Thank you so much

Tabby bagI just wanted to say thank you so much for all your messages of support on last week's blog. I did start to reply to you all individually but I became overwhelmed by the number of messages and also what was contained within them. I am truly sorry to those of you who were shocked by my news and my heart goes out to those of you fighting your own health battles… let's hope we can all win in the end. I will keep you up to date with my progress from time to time on here.

One of the most difficult people to tell was my mum, not least because she has her own health problems, and in the beginning I was a little economical with the truth until I knew that the drugs were 'doing their thing'. She has not been properly well since she got the shingles two years ago so I decided to treat her to something a little different this Mothering Sunday.

One of our Production Assistants at QVC, Jacqui, has set up her own business called 'Ruby's Boutique' making personalised jute shopping bags. This is the one she made for my mum with 'Tabby' on it… cute eh? I won't be able to see Mum this Sunday as she is going to a dancing school show but of course I will be speaking to her on the phone.

Julia's cardI will however be spending time with my two children, we are going shopping for a few bits and bobs to take away on holiday on Monday. I had delayed booking a holiday until I had the results of my latest blood test but they were good so Chris and I are going to Mauritius as a belated 35th Anniversary holiday. I've never been before, and it's on my 'bucket' list, so we are both really looking forward to it. I will take loads of pictures and put them on my blog when I get back.

It will be the second evening out as a family this week as we also went out on Monday to celebrate the launch of my book on QVC. The family had bought me some beautiful flowers and I also had a lovely bouquet from Keeley and everyone at Elemis which Sophie's flatmate, Gilly, had struggled home with on the tube as I had already left before they arrived.

As we sat down in Zizzi's restaurant with a glass of prosecco they also handed over a card. It said 'Clever Monkey' and Chris had stuck a small picture of my book cover and a label saying Chapter 60 on it. The relevance of this? Chapter Sixty in my book is about the year cycle of the animals and their elements in Chinese astrology and I am a monkey! I do love my family… and Gilly of course!

I probably won't write a blog from holiday but I will write a bumper one when I get back… just wondering what to take as my holiday reading? Any suggestions?
Much love, Julia x

Hope you have a lovely relaxing holiday. After reading your quite unbelievable blog the other evening I felt the need to send you a message.
You are a brilliant presenter and a truly inspirational woman, I would never have guessed what you have been going through. My thoughts and best wishes are with you and your family for continued good health.

I wish you a fabulous holiday – you more than deserve it and I hope it exceeds all expectations.
If you like non-fiction I enjoyed a biography on Coco Chanel by Justine Picardie and the novel Me Before You by JoJo Moyes has been recommended by everyone who has read it but I haven’t got around to it yet as I currently have my head buried in a book called One Hundred Lengths of the Pool which I would definitely recommend!
Can’t wait to see the photos when you get back – have a safe trip. Best Wishes Michele.

I am so sorry to hear about your illness and just want to wish you well.
I have struggled for many year with illness and was facing going down the liver transplant route. I have decided to take control of my own health as nothing GPs prescribed helped!! I am eating raw foods and cutting out sugar. I am also detoxing my body. Lots of my symptoms have gone and thankfully the itching / burning skin is improving. It was totally destroying my life. I have recently been speaking to a friend who knows of a number of people with different type of cancer using apricot kernals and they are doing really well.
I hope this message doesn’t upset you, I just wanted to inform you.

    Hi Julia
I hope you have a fabulous holiday. I’m only 5Ft tall can you fit me in your suitcase? I think we are all desperate for some sunshine so if you can’t fit me in your case please bring some back with you!
As for holiday reading have you read any Jasper Fforde? He’s completely bonkers but brilliant. The first book is called ‘The Eyre affair’ which crosses sci fi,crime and comedy which is both brilliantly complex and addictive and I guarantee if you like it you’ll end up reading the other six in the series and also another couple I love are ‘The Big over easy’ which is basically a surreal detective novel with a comedy twist and also ‘The 4th bear’. They are all completely different to anything I’ve read before and I can highly recommend them.
Have a great time, get nice and brown (don’t tell Alison) and bring me some sunshine please.
    Love Jacqueline xxx

I have had a wonderful early Mothers Day present tonight when my son and girlfriend visited to announce they are getting married – woohoo! I had suspected something in the air as they went to Paris this week to celebrate 5 years together. We are going out for lunch on Sunday so lots to celebrate.

