Honey making trifle

Still to come…

Hello there!

I hope your day’s going well?  I’ve just spent the last hour filling in a rather lengthy form online, as my driver’s licence is due for renewal. It’s a good job they wrote to remind me as it’s not something I would ever think of checking, and what’s really handy is they can access my passport photo rather than me needing to get a new one taken! You’d be happy to have your passport photo on your driving licence I hear your cry?!  Absolutely!  At least my passport photograph bears a passing resemblance to myself, rather than the rodent like creature with a letterbox mouth who is currently on my driver’s licence! Vanity is a terrible thing eh? : )

Well another two weeks have whipped by and here we are in the middle of August! Rather good of QVC to have a summer clearance I thought, just to cheer us all up as the weather’s been so grim. I do hope you found a few bargains, including the Ninja Chopper that was our TSV on Monday? Honey chose the ingredients for our smoothie when she stayed with me last week, and Lucy made this dinky little film of the two of us – thought you might like to see it. : )

I also enlisted Honey’s help the week before when I had my family Sunday lunch. It was her job to put the sprinkles on the trifle I’d made. As you can see she did an excellent job, and the trifle was wolfed down by all and sundry… mainly Colin though! I’m afraid I didn’t take any other photos of my children – it’s not that anyone is precious about having their picture taken, it’s just that we were so busy with each other I didn’t think of it! Suffice to say it was a really special day and something I hope to do again really soon.

Honey with trifle

A rather special day for me this Friday too as I’m presenting QVC’s Morning Show at 9am with Kathy Tayler! Completely opposite end of the day for me to be working, but I’m very much looking forward to sharing the show with her. Our TSV that day is a beautiful scoop necked top with a really pretty flared sleeve detail from the Coco Bianco range and will be available in a myriad of different patterns at under £34! I hope you can join us.

I’m teaming up just briefly with Jackie Kabler too for a very special ‘Fashion Night In’ on Monday the 14th August. MarlaWynne’s TSV will have led the day, but we are featuring the fabulous H by Halston range, along with many more of your favourite designers in the Autumn Catwalk Collection. There’ll be special prices too, so don’t miss it!

I have a meeting soon with our Diamonique buyers as we are finalising a brand new “I Hope” pendant design. It’s been a fair few months since Colin and I started working on the original idea, and we’ve included not just the Diamonique stones, but some colour too. Hopefully it will be ready to buy in time for the October Breast Cancer fundraising month – watch this space!

Something else I hope to have news of very soon is my book. I am incredibly fortunate to have found a publisher who is very interested in the concept, and we are meeting again in September. I can’t begin to tell you how much it would mean to me to have it published, and those of my colleagues here at QVC who have read the draft have all been incredibly kind and complimentary about it. I don’t want to jinx it by saying any more, but as it’s you who inspired me to write it, you will be the first to know if it goes ahead. : )  Exciting times…

I’m off to Cornwall for a few days with my friend Jo which will be fun, although we’re taking our Pac-a-Macs and wellies just in case! I’ve not been to Cornwall since 2011 and as Jo knows the area like the back of her hand, I’m sure we’ll find plenty of new places to take pictures of.  Whether you’re staying at home or heading to the sun, I very much hope you enjoy yourself, and please do keep in touch. Una, Alpa, Sue, Jilly, Karen, Debz and Helen, I very much hope all is well in your worlds.  Drop me a line if you have time – thinking of you.

With my love,

Ali xxx

Hi Ali, hope you have a good time in Cornwall. My husband and I went for a few days at the beginning of July and it was the most glorious weather, we stayed in Looe, a place we had not visited for 34years!, we also visited the Eden Project and The Lost Gardens of Heligan, fabulous both well worth a visit. Look like Honey will be a budding chef in the future! Merchex

Dear Merche, lovely to hear about your trip there in july. We too were very lucky with the weather, and had a wonderful three days. The Lost Gardens of Heligan sound very much up my street, so I may well have to re visit to see them 🙂 I hope you’ve enjoyed the rest of the summer although I know August has been a bit damp! Love Ali xx

