The Lurgy!

There seems to have been an inordinate amount of sickness at QVC this winter, probably due in part to mild temperatures but also because of the environment we work in. Until last Friday, I had managed to avoid it but my body finally succumbed with a sore throat and streaming noise when I got home from work Friday evening. I managed to go into work on Saturday and Sunday (well I wasn’t going to miss the final Beauty Day of the year was I?) but I was really struggling.

SJ, from bareMinerals, cheered me up by wearing a sparkly red bow hair band when she applied my make-up live on air during our 2pm show, but it was Andrew from Gatineau who really got into the festive spirit wearing reindeer antlers for our show at 4pm. He looked funny enough but it was the jingling bells that nearly cracked me up every time he moved his head. What a good sport. I hope you all enjoyed the day too?

I had obviously pushed myself just a bit too far as I woke up Monday morning feeling dizzy and nauseous to accompany my streaming cold and sore throat. I rang QVC to say I wouldn’t be able to work and would also unfortunately have to miss the presenter Christmas lunch part 2, and then went back to bed until after lunch time.

When I did eventually surface, it was to find out that I was a cover girl. The WEEK magazine, which is distributed free with the South Wales Evening Post, had put me on their cover – how clever was their headline? ‘Bringing Gower to book – Author has no need to shop around for inspiration’!! I’m looking forward to reading the article when Dan brings a copy home with him for Christmas.

Front page

I still wasn’t feeling great on Tuesday, (fortunately a day off) but I managed to write the majority of my Christmas cards. As promised last week, here is a picture of some of the lovely cards you have sent in, decorating the wardrobe doors in my dressing room. If you’ve put your address in the card you should be receiving one back in the post from me. It was also on Tuesday that I spotted this photo of my niece, Rachel’s, two sons on Facebook. Sam is almost three and Finlay is four weeks – love the reindeer babygro. Happy first Christmas Finlay and let your mummy have some sleep.

Several of you remarked about the photo of Wilfie watching football that I posted last week. His brother, Milo, is more of a film buff! Apparently he sat through ‘Toy Story’ on Saturday afternoon but Sophie didn’t manage to get any pictures of him. On Sunday he couldn’t tear his eyes away from ‘Jason and the Argonauts’!!! My favourite film has been in the news this week. I didn’t realise Emma Freud lives with Richard Curtis who directed ‘Love Actually’. They had gone to a late night screening of the movie in New York and she tweeted loads of behind the scenes info throughout the film. I watched it on Wednesday night on ITV 2 through a whole new set of eyes!

So Vicky won ‘The Jungle’ and Louisa won X Factor (both my favourites) – who will get the ‘Strictly’ crown I wonder? I am torn between Jay and Georgia but maybe a clean sweep for us girls would be nice!
Have a great weekend of Christmas shopping with QVC – there’s a Dyson V6 Stick vacuum cleaner TSV tomorrow ( handy for all those pine needles) and Mally is in town on Sunday with the 6 piece Uptown Chic collection.

I’ll see you for Fashion on Friday, today it’s Nina Leonard, and then tarte make-up at 6pm – I shall be wearing a Christmas jumper… will you?
Much love
Julia xx

      Hi Patricia
I am feeling a little better thanks – not quite over it yet though. I’m so pleased you like my books. I’m looking forward to some ‘me’ time in the New Year so that I can crack on with the final part of the trilogy and other ideas I have buzzing around my head!
      Merry Christmas

    Hi Julia,
Hope you are feeling better? I’ve been a bit ill these last few days as well – sore throat, sniffling, headache etc starting to feel a little better but not over it yet. I had to send you 2 Christmas cards in the end as I forgot to put my address in the first card I sent! Lol I hope you received them both?
Can’t believe it’s almost Christmas and will soon be time to ice my Christmas cake. Hope you are all ready for the big day, I am now, thankfully.

      Hi Alana
Sorry to hear you have this rotten bug too – it seems to stretch on a bit, ten days & still hanging around!
Yes I got both cards thanks – you should have had mine now?
      Merry Christmas

    Hi Julia,
Hope you’re feeling a bit better by now. I hope I’m not coming down with the same thing as my husband has had. I woke up with a bit of a niggley throat this morning! So I’ve been dosing myself up with Echinacea, Vitamin C and Paracetamol !! Of course hubby seems over the worse with his “cold” so trust me to get it now- just in time for Christmas if it takes a hold. I made sure I kept my distance from hubby dearest as when I get a cold it goes to my chest and I cough like anything. I lost my voice one time when I was still working. It was very awkward when I had to answer the telephone. Perhaps him in doors is hoping for a bit of peace and quiet. I end up sleeping downstairs on the sofa as its always worse at night which of course is not good for my back. Anyway lets hope my dosing myself up will have some effect.
Loved the photo of Milo watching the TV. Cats are so funny. Also saw the Christmas card I sent you in your photo too.
Time for bed and some more medicine. Oh, we’ve got some viewers tomorrow to see our house. The estate rang while we were in the middle of having the latest lot of work done. Luckily its all finished now. It cost us more again as the damage was worse than expected and we had to have a support renewed in the roof! We’re keeping our fingers crossed that nothing else goes wrong with the house. It certainly is an expense when you have property to maintain.
Well by the time we read your next blog Christmas will be all but over for another year.
Lets hope next year brings us all what we hope for. But especially, good health above all things.
All the very best, Tina x

      Hi Tina
I’m on the mend but not quite there yet. I seem to be able to fend off illness quite well but when I succumb it takes a while to recover. I hope you don’t get ill.
How did the house viewing go? It’s probably a good time to show it off with all the Christmas decorations.
I will be doing a new blog (probably published tomorrow) which will be my round-up of 2015. It’s been quite a year!
      Glad you spotted your card
      Speak soon

