledon have kept us right royally entertained!

It’s a shame that England didn’t bring the trophy home from Russia, but they made a supreme effort.  I saw an advert for William Hill the bookies today commenting that when they said “Football’s Coming Home” they hadn’t stated which year… 10/1 odds currently on us winning in 2022!  And hats off to all those who coped with the humongous heat on Centre Court – including the audience – and the tennis champions who kept us guessing as to which of them would make the loudest and most peculiar noise whilst serving! 🙂

We had our fair share of fun at home too when Colin found a table football game at the local dump which he paid a fiver for!  My sister Linda and I had a whale of a time trying to keep the ball in play and I was thrilled when I actually scored a goal!  Honey and I had our own World Cup set up too, and she called her ball ‘Fensagenser’… I don’t know why either!  I got her a little swing seat for the garden, and she brought all her toys down to share the space with her – bless her.

And bless you too, for all your lovely comments last week, and for all your tips on keeping the mosquitoes at bay!  I’ve yet to try the Avon body spray, but the citronella candle helped – thank you!

Kath Boddy, I’ve been thinking of you and I do hope your visit to the breast clinic wasn’t too difficult for you.  Do let me know won’t you?  And Tricia, your kind words have spurred me on in my research for self-publication of my book.  I know Lucy’s got a few pointers for me too, and I’m hoping to add a few chapters to my website prior to that, but I’ll keep you up to date with all that.

I must keep you in the loop with some of the incredible TSVs that are heading your way too, and of course there’s Christmas in July next week on the 25th!  Some folk still disbelieve me when I tell them that QVC dedicate the entire day to all things festive, but judging by how busy it is, I know there are far more of you who tune in and make the best of the bargains and buy well ahead of the big day!

This year I’m bringing you the Christmas TSV next Wednesday – a set of lanterns with LED candles from Alison Cork’s interiors range.  I still have one of the first lanterns she brought to QVC and I know these will be fabulous too.  We’ve got Festive Food hours, Christmas Lighting, Home Reflections and plenty more besides, so make space in your cupboards so you can hide things away until December!

You’ve got nowhere near as long to wait for our Yankee Candle TSV though, and you’ll want to have these out on display and filling your home with fabulous fragrance. On the 24th July you will be able to buy three jar candles – two large and one medium – for under £28 and available in 3 Easy Pay instalments. The choices are incredibly diverse: from exotic Black Coconut to cocooning Soft Blanket, rich and fruity Delicious Guava or clean Turquoise Sky, and then my favourite Pink Sands. Imagine at the end of another sunny day, relaxing on a beautiful beach where the sand is still warm and the scent of sea clover is in the air… that’s what Pink Sands is to me. All you have to do is find your favourite.

Something I couldn’t show you last time on the blog was my anniversary present from Colin.  That said, I’m sure you’ve spotted me wearing it on air by now.  I am now the VERY proud owner of this stunning tanzanite and diamond ring, and yes it was from QVC.  To be fair, I did give Colin a bit of a heads up on it as there were only three remaining and they were at clearance price, so it was an incredible time to invest in such a beautiful piece of jewellery.  I am thrilled skinny with it, and feel very spoilt.  Incredible that one of the three was the right size for me!

Mally actually commented on it when I worked with her at the weekend, and she has an incredible collection of jewellery, most of which she wears all the time!  One of her team took this photo of us before her show, while another girly on the floor at her feet.  I thought you might like to come up with a caption for this picture?

Or how about this one – me trying to unlock my knees before my Gtech hour!  I’ll see if I can find something nice for whoever sends the funniest one in 🙂

One final photo I wanted to share with you is of my son Sam and his lovely puppy Diesel.  Sam’s recovering well from his jaw surgery, and Diesel is his constant companion.  It’s hard for me to believe that it was 11 years ago today when Sam was involved in the road accident that caused him to lose his leg. So many years, and so much for him to have had to contend with, but I am very proud of the man he has become.

Well that’s it from me for another week or so.  As always my thanks for your constant support, and please do keep in touch with me here on the blog, or via Twitter, Facebook or Instagram.

With my love,

Ali xx

Hi Ali you lucky girl lovely ring for your anniversary. It was our Ruby anniversary my husband bought same as your ring, but the stone came out,so got refund and bought a lovely diamond band ring to replace it. I remember blow football and the magnetic men. They were funny.
    Take Care x

Oh gosh how disappointing for you, but I am very glad that you got something you loved equally to replace your ruby ring. Blow football was hysterical! But I don’t remember the magnetic men – what were they?? Love Ali xxx

    Hi Ali,

Really glad Sam’s recovering from his jaw surgery. I can’t believe it’s been 11years since his awful accident. What a lovely photo of him with Diesel. My miniature Yorkshire Terrier, Lexi is six now – it’s scary how fast time goes by. Dogs are such wonderful companions, and you can see how happy Sam is with his gorgeous dog.

We enjoyed our lovely holiday in Corfu, but didn’t get to visit where they were filming The Durrells, as we were staying too far away. However, Gouvia was just as beautiful, and so were the islands we visited on our cruise during our second week. Santorini was one of my favourites – so beautiful.

