With the clocks going back this Sunday, and much enthusiasm going around at the prospect of an extra hour snuggled up in bed, we thought we’d take the time to conduct a survey and find out what makes Brits happy – turns out it’s the little things.
We’re very pleased to announce that we’ll be welcoming Philip Hodson as our on-air guest for Radio Day today to discuss the results. As a qualified psychotherapist and long-time broadcaster, he really is in the know when it comes to how we all tick.
But first things first…
Based on our findings, it doesn’t take too much to put a smile on your faces; so let’s get to the all-important top 10.
No. 10 – Babies giggling (39%)
Turns out we’re a load of old softies at heart, with plenty of people agreeing that chuckling babies made them happy. And going by the reaction of anyone when an adorable little nipper starts grinning at them in the shops, we’re not going to disagree with this one.
No. 9 – Receiving a bunch of flowers (40%)
40% of you guys love getting them, and we certainly adore them too. Plus, with our Peony blooms, there’s no better way to brighten up your home or someone else’s day, with a bouquet that will last for years not days.
No. 8 – The sound of laughter (43%)
Proof it really is contagious.
No. 7 – Reading a good book (51%)
From Harry Potter to Middlemarch, many of you really enjoy a good book.
No. 6 – A hug (54%)
The perfect pick-me-up!
No. 5 – Climbing into a clean bed (55%)
Ahhh freshly washed, wonderfully scented linen. In need of some? Kelly Hoppen‘s got it covered.
No. 4 – Finding money (57%)
No arguments there – from the back of the couch to the back pocket of those long-forgotten jeans, discovering some dosh is always a winner.
No. 3 – Sunny days (59%)
Now us Brits are well known for our regular discussions about the weather. But with our temperamental climate, who can blame us? So it’s no surprise that sunny days make it to number three with a huge 65% saying it makes them happy. Not too hot though obviously, we have our limits.
No. 2 – Receiving an unexpected gift (65%)
65% of the people we surveyed said that a surprise in the form of an unexpected gift is the top thing that makes them happy. With everything from Gower Cottage’s Handmade Belgian Chocolate Brownies to Annie Bell’s Baking Bible, we’ve got plenty to ensure you raise a smile on the face of someone you love.
No. 1 – Receiving a compliment (68%)
In at number one, with 68% of people saying it made them happy, it’s receiving a compliment. So splash out on some pretty jewellery (rumour has it Lisa Snowdon has designed some gorgeous new earrings), revitalise your make-up (oh hello there Prismatic Eye Colour Enhancing Shadow Palette from tarte), and ensure you always look and feel your best so those compliments keep rolling in. And of course, don’t forget to give out your fair share, because making others happy is fabulous too.