Hi Alison, great to catch up on your news. What a lovely clip of you and Honey making the smoothie – she’s so cute. You must be thrilled to have her as a little helper! That trifle looks delicious.
I know what you mean about passport photos showing a resemblance in my case it’s the one on my gym card. It’s about 8 years old I have different colour hair and my face is yellow ( it was the camera)I look like something from Sesame Street!
I was looking back on your blogs and saw that you’d asked me who I got to see when I went to Wimbledon which I hadn’t replied to. Well we were lucky enough to see Johanna Konta who came through a very tough game then we saw Andy Murray play Dustin Brown. Exciting enough eh but for me the icing on the cake was seeing Rafael Nadal play the American Donald Young. My friend and I were still pinching ourselves the next day we couldn’t believe we had been so lucky to get centre court tickets in the ballot.
I do hope all goes well for the book Ali I can’t wait for it to be available so I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you.
I love Cornwall so I hope you have a wonderful time there and look forward to hearing about it. My memories of our last time there 2 years ago was all the lovely tea shops it’s a great are for foodies with the fish, pasties, fudge etc. Think I put on half a stone oops!! We’re heading off to Liverpool for a couple of days staying in a lovely boutique hotel to celebrate our 33rd wedding anniversary. We’ve stayed there before and it’s one I’d recommend. The weather isn’t looking too good so we will just see how it pans out. We are going for lunch on the day at Gino Da Campo’s restaurant which having sampled the Leeds one I’m excited about. As my hubby was born and bred there he was hoping to go on a trip down memory lane with a journey on the famous ferry which his grandad took him on as a boy. Fingers crossed we can manage it. I have to wait a few days for my present as its a Kipling bag on wait list its due out on 21st so it will be good to have that to come home to.
    Enjoy Cornwall.
    Love Denise xx

Dear Denise you’ve had me laughing out loud with your description of the passport photo! I actually got my new one back within five days, and it is certainly an improvement. It is my brothers birthday today, and he is a tennis somatic, so to know that you had been able to see all those big names at Wimbledon would’ve made in green with envy! So glad you enjoyed it and were lucky with the ballot. That is how I got to go there with Roz six years ago. Thank you very much for your encouragement about the book I will keep in touch. I wonderful time in Cornwall but you are right about all the food! I don’t think I consume so much carbohydrate in three days for years. I love you you’re celebrating your anniversary and 33 years to! I did not realise that Gino to Campeau we had a restaurant in Liverpool. I think he is fabulous, and great fun to watch. It sounds like it will be special for your husband to as he grew up there. That is what my trip was for to Cornwall as my friend hadn’t been there for many years. I hope you have a wonderful time, and do let me know how you get on. The Kipling bag will be waiting for you! Love Ali x

    Hi Ali

Am currently watching you on the Lunchtime Shoe. It looks like you’re having such a good time and it’s certainly perked up my lunch time!

So nice to see you on QVC during the day. I don’t watch too much in the evenings so to get you on now is a real bonus, it’s like an old friend visiting me!

Thank you so much for thinking of me. I really do appreciate it, especially as you seem to have so much going on at the moment.

I’m hanging on in there, some days are better than others. We went out for a meal on Wednesday evening to celebrate Neal’s late Mom’s birthday. I really didn’t want to go but I’m so glad I did as I really enjoyed it in the end! She was such a lovely lady that I felt I couldn’t let Neal down by not going.

I hope you enjoy Cornwall. I’ve been to the Eden Project on a day trip which was wonderful, but haven’t stayed in Cornwall for a holiday. Maybe someday!

Again, thank you for thinking of me. Love to you and everyone in Ali’s Army!

    Lots of love.

Dear Debz, thanks for getting in touch, and very sweet of you to mention the Lunchtime show. It was great fun, as was the Morning show which I shared with Kathy! I very rarely work that early in the day because I sleep so badly but I did enjoy it. I’m sorry that you’re still struggling, but I’m glad that you’re still getting out and enjoying time with Neal when you can. I’ve never visited the Eden Project, but we were so lucky with the weather we spent all our time out walking. You take care, and thanks for getting back to me. Love Ali xx

