Olley and I had a lovely walk by the river a few days ago. It’s something we used to enjoy together often when we had our lovely dog Barney, but since he died we haven’t done it so much. We had a reason to go this time – to cheer on a mermaid as she swims 120 miles from the source of the River Thames at Lechlade all the way to Teddington. She’s planning to arrive with a final flip of her tail around 3pm on Saturday 24th.
The ‘urban mermaid’ is Lindsay Cole, the daughter of a friend of ours. Linds describes herself as a bit of an adventurer which I’d say is pretty accurate! She has cycled solo from the north coast of Africa to the southern tip, walked the 1100 plus mile long Rabbit Proof fence in Australia and now she has set herself the challenge of swimming the length of the non-tidal Thames wearing a mermaid tale. She wants to raise awareness of the huge level of plastic pollution in our waterways. Linds is being supported by her artist friend Barbara de Moubray who is paddling a canoe carrying a mermaid sculpture she created from 600 plastic bottles. The two campaigners are gathering as much plastic rubbish as they can carry along the way and recycling it whenever they can. They are also stopping at schools en route to help educate children about the issues surrounding plastic waste and single use plastic packaging, and to inspire them to change the choices they and their parents make regarding plastic.
Olley and I felt all this deserved a bit of a cheer on, so we met Linds and Bla (as Barbara is known) at Temple Lock as they set off upstream towards Marlow. Good on you both!