Morning Julia, I’m sorry that you succumbed to such a nasty virus and hope you’re feeling better, you certainly looked and sounded healthier on the NL show yesterday than you did on Sunday. I’m surprised that those pesky germs could keep up with you because you seem to whizz around so much..! As I’ve written before I love cats, all animals in fact, and enjoy the photos you post of Wilfie and Milo. Sox totally ignores television but does change his sleeping place on a regular basis, he’s currently balancing on a round cushion on the window seat and doesn’t look very comfortable. In your previous reply you commented on Ellie’s wedding and the very mild December weather, they are getting married on 22nd, Winter Solstice this year, and the forecast doesn’t look good. We’re getting ready in a cottage literally metres away from the barn and I intend to go out first with a large brolly to ensure there isn’t any passing “traffic” that might cause a Vicar of Dibley style disaster. We are all wedding and Christmas ready and I’m about to write my lists of all the things we have to take. Thank you for all your wonderful presentations this year; always informative, knowledgeable, professional and totally glamorous. There are still those who are amused by my fondness for the Q; they usually want to know where I bought my jewellery, boots, coat, sometimes I tell and sometimes I don’t – I shall continue to watch, enjoy and buy. I wish you, and all you love, a Merry Christmas and the best for 2016. Love from Jo aka Flirty PointyToes x

      Hi Jo
I really hope the weather is kind for Ellie’s wedding tomorrow and that you all have a wonderful day.
It has been great fun(???) wrapping all the Christmas presents with Wilfie and Milo around! Once again I will gave to stick with u breakable baubles as I can’t trust them when the tree goes up. You’ve seen Wilfie ‘tapping’ Peony plants & flowers, well he does the same with Christmas tree branches.
Thank you for your really kind comments and speak to you on here in 2016.
      Merry Christmas
      Julia x

Your niece’s two boys are lovely arent they, Sam looks so proud of his brother.

I have nearly finished your second book, can’t put it down. Loving it.

It is funny how Cat’s watch the TV, we use to have a Cat who would watch the snooker, and swipe at the balls.

Anyway you take care and a very Happy Christmas and New Year to you and your family.

    Love Jean xx

I haven’t quite shaken off this bug yet but certainly much better than I was.
Sam has always been adorable and you’re right, he looks so proud of his little brother.
I can’t believe you’ve almost finished the new book, how have you found the time in the run up to Christmas? I’m so pleased you’d enjoying it so far.

      Hi Linda
Sorry to hear that you have the lurgy too – hopefully you will feel better soon.
It was definitely the right three in the final of Strictly – on the night I think Georgia edged it (I actually applauded her Charleston) but equally happy that Jay won – a joy to watch.
      Merry Christmas

    Hi Julia
Sorry you have not been well. Me & my hubby got virus too!! Can do without it this time of the year hey?.
Thanks for mentioning to ‘Presenter Manager’ about the presenters hours being put back onto the TV GUIDE again. I know a few of my friends will be pleased too. Let’s hope!!!!
So like to keep up with you & the hours you are on air. Like I said I love the fashion hours so much. Will keep an eye on TV guide in new year. Thank you for prompt reply. Don’t know when your on QVC over xmas !!!! Will keep an eye out for you!!! Hope you have some precious time planned with your family. All the best.
    Julie xx
Ps SAMBUCAL- Elderflower extract (from Boots) is great to take this time of year to build up your immune system. I have an illness & take it winter time to keep away bugs!!! It comes in medicine & tablet form. About £8.99 bottle but worth getting it when the 3 for 2 offer is on. Hope this helps. Maybe with your condition like me you need a little BOOST in the winter. There are other remedies on the market to so might be worth looking into it!!!!! Good luck & HO HO HO. Xxxx

    Hi Julie
I hope you and your hubby are on the mend and thanks for the tip about Sambucal – I’ll check it out.
Fingers crossed that the TV guide will get sorted in the new year but as an FYI I’m on today at 18 & 20, Wednesday at 18 & 19, Boxing Day 17 & 18 (I think – don’t have my diary with me) and Sunday just 17 ( again, I think, could be 18). All of this is subject o no-one being off sick of course.
    Have a Merry Christmas

    Hi Julia
Sorry to hear you haven’t been well but happy you looked all better last night on The Q.
Wilfie has good taste (apart from football that is)!! Jason and the Argonauts is a great film. That made me smile.
We put our tree up two weeks ago but then had to move it from the hallway into the dining room and close the door as Casper kept chewing the bottom branches and making himself sick! Is yours still standing I wonder?!!
I was very happy to see Jay win Strictly and, as usual, I thought he was undermarked by the judges. He seemed totally shocked at winning but then he has been so unassuming throughout the series despite his brilliant talent.
It was quite a full on weekend so I didn’t’ manage to write the review on Amazon but will definitely do so over my long and lovely Xmas break. (Sorry to rub it in!)
Really disappointed I won’t see you at the Beauty Bash.
Have a wonderful Christmas and all good wishes for a very happy and healthy 2016.
    Lots of love
    Marian xxxx

      Hi Marian
Just a quickie to wish you a Merry Christmas – it’s a shame that I’ll miss you at the Beauty Bash but QVC allocated the days.
The good news is that our tree is still standing – at the moment – we have had a few Wilfie ‘tapping’ moments though and both of them trying to run off with the tinsel!
I was pleased for Jay although I think Georgia’s Charleston was outstanding!
      Enjoy your loooong break