Your book has arrived and I cannot wait to start and no I shall read it as written and leave 101 till the end. Will have finished by the time you are back I’m sure.
You will love Mauritius and will be a total rest for you & Chris to chill out with some much needed sun!
I have just read The Fever Tree by Jennifer McVeigh (it’s one of Richard & Judys book club reads) and was very good. Also Darcie Chan’s The Mill River Recluse. I’m sure you can buy both at the airport. Really good reads and just right for a holiday.
Love the bag you should get one made for you! I’m lucky I am at my parents this weekend, my Mum has had a stressful 12 months as my Dad had a bad car accident and has been in and out of hospital quite a bit so she will be spoilt tomorrow.
Have a fab holiday and enjoy Mothers Day.

Following your appearance on Monday launching your book, I just wanted to send you hugs and to say that I was shocked and brought to tears with your recent news. I do not often visit the presenter blogs so was unaware. I have ordered your book and look forward to receiving this. I have been watching QVC for approx 16 years and you are my favourite presenter along with Debbie and Charlie. I have QVC on instead of a radio when I am doing housework, its like having friends over with your constant chatter. My first buy on QVC was Joy Mangano (??)’s roll up jewellery box; I am sure you will remember her. I have had cancer myself twice, once as a child and once in the nineties, so I have been there with the chemo etc and still get followed up at UCH myself. Take care Julia. Lots of Love Sandra xx

    Hi Julia
it seems a bit mad to be writing to someone from the telly that i will never meet and who has no idea who i am and yet here i find myself doing exactly that. Over the years of buying mainly the beauty bargains from QVC i have gotten used to you and find myself say ing “oh Julias on with Butler and Wison or elemis” as though i know you. My partner will say ” you speak about that woman as she is your pal or next door neighbour” and whilst I will never know you i do think you would make a lovely friend as you come acrsss as a really nice person , I wish you well with your current situation . My cousin had leukamia and was very ill indeed about 20 years ago and yet she made a full recovery and is currently perfectly well. Keep your chin up and all the very best.

    Hi Julia
Well, there you go, advanced orders on your book…brilliant news, well done! One question though, how are you going to sign them all when you’re on holiday until end of March? Maybe you have a secret stash at the printers?
It would have been nice to have been one of lucky ones who won your personally signed book competition, but to be honest, it’s just as nice knowing that in buying your book, some of the proceeds are going to your preferred charity, which is fantastic!
Have a great time, you thoroughly deserve it, both of you, that is! Lots of SPF’s, otherwise you’ll have Ali Y on your back on your return!
One last thing and I hope you don’t mind me saying, but the last week, since you’ve ‘outed’ yourself, so to speak, you do look a great deal brighter and happier than you have done in a very long time. Mus be the relief that a great weight has been taken from your shoulders!
Talking of weight, I have put on nearly 2st and gone from being a size 12 pre-accident to a size 14 now. I still exercise, when my ankle allows, but not to the extent that I was. It is frustrating, but I have to forget about the past and just live with it for the moment and hopefully down the road I will be able to shift those pesky pounds!
Take care and have ‘fun in the sun’!
    Annette x
Hope you managed to watch or record the last episode of Mr Selfridge, which is back next year for a second series, brill!

    Hi Julia,
For so many years I’ve watched QVC and admired you. I like everything about you – your beauty, grace, sense of humour and your style of presenting. For the first time today I started reading your blog and was shocked with the news that you been so unwell. From the bottom of my heart I send you my best wishes, but when I can recommend to you a book by “Andreas Moritz – Liver and Gallbladder Miracle Cleanse”. He has also written a book about cancer which I’ve not read yet.
My dearest Julia I’m a mother of 2 like you and cherish my kids everyday. Both of them are in there early 20’s my son is in his 3rd year studying Physics at University and my daughter completed her modern languages degree. They are both unique and very different. My daughter Victoria is strong headed, independent and extremely popular and confident. Where Stuart my son is very clever academically, very loving and caring (because he is so tall he’s not embarrassed to kiss my forehead when we’re out walking). I m originally from Poland – came here 26 years ago after marrying my English husband in Poland.
I always watch how you dress and your make up, and I always listen to your opinion, I’m not embarrassed to say you are my idol. You are such a warm person I thoroughly enjoyed reading your blog, especially when you write about your children and family (I miss my parents and family in Poland enormously).I hope that you are enjoying your break, and let us know when you are back. Sending you my best wishes – Basia (Barbara in polish, Basia in English – Babs) xx
PS – I nearly forgot my daughter and I are regular shoppers at QVC and my daughter lately, after reading how friendly a place QVC is, announced to me that she is planning to apply for a job. Whatever the result I’m sure it will be a good experience for her to see QVC from the inside.

Alison Young will be very pleased with me as I wore Decleor factor 50 on my face and chest, and factor 30 everywhere else so I am not too tanned! Also had to sit in the shade quite a lot on some days.

I am tanned but not too ‘overcooked’ if you know what I mean. Sorry I didn’t bring any sunshine back – we left in the snow and came back to it ….. it’s March for goodness sake!

