Summer Beauty Saviours, Week 2: Face

InfinitypoolThe summer weather causes stimulation of oil glands and increased and quicker dehydration. This affects the texture of your skin without even mentioning the obvious effects of skin ageing and sun damage.

The most common question I get asked is โ€˜How do I use my sunscreen and still use all my other beauty brands?โ€™

On very hot days or on holiday, I think it is safest to apply your sunscreen only and use one that has anti-ageing ingredients, such as UltraSun.

When using once-a-day brands like this, it is essential that they go onto dry skin, as you may be caught out – if for example, you put it on straight after a hot shower, or too late in the morning if it has got hot or humid and your skin is perspiring.

High 50Try to apply as early as possible before going out – about 15 minutes or so after a shower and let it settle for at least 10 minutes, before attempting to apply make-up or any other products. I find it safer and easier during the summer months or on a hot day to follow this beauty routine of applying Ultrasun in the morning only.

Remember you can use Ultrasun's tinted formulas, and a great new product to add to your summer skincare/make-up wardrobe, would be the launch of Ole Henriksen's, Perfect Truth, CC Eye Cream. This gives you anti-ageing eye care combined with CC (colour correcting) make-up technology. So, it's fantastic for that no make-up, cheat product around the eye area.

Early evening or when you come off the beach; shower, cleanse and do an after-sun routine. Then before you go to bed, do your anti-ageing beauty routine. If you follow this three-step skin routine you will prevent many of the skincare problems associated with hot days.

Remember if you're sunbathing, the best after suns are gel in texture such as the formula from Ultrasun and SBC Aloe Vera Gel.

If you are in this country and just going around on a normal day, working, or having a day off, then you can perform a similar routine of applying Ultrasun in the morning, then an early evening skincare routine (which can include anti-ageing) and lastly, before bed, a full skincare routine with all your anti-ageing. If you have stayed in, than you don't require cleansing again, just reapplication of all your serums and oils.

SunbatherIf you are using repeat application SPF such as Alpha-H, Protection Plus Daily SPF 50+, in many ways your routine can be easier because you can do your normal, morning full skincare regime, then apply the factor 50 – you do need to reapply again throughout the day.

If you're sunbathing carry your Australian Body Care skin wipes to prevent product build up and do a quick cleanse and reapplication.

During hot periods, all skin types need to potentially exfoliate less or with a less aggressive product. If you're using a strong scrub or a micro-dermabrasion either weaken it by mixing half and half with your cleanser. Or step down to a gentler one – Elemis Gentle Rose Exfoliator is fab as itโ€™s also in a cooling and hydrating gel so great for after sun. Otherwise enzymatic products from Gatineau, Elemis, Decleor, Sarah Chapman or Alpha H Liquid Gold would all be suitable.