I hope you are keeping well. Watched you the other evening, and you really made me laugh when you mentioned the trousers you wore when you were pregnant. I remember those as I wore them too. Yes, it was 1976 when we had the last long very hot summer. I remember it well, as I was pregnant during that time. My son is now 42! Hope we won’t have to wait that long for our next hot summer, as I’m loving this hot weather – long may it last!

It’s lovely to see you looking so happy and well.

    Love Sue Radford x

Les! What a great name for a dog! I think Diesel is good too, and so very appropriate for Sam because of his obsession with cars! Much better than unleaded 🙂 Sooo envy you having visited Gouvia – we managed to get there once and it was stunning! Santorini too is a very beautiful place to visit. Bless you for sharing your memories – those trousers where ghastly weren’t they! Mind you, with a long top it really didn’t matter at all as only you knew about the net beneath! 🙂 Gosh you poor thing being pregnant during that summer! I was expecting Lucy 9 years later when they had the Band Aid concert and it was stifling then! I too though love the hot weather – long may it last as you say. I hope you are well and happy Sue, always good to hear from you, love Ali x

Hello Ali, Thank you for your super story about the urbane Mr Stigers! We had a wonderful time seeing Dippy, the Staffordshire Hoard, eating a delicious meal & then enjoying such sublime music; he walked on stage singing ‘Fly me to the Moon’ & I was lost. As for Colin’s birthday presents, we are conscious of how much stuff we’ve got, not hoarders but a home that doesn’t need any more pictures etc so coming up with the ideal one was difficult. After seeing Steps last year Colin decided he would like a red leather biker jacket, much to the hilarity of both daughters, but he went off that so I got him an assortment including a first edition book about an expedition to Antarctica that ended, appropriately, in 1958, He collects such books & our front room sometimes smells like a Hay on Wye bookshop. Thank you also for asking whether him up a mountain stays in touch when away, generally he does depending on signal strength but this trip it was fine. He called most days, gave me a weather report, description of food consumed & list of people he’d met – I was amused that one man had travelled from South Korea – in my opinion that’s a long way for a walk, anyway that’s us done. What a beautiful ring & with only three available, one being the right size, it was meant to be yours. You’ve had a good time in the sun & I love Fenasgenser, those are the magical moments of family life. As is the pride you have for your Sam, he’s has dealt with adversity & come through, you have told us about his trials & I trust he’s also proud of what he has achieved. Diesel looks fabulous & is obviously the perfect dog for his owner – the paw on Sam’s leg says it all. I can’t think of a caption for the photo with Mally. However, for the Gtech one it is: “Warning – Eating too much of Richard Jackson’s Bird Food can be purging”. Love from Jo x

    • Alison Keenan July 22, 2018 at 9:56 pm -  Reply

Jo, so glad you enjoyed my memory of the urbane Mr Stigers 🙂 Very taken with your gift for Colin – definitely preferable to a red biker jacket! I LOVE the bookshops in Hay on Wye – would happily spend a whole day in them. I have a small selection of the little leather bound books, and my prized possession is a collection of books that make up the entire collection of The Lady Of Shallott – gifted to Nell in 1904 and signed in ink. Just beautiful. I’m so glad that your Colin keeps in touch while he’s away. It’s always a bit of a worry when you can’t get to them, so it’s kind that he realises that. He misses you too I’m sure.
Thank you for your incredibly kind and thoughtful words about Sam… I was a little hesitant about sharing the film he made the year before last, but am so glad I did. I think he does see how far he has come but lacks self-esteem. We all work hard to help with that 🙂
Still laughing about your caption, and will definitely share it with Richard Jackson! Hope you enjoyed your weekend, love Ali xx

Dear Ali & Colin, congratulations on your 3rd wedding anniversary and what a beautiful ring Colin has bought you. We’ve just come back from a last minute break to the Austrian Lakes. It was cooler there and the breeze off the lake was heavenly,me and the heat don’t get on. Glad to hear Sam is recovering well from his jaw operation and Diesel is so cute.
Honey made me laugh about your eyes being the same colour as a cucumber. We were drawing each other and Alfie said my eyes were brown like an owls and his were blue like the sky, precious moments to be treasured.
Not in work today so have a list as long as my arm for jobs in the house, but it’s far too warm so for now I will put a load of washing on the line and take it from there.
Take care Ali, speak soon love Janet xxx

Bless little Alfie – I hope you wrote that one down. Eyes brown like owls – that’s beautiful 🙂 Stick to the washing on these hot days Janet… it’ll be cooler soon enough as we both know. love to you, Ali xx