    Hi Ginny
I’m home after a lovely holiday …… it’s snowing here in the UK!
I was a very good girl sitting in the shade a lot of the time and wearing SPF 50 on my face and neck and SPF 30 on my body. Chris used Ultrasun but I love my Decleor. Didn’t take a baseball cap ( can’t remember where I packed them when we moved) but I bought myself a straw hat and Chris had a Panama – very dapper.
Hope all is ok with Jeff

My book is going to be available as an e book later in the year as soon as the QVC exclusive period is finished. If you get it I hope you will enjoy it

    Hello Kathy
Wow that 11 days went so quickly wish we could have stayed in Mauritius a bit longer but Chris had to get back for a gig.
We were on the west coast at Flic en Flac and it’s gorgeous …… beautiful long beach if you like to walk and stunning sunsets. We did go up to the north west on a day out but I must say I preferred where we were. You say that September is not a good time to go but the locals say it is the best time as it gets very hot from end of November in their summer. You risk a bit of rain but it’s worth the risk! I think it would be a fab place to celebrate your 1st wedding anniversary – we loved it

Thanks for your very kind words. We had a fabulous time in Mauritius and would happily have stayed longer . We were on the opposite coast from Le Tousserok but I think our hotel is run by the same company, Sun Resorts. I imagine it was a very romantic place to go on honeymoon …….. now there’s an idea LOL.

    Hi Joy
Thanks for your holiday reading suggestions. I did buy a couple of novels at the airport but didn’t get round to either of them ….. didn’t even manage to finish Love Lies by Adele Parks which I have had on the go since January! I did however get a fantastic idea for a novel …… it was almost as though someone was feeding me the idea, I just kept scribbling and scribbling notes in the little book Daniel and Sophie got me for Mother’s Day called Hold On People …. I”m having an Idea …….. Somebody Pass Me a Pencil!
Hope you enjoyed Mother’s Day with your mum and dad and that your day’s health will improve soon

The children didn’t come to Mauritius with us as they were both working so it was just Chris and I. We had a wonderful holiday which ended all too soon

It’s good that your cousin has made such a great recovery particularly as she was diagnosed when the treatment was very different. Thanks to huge steps forward in the research into treatment for blood cancers there are now several drugs which are effective at bringing the different leukaemias under control. As long as the drugs keep working I’ll be fine.

Back from hols now and we both had a fabulous time – just what the doctor ordered if you get my drift!
Yes I did manage to watch the last episode of Mr.Selfridge. I’ve really enjoyed the whole series and looking forward to the next one. Have you been watching Broadchurch? I saw the first episode and Daniel has recorded the last two for me so I need to go and watch those once my blog replies are finished ….. How decadent, an afternoon in front of the TV, mind you it’s too cold to do much else!
I know what you mean about putting on weight – it’s annoying when your health stops you from doing what you want to do but I guess I should be grateful I’m still here! I do feel liberated now that everyone knows about the CML – I haven’t liked keeping secrets but it’s out now and I have been really touched by everyone’s warm wishes.

    Dear Julia,
I do not know you except for the charming, funny presenter I have come to know in the last year since I have been a QVC UK shopper, your crazy American QVC UK shopper. What some of you have come to know is that I understand all too well that sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach that you most certainly felt when you learned of your diagnosis. Mine was stage 4 breast cancer, with no previous occurrence at all, from healthy to dying in 2.6 seconds.
A little voice in my head told me at that moment that I would get rid of it and I believed it so much that I fired my first surgeon and went on to a full remission in 7 months – against all odds. I told myself that for every 2 years of life I could buy with current treatments, there would be that many more to get me over the next 2 and so year by year I bribed myself into believing I could do it.
June will be 4 years, and with the help of a book that Debbie Flint suggested, I am now defying science again and dissolving a tumor on estrogen receptor blocker alone. Another oncologist told me not to expect the same results that I had been experiencing and I did not like her negativity so I fired her too.
I suppose the reason I am telling you all of this is that I have had one message to share since my diagnosis and that is do not give up. And if your doctor does not agree with you that you can get well, get a new doctor. There are amazing new treatments and the old stand-bys are being used in more and more effective protocols and combinations.
You will cry just as I do and you will feel tired but you can do it. You are surrounded by love and a supportive work place which is more than I received – I was fired when I relapsed last time – the fear of cancer is stronger than human kindness sometimes.
If you need anything, please ask Debbie how to contact me – and see what I have learned in years of research about the disease at my website Help Your Own . I almost hesitate to list that so as not to seem like that is my purpose but there is a great deal of good information about the disease – I prefer not to give it the respect of calling it by name – disease is all it deserves.
May God continue to bless you.
