Spring cleaning your beauty stash

At this time of year, there’s nothing like a good spring clean.

Getting out all your beauty palettes, tubes and tubs, washing your make-up brushes and creating a beauty wishlist (everyone needs an incentive) is one of the easiest ways to take stock of your collection, see what’s not in tip-top condition, and find out which crucial products are missing. Here are just a few of the ways we like to spring clean our beauty stash:

Check your expiry dates

Make-up has a shelf life, and even longstanding beauty faves need to be binned at some point! Bacteria, heat and humidity can all impact how long your products stick around for.

Here’s how long (approximately) you should be holding onto those beauty essentials for – and remember, check the packaging for each brand’s recommendation!

  • Powder (eyeshadow, blusher, bronzer, mattifier, foundation etc.) – 18 months to two years
  • Mascara – three months
  • Liquid foundation – one year
  • Liquid eyeliner – six months
  • Lipstick and liner – one year
  • Make-up sponges – one month (make sure to wash after each use)
  • Nail polish – one year

It’s also worth keeping an eye on any changing textures or scents, and make sure to follow the general rule of: if it feels or smells different, bin it!

If you want to be super on top of your shelf lives per product, a handy tip is to keep a record of when you first opened the product up, or even write the date on the packaging itself.

Do you need those duplicates?

We’re all creatures of habit, and sometimes we stockpile similar shades without even realising. Streamlining your stash will ensure you get more use out of the products you really love, and help you avoid making the same choices down the line.

Check make-up palettes for similar eyeshadow shades (we’re guilty of hoarding shimmery gold-champagne colours… they’re just so pretty!) and have a look at your bronzers too: one regular size pan will last for ages, so do you really need five?

It’s also worth using up one mascara after another, rather than using three or four at the same time – mascaras have annoyingly short lifespans.

‘Project use-it-up’

Famously fickle for switching between products? Why not commit to using up a selection of products, before you move onto anything else? This little project will allow you to really get the most out of your palettes, lipsticks and other products you regularly dip in and out of.

It’s also a great opportunity to experiment with colour and texture… and when you’ve used up your chosen product, toss it in the recycling and feel like the green goddess you are!

Treat your loved ones

Now that you’ve culled all those identical beauty finds, and put aside anything that doesn’t really suit you anymore, it’s time to share the love with your friends and family.

We love creating little goody bags with perfume samples and skincare sachets, along with eyeshadows, lippies and anything else we think will float their boat. Just remember to sanitise products – Australian Bodycare Skin Wash is a great multi-purpose product for washing brushes and product packaging.

Treat yourself!

We hope you’ve been working hard on your beauty wishlist, because here comes the big reward: if you’ve binned your old mascara, why not check out our great range, including bestsellers from Eyeko and Benefit… or maybe you’re after a streamlined eyeshadow palette? Tarte’s huge selection is sure to have something to suit your preference.

If you need a complete lipstick wardrobe after using up all your old favourites, this Laura Geller Lip Crayon collection has a shade for every occasion – and the slim packaging makes these great for storing too.

Whatever you’re looking for to update your beauty collection, we’ve got everything you need (and more) in our Beauty Department.
