Spring is in the air!

Sunshine definitely reaches the parts other things just can't!!!! Oh the difference it makes after all the snow. Ok, it's still January but…….the promise is there!

How are we all? That sometimes seems such a loaded question doesn't it? Fine, Great, All good, are all easy and regular responses, but how REALLY are we and do we dare delve deeply enough to find a true answer….

Well, I decided to subject myself last week to a full-on MOT, not for the 4 wheeled lovely in my life, (a quick once over was sufficient for her!) No it was for me!

Mixed feelings

I admit it was with mixed feelings that I swung into action, gosh that makes me sound young, fit and agile. But once my appointments were booked I found myself pondering on the "What ifs". Dan gets terribly cross, although in a very patient way at my "What Ifs", "What if they find something", "What if I have something", or indeed, not have something that in all my nearly 46 years hasn't come to light…you can understand that I'm not the coolest calmest of customers if you've been following me and my ramblings, politely called blogs!

This then led to the question would you want to know? It was most interesting hearing peoples take on this. Mostly it was the answer yes, because then at least you would have an opportunity to make changes and be armed with knowledge to make informed choices. Interestingly it was mostly men who gave me the answer NO, that they would prefer not to know.

So off I toddled armed with a HUGE questionnaire that I had answered, smug in the knowledge that I had recorded four very super healthy days of food and drink…or so I thought!

I found out during the course of my nutritional and physical analysis that I have considerably shrunk…the 6 foot model proportions that I have been (in my head ) are now a measly 5ft 6" and a quarter! It's all those years of dancing and lying about my height that did it. So that's it, it's official and noted…how very disappointing!

Still my height and weight is all hunky dory, the weird bit was that I have to now eat more. It transpired that my calorie intake is insufficient and waaaaay too long between each intake! So I now really have to focus on healthy oatcakes, hummus, natural nuts etc. added in at regular intervals and not my usual feast and famine style of eating.

Again I blame it on my dancing days when you kind of didn't want to eat a lot when you were being thrown around by your male counterpart and generally contorting, wiggling and careering around at the rate of knots! I was always terrifically grateful that I escaped the dreadful food issues that I had witnessed around me so often, but unwittingly was making bad habits of my own.

MeMind you check out these pictures I came across the other day. Whoever snapped the shot on the right with the feathers…I LOVE YOU! Think they must’ve lain on the floor to get my legs looking that good!!

But goodness, the shoulders on the other one, oh how bony – unintentional, and the result of landing a big TV Job. Iwas the new whipper-snapper on the job so the older girls gave me a tricky time, all part of the process supposedly… and oh my we worked soooooo hard. I was chosen by Jeff Richer a hugely talented taskmaster/perfectionist/brilliant yet vile and scary choreographer. It still sends chills through me just thinking about that time!!

The one thing that has been brought to my attention though from the health check is that I have an exhausted adrenal gland. So, interestingly when I felt not quite me, let's just say a couple of years ago, that really was a warning and one I will have to work hard to readdress.

Lifestyle changes, both in the form of yoga, breathing (easier said than done!!) and changes in how I think too (again easier said than done!) are all so very important. I have a book called the Pre So,  back to the question, "Would  you like to know?" Well I consider myself extremely fortunate and can Thank God that I am not having to deal with other news and that yes things for now are looking alright for me, I am a lucky girl.

Spring is on the horizon

TulipsThe snow has all gone here now and oh how lovely it was out walking Gus today as he gallivanted around with the wind whipping his ears and my hair every which way!

A definite feeling that spring is on the horizon, beautifully added to as I’m writing this and looking at a glass vase bulging with tulips that a friend had left on my doorstep for me. What a treat and a perfect match with my curtains…how very clever of her!

Now, I worked with Mally this last week and Teeny her wonderful and sensational right hand  woman. You know when you meet someone who is SO nice you think, hmmmm is she REALLY that nice? Well she is!

Laura DernWe ended up discussing looky-likeys and she and in fact Joan Rivers too are quite freaked out it seems by my resemblance to Laura Dern, the American actress. So the other evening when Dan and I were finally sitting down to eat (yes ANOTHER change required!! Earlier eating in the evening) he Googled her and we had to agree there were similarities….what do you think?

When I had shorter hair it was Bridget Fonda and once I was accosted in London with tourists thinking I was Lady Di!!!! It's funny isn't it and got me wondering IF I had a sister would we look similar? She probably would have been the 6 foot model type!!!! Imagine if we had the ability to post pics with your replies, I could see your looky-likeys too.

As January closes I look back and realise we have survived the notoriously ploppy month, in fact I think we actually embraced it and fitted in quite a bit of what I'd call… socialising

Silly Party TrickExcuse the Miranda moment we were attempting to make up for the wash out December. Girlie gatherings, cinema trips – that Les Mis was incredible I sobbed a lot. Snowy sledging with friends, oh ok that was Dan and the children!! And a January Party at a friend's house, silliness and laughter was the order of the night and I think this photo sums up just that.

Forgive me but "What's your party trick?" was the question. We couldn’t resist, believe me you'll be grateful I didn’t do another of my party tricks, though probably best left in the memory banks! Take a look, I won't name and shame my girlies tempting though it is.

Lookey likey friendA: I am totally flying the flag for QVC! Both my fab leather (faux) dress was from QVC and my beautiful knock out ring, and EMUs for the walk home at 2am!! B: Surely our mothers warned us the wind might change!

Oh and in this picture don't you think the blonde one has a striking similarity to…answers please!!!!! I might even root around in Miss Young's  Dressing room and find a prize.

