If you’re one of the millions of Brits heading off on your holidays this summer, one dilemma facing any stylish woman is what jewellery to take. Do you risk taking all your finery in case your bags disappear between check-in and the baggage carousel? Do you wear that treasured family heirloom into the sea? Will your travel insurance cover valuable items if anything happens?
If you’re not taking the chance, our jewellery experts have pulled together some easy-to-follow advice so you can rule the pool (or piazza, or portaloos…) without breaking the bank, wherever you’re spending the summer.
Departing for: Spain, Greece, Algarve, Turkey
If your idea of heaven is a pristine pool and a liberal slather of factor 20, jewellery during the day is best kept to a minimum to avoid accidental tan lines. Wear a long necklace over a beach dress and add a braided bracelet for some colour when you retreat to the shade for lunch at the nearest taverna.
Come nightfall, when it’s time to get a bit more dressed up, a refined ring and some subtle stud earrings should do the trick.
Departing for: Bali, Goa, Thailand
When travelling abroad it’s worth remembering the local norms and customs, and with this in mind ‘understated and modest’ is the order of the day when visiting some far-flung parts of the world.
Look for dainty, fine bracelets that’ll go with your floaty kaftans and maxis when sheltering from the sun. To best accentuate your tan, seek out golden pieces with natural elements like leaves or animals, or muted stones like mother of pearl.
Departing for: Berlin, Barcelona, Amsterdam
If the thought of spending day after day laying as still as possible gives you itchy palms, a city break is likely high on your list of priorities. The bustling nightlife of Europe’s cosmopolitan metropolises holds much appeal, but it pays to pack light as you’ll probably be carrying only hand luggage.
Go for classic, simple pieces that you can wear with any outfit, and perhaps just a statement necklace or two.
Departing for: the Mediterranean, Caribbean
On a cruise holiday, all the rules are out of the window. Every night is a special occasion, every day a lazy stretch by the pool, every stop a city break. You need to stock up – which is okay, as you’ll likely be carrying lots of luggage and have abundant room for plenty of pieces.
Timeless elegance is a must if you’re to stand out against the backdrop of your ship’s opulent surroundings of an evening, so opt for big, bright stones and statement necklaces that will elevate your outfit to red carpet territory. For daytimes, see our tips for City and Poolside breaks above.
Departing for: a field near you
Gone are the days when a music festival was all about surviving three nights in a muddy field wearing your warmest, most comfortable clothes. Now they are places to see and be seen, showing off your style sensibility to maximum effect.
Packing light is paramount, though, so rings and bangles are where to focus your attention. Ditch fussy boho designs for achingly cool geometrics and simple stacking pieces to create your own Instagram moment.