I had a bit of a fall the other day we were just about to leave for a day at durlston country park in swanage and I slipped of the doorstep bruised my shin and knee and twisted my already bad ankle so painful so I have finally decided to go to the doctor’s to see if some physio would help with the fluid retention I get on it .watch this space . Dear Loraine, I am sorry it’s taken me so long to get back to you, but I’m sure you had a lovely time looking after Willa while Clare and Geoff were away. I hope that you’ve recovered from your fall though, as it’s difficult keeping up with little ones when you’re feeling anything other than 100%! Cornwall was beautiful, and Padstow is where my ex husband and his family still take there holidays. You’ll enjoy Windsor but it is a little up and down on the pavements, so I hope that your knee and ankle have eased. Keep in touch, Love Ali xx

Mind you I realise I’m rather late in responding so you’ve probably been back ages already. Look after yourself – we’re all good here! Love Alixx

Morning Ali, Awful August continues, it’s more like October here & I’m wearing a poncho..! Love the photos of Honey & her sprinkles, the work surface looks very tidy – Colin & Tallulah decorated gingerbread men ( no gender equality needed for biscuits) yesterday & there were sprinkles everywhere including in her hair. I have spent these wet days catching up with stuff & people & also decorating a table & making lampshades – Pinterest inspires me though my efforts look decidedly homemade. We have also had people in doing the house maintenance that we can’t; our home is now a lady in her 80s & the roof needed specialist help, fortunately I found the most amazing company who have done a grand job. The news about your book sounds great & there are so many of us who’ll be hoping it gets published. How lovely to be going to Cornwall, a county very special to me because that’s where Colin proposed. I love the contrast of rugged coast & pretty villages, Heligan, Mevagissey & I adore the name Demelza but knew that Demelza Downey didn’t sound right so one day I shall have a rescue greyhound & she will have that name. Trusting that your hospital results will come back with positive news, have a lovely time with your Jo. Love from this Jo x

Dear Jo, By the time you read this, hopefully you will have put away your poncho, and have been basking in the garden over the Bank Holiday Weekend! I love Pinterest, and my friend Roz regularly collects images of all kinds of things. I felt very inspired to re-do certain parts of my house having visited Cornwall, and how lovely that it’s where your Colin proposed to you! We stayed in Polruan and crossed by ferry to Fowey – both were beautiful. We did a lot of the cliff walks and managed to find a few beaches – photographs in the next blog! It’s a long journey and my Colin said that when he and I go, we may take the train and hire a car the other end. My cousin lives in St. Austell and it would be lovely to see her too. Great that you found a good roofer. We desperately need tiles replacing here too – I’m on the lookout. I think Demelza Downey has a certain ring to it….! 🙂 keep in touch, love Ali xx

    Hello Ali
I’ve had a busy morning trying to make my home look like home again! Considering two people Iive here it’s unbelievable how much tidying up I do. I managed a couple of hours in the garden this week reading and pottering. The garden is definately starting to turn autumnal and the leaves are beginning to dry out. What happened to summer? I loved the trifle you made. Honey obviously didn’t spare on the sprinkles and that’s the best part. Little girls love doing these things don’t they? My youngest grand daughter brought some cup cakes this week and mine was the one with the finger print on it. She chose it specially for me she said. These “Special” ones are always the tastiest…. we are having our hall, stairs and landing redecorated whilst we are away so have just finished talking with the decorator. My husband normally does the DIY but I insisted somebody else does the hard work now. We neither have the energy or the time. All should look lovely when we get home. Well we are going out now to,choose some new door handles to,finish the job off. Until next time take care and love and hugs as always Judith xx

    • Alison Keenan August 29, 2017 at 11:13 am -  Reply

Hi Judith, lovely to hear from you, it sounds as though a bowl of trifle is what you needed before you started your grand chores in the garden! You’re right about feeling autumnal, most of the chestnut trees around here have lost their leaves already! Yes Honey and I love working in the kitchen together, And it sounds as though the special cupcakes complete with fingerprint were delicious 🙂 What a fabulous idea to get someone in to do the decorating so that when you return it will all be sorted. I seem to spend so much time rushing around even on days off there isn’t much spare. Hopefully in the winter months, I may find time as our sitting room looks very tired. I hope you chose nice doorhandles, And will enjoy your holiday. Take care with love, Ali xx

    Hi Ali,

Thank you so much for thinking about me. All is good in my world, and It’s been really lovely to read all is good in yours too. I often think about you, Una, Debz, Alpa and all the others in Ali’s army. I often read your blog even though I don’t always write.