OK, I have an airing cupboard to sort out! And metallic leather snakeskin fabric samples to order!

I feel a boudoir mood board coming on – just need some money! I thought I would  leave you with a recipe. No do not faint, it's a non-cooking kind, you know me…

RecipeLots of love for now from me to you, speak soon,
Claire xxxxx

    Hi Claire,
What a lovely blog! And so pleased you are ok. Good to reassess once in a while though. I too bought tulips this week! Couldn’t not – they’re such happy flowers to me! I hope all your bugs are away by the way, including Gus’s! I’m glad you’ve had a lot of socialising after the nasty December as well. Good for you! You’re friend looks like Caroline from Liz Earle to me…tis Caroline isn’t it?
Take care and enjoy the snow free weekend!

Hi Claire, Yes it seem we’re heading into that lovely feeling of Spring (though we still have sometime to go). Glad your MOT went ok,know how you feel I have to have my thyroid tested every year to make sure I’m on the right medication..so far so good the levels haven’t changed for about 12 years now. Those pictures are fab…but surely your never nearly 46 (thought you might have made a type error). You look truly fab, must be your busy life style and lovely family, my Nanna always said that hard work and family life always kept us young and my Mum is nearly 90 Claire. Well must head off this gorgeous bright day to take Radley out for his walk, he really is keeping me fit. Love Linda xx

Hello Claire, Second attempt at this response as I got timed out yesterday..! If that one did get through hopefully someone will delete this one otherwise it will be very boring to have two that are fairly similar. I am pleased that you have come through your health check and that you can deal with an exhausted adrenal gland, I have never heard of this happening – will it always be exhausted or can it get its energy back? I had blood tests and a health check just before Christmas; the computer questionnaire did not recognise that I am veggie who dislikes anything wholemeal and never eats pulses so my results were odd to say the least. I was also told to have further blood tests done to look at my liver function, that makes me sound as though I am always on the fizz which I am NOT, but I hate hospitals so much I have ignored the piece of paper and not returned which I know is wrong. On to other matters – I agree that there is a slight similarity between you and Laura Dern but you are so much softer and classic and your smile is warm and shows your love of life, I can also understand why you would have been compared to Diana. A man in a pub garden (back to drink) thought I was the actress Harriet Walter and told me that he thought I was really good in the Lord Peter Wimsey series! I think your friend looks like Amanda Holden or Liz Earle or Christie Brinkley. I am also about to do a mood board, it is for a memorial garden we are planning at school to honour a student we lost last year and much as I love both gardening and our school it will be a poignant task. When I wrote my first response yesterday the sun was shining and the world looked bright and ready to welcome Spring, today it is much colder but the buds are fat on the camellias and magnolias and the snowdrops can be seen from the bedroom windows so the change of season cannot be far away and with it the return of longer and lighter days which is a lovely thought. Love from Jo x

Hi Claire a few weeks ago you presented a diamond show where I saw the scatter band ring (607439), I know this is a clutching at straws type of question but can you recall if this ring is able to be re-sized? I ordered a ring recently and had to return it because it was hollowed out at back and was not able to be re-sized. The jeweller I took the ring to said that is done to keep the cost of the ring down due to the escalating cost of gold. The ring I am asking you about starts at size L, I am usually a J or K, and I recall you saying it is true to size.
    Kind regards

Hope you have a fantastic February!!!

Hi, sadly tulips went to tulip heaven today …sad, but wonderful whilst I had them, trouble is now I want MORE!
Gus is finally back to good pup health, though we re soaking his food as I think his tummy was affected by the virus he had. Also I’ve been told that grit, for the snow may have irritated as it may have some anti freeze in – terrible for animals.
Thank you ever so much for asking after us all, aside from a sorely ear for Tom, all good! Oh and your answer is logged, xxxx

Linda, I’ve missed my Gus march today, hope Radley’s on fine form!
I’m anxious about my thyroid too as its a family issue, my mummy has problems with hers. I think she defies the medical books….not great. I’m glad yours stays steady though.
Poor Tom also has his checked yearly as it can go hand in hand with having Downs Syndrome , his last time he said, “OW YOU HURT ME” poor nurse!!!!
Oh and ssssssh but no typo!

Morning and hoping sun shine is with you, its here in Chiswick, but a bit like the batteries are running out…on and off!
Talking of batteries, I jolly well hope I can renew the exhausted bit of me!!! It’s funny when you try and breathe you barely can when you focus on it, weird!
I think yes I can address it. Interestingly I have a weirdly high bilorubin count which is a liver related one…but no concern. I think it’s from being a terribly jaundiced baby and it never went down. Go and check, I feel better for doing it honestly.
They said 10% of my calories were from alcohol, well it was just after Christmas! How is the mood board coming on, that’s a tough task. I don’t envy you that, though task may be arduous I feel the result will be worth it..GOOD LUCK!
Uptown girl,Liz and Miss Holden are logged!
one is never enough! Hope the girls and repectives are all gorgeously good?
    Speak soon, Claire xx

I have a lot of fine hair that needs a continuous boost,in my youth it would have been a perm but I dont ‘permed contrived curls’-I want healthy bouncy hair.

    Hi Gill,
I’m always flattered and happy to share, I am lucky to have fine but tonnes of it and a natural wriggle to my hair. I use, and always have heated rollers to style it. The volumising oil from Percy and Reed is super, just a touch mind you.
Pop back as I’m planning to have a little video just so everyone who is interested can see the whole! Process from wet to done! Hoping Will Gowing will help me out!