Hi Alison, I am wroting this at 2.23 am as like many, menopause and hot, airless nights are making it impossible to sleep and me and the dog are fighting for the best vantage point for the fan..As ever a lovely blog; loving the fact that you have table football. My cousin has one for ‘the kids’ however I tutor his daughter once a week and always end the session with table football…at 52 I am not ashamed to say my competitive spirit is still very much alive!
Your Tanzania ring is beautiful. I bought a white gold and paler tanzanite ring from Q some years ago a d always get compliments when I wear it.
So today is my last day at school before the summer hols as we break up tomorrow a d I don’t work Fridays. I will however be down the pub with the rest of the staff tomorrow evening downing a pink gin and slimline tonic just to be sociable you understand!! I have a brain scan early Saturday morning so I will be sensible…having Lots of headaches and this is just a precaution bearing in mind mum’s brain tumour was growing for about 20 years before it was discovered.
Mum continues to thrive in residential care and spending quality time with her is so refreshing..we laugh a lot, colour together and mum fills me in with all the gossip! We take her out to a lovely garden Centre between Herne Bay and Canterbury as the restaurant is fab and lots of room for a wheel chair. Trouble is every time we go I bring back more plants! Mums buyer has pulled out of her bungalow sale which is causing a lot of stress as we need the funds to pay for mum’s care. Currently Social Services are lending us the money but interest is added so we need to get it sold asap. I have had a bit of a culling in my garden and changed a boring shrub border adding a weeping cherry and bamboo tree for height and some different shrubs and dug out three large box shrubs that were getting woody. It’s going to look fab next year once they’ve bedded in…I have garden jobs on my summer holiday job list along with painting!
Great news about Sam, he’s certainly been through the mill and I am pleased his recovery is going well; diesel the dog is gorgeous and will be a loyal, trusting companion.
Chloe has been accepted on her course although is somewhat horrified that the uniform is grey and not black..’it so washes me out!’
The school fayre was yesterday, very hot and I had 90 bags of fudge which sold out. We charged £2 a bag or 3 for a Fiver..along with the bead keyrings the kids had made we raised a tad over £200 on our stall. I must sing the praises of Callico Cottage too;I bought two boxes of 10 mixed varieties from them directly and when I started to make the fudge on Friday we were a salted caramel bag short in each box. I emailed them and they sent me the salted caramel bags plus 4 extra flavoursby registered post which I received Monday and made up that night ready for Wednesday. Great customer service!
Well it’s nearly 3am so I am going to play my ‘sleep’ music a d try a d get some shut eye. Have a great day. Love Mary

    • Alison Keenan July 22, 2018 at 10:16 pm -  Reply

My dear Mary, I was thinking about you all day yesterday, and do hope that the brain scan went well. I know they will just be being cautious, but it’s understandably worrying for you. Please do let us know you’re ok? Wonderful that your mum is so happy in the home, but I am sorry that you have lost the buyer for her bungalow, and I’m sure the interest on the payments from the council is crippling. Everything crossed you find another buyer soon. I could so do with you living next door and giving me advice about the garden. It sounds as though you will be having a dramatic shrub border come next year. So glad that it brings you joy. Great also to hear about the customer service for Calico Cottage! And even more so that you made over £200 on your stall. That’s fabulous 🙂 I do hope you managed to get some sleep and that you won’t have to wait to get the results from the scan. Worry doesn’t help with that I know.

Take care, and I’ll pass on your kind compliments to Sam. Love Ali xx

    Morning Ali
Another lovely blog from you which I loved reading. Honey looks very happy in the garden with her toys and swing. Next week I will be clearing and sorting our house of toys as my youngest grandchild will be starting school in September so we won’t need as many items to keep her busy. I will miss having her on a Monday and another chapter has ended in her growing up ?. What a lovely young man Sam has matured in to. He has endured so much in life but strong like his mum. Diesel is obviously his buddy!! I loved the photo of you with the GTech. I know that feeling only too well! My caption is ‘ if you want to be a QVC presenter you will have to do better than that – NEXT’
I am spending the next few days clearing clutter as it will annoy me no end not to be able to do it properly over the next few weeks whilst my arm is recovering. Quite a satisfying job once you get started! I’m off soon to see my hairdresser for a much needed colour on my roots. The sun is great but it does lift the colour somewhat. All ready with my Ultra sun hair protection though so all will be well again. Hope your book gets published soon and a get together with the bloggers would be fab – who knows. All for now so hugs and love from me to you. Judith

HAHAHA 🙂 Thank you for it. I too am struggling with my roots! I SO need to get them sorted and my hair cut.. Hopefully this week will clinch it. I am definitely hoping for a get together with the bloggers once my book is out. It would make my year. I hope you’ve enjoyed the weekend, love Ali xx

I can’t imagine any of us can know what he’s been through unless you’ve lost a limb yourself. You I guess can identify somewhat after your own surgeries. He’s very handsome and diesel is beautiful. What a lovely ring Colin bought you. I do hope I can buy myself a gem ring sometime, if not then maybe inherit one!
    Lots of love x

Susan thank you! I have forwarded your comment, along with all the others to Sam, and I know they will cheer him. So glad you enjoy the blog and the photos too. Honey is such a sweetie isn’t she. Not such flattering pics of yours truly, but I’m glad they made you laugh. You’re right, so hard for any of us to understand just how difficult it is to lose a limb, and everything I’ve been through will never come close to those years trying to support Sam while watching him struggle. Every mum’s nightmare… On a happier note, yes, the ring Colin bought me is fabulous and I hope you too will have something special to wear soon. love to you, Ali xx

Glad to hear that Sam is on the mend. Hope Mum’s home-cooking – even soups – is being a comfort.