Little Honey is gorgeous! Doesn’t time fly – it only seems like yesterday when you proudly announced her birth. My granddaughter and grandsons are growing up far too fast too – it’s frightening where the years have gone.

I absolutely love Cornwall. I hope you’re having a fantastic time there with your friend. Watch out for those potholes though. Do you remember when I said I’d tripped and broke my nose when I visited St.Ives a few years ago. Thank goodness everything healed well, apart from a few minor scars!

Wishing you every happiness, and more importantly, good health.

    Love Sue Radford xx

Hi Sue, great to hear from you and to know that all is well in your world. Nice to know that you are still reading the blogs, and please don’t feel that you always have to respond but it is nice to know that you’re still there! I do have a dim and distant memory of you telling me that you had broken your nose. Very pleased to hear that it healed well. Luckily no falling over for me, just a lot of walking and enjoying the sunshine with Jo. We had a ball, and the weather could not of been better. You are right about honey I cannot believe that she is growing up so quickly. Her speech is quite remarkable and she holds a complete conversation with you. It’s been lovely for Lucy to spend so much time with her as it is the school holidays, but back to normal next week. I’m back with Dominic tonight at eight, so see you then thanks for letting me know you are well. Love, Ali xx

Dear Debz, It’s so lovely to read your comment. How are Harry & Lily? I’ve heard about cat who was left behind by her owners when they moved; she’s 16 & needs a home for her twilight years. I feel I ought to take her but I’m worried that Sox, who is much-loved, will feel jealous & so I’m in a quandary. Take care, Jo x

    • Debz August 30, 2017 at 1:41 pm -  Reply

      Hi there, Jo

Harry and Lily are really good thank you. They’re currently having a lunchtime nap after chasing each other all morning!

Is your Sox a good mixer with other cats? If you could give that poor, abandoned cat a home it would be a wonderful thing to do, but you must consider Sox. I couldn’t have taken another cat when I had Ainzley as he was feisty, grumpy and a Mommy’s boy! However, I think Harry and Lily would be ok as they are more laid back. Don’t worry if you feel you can’t offer her a home, there are other kind hearted souls like you, who may be better placed to give her a home.

Thank you, again for your kind words.

      Debz xXx

Hi Ali… Isn’t t funny how all little girls love the kitchen and helping …my granddaughter Jessica still likes baking… Her Dad paid for her to go to a cookery school in the Lake District a couple of years ago as a treat… While she was there he went off walking and taking photos of the countryside …. When he returned she had made some lovely things …including a box of cakes to take home …she loved it…they were quite delicious…. They have been in Canada now for over two weeks and have been to some beautiful places….The scenery looks awesome ….They are in Calgary For the remainder of the holiday and are due back next Wednesday no doubt there will be plenty to talk about and lots of photos to look at when they return… I’ve missed them…. But Fiona has been around in between work and Safe Swim throughout the holidays teaching kids how to be safe at the seaside … At the weekend she is taking part in the Scottish swim with her friends they have booked a lodge for the weekend hope it stays fine…. As the weather here has been hit and miss most of the summer….Thank you for your mention on QVC and you were right with the Auchterlonie bit…I laughed because everywhere I go when I am waiting to be called I Just know when its me because they stand and say Mrs???????and have an attempt at it so I know it’s my turn ?? How did you come on at your check up… I do hope the outcome was positive….and Cornwall with your friend hope you have a great time look forward to the update…. So until next time I send my best wishes take care of yourself …love Chris x

Chris you’re right. I also enjoyed being in the kitchen with my mum, and then later in Domestic Science classes at school. I think that’s fantastic for Jessie to have gone on a cookery course. I’m looking at maybe a cookery course via an Italian Restaurant close to where I live. I really enjoy learning about new flavours etc. By the time you get this your brood Will already have returned from Canada and I’m certain we have managed to get to see you over the weekend. Fiona sounds as though she’s been busy, but I’m glad she still manages to get in and see you. Not sure if the weather will be good for her Scottish swim, but no doubt shall have a laugh with your mates. You’re very welcome to the mansion, and I’m glad I got the pronunciation almost right! I’m seeing my oncologist tomorrow for results so will let you know of course. Take care, love Ali xx
