The sofa saga

As you know if you have been reading my blog for the last couple of weeks, we are making a few changes to the house to get it Christmas-ready. We had the paint issue last week where the colours, when painted on the wall, simply didn’t match the colour chart. Eventually we decided on a shade called Egyptian Cotton, which we painted on the walls on Monday. Although that also dried a different shade we are happy with the end result … or maybe we just couldn’t face painting it for a third time!

What I didn’t mention on my blog last week was the saga with the sofas. We had decided to buy some affordable sofas to get us through Christmas and potentially pass on to Sophie when she has found a new home. They arrived last Thursday and I nearly cried when I saw them.

I hated the colour, the size and the style and they were really uncomfortable to sit on. I wasn’t sure if the company would take them back but thankfully they had been delivered late and Sophie was able to use this to encourage them to offer a refund. They had to be re-packed in the plastic that Chris had ripped open when they arrived so we had to stick it all back together … a great way to spend two hours on a Saturday afternoon!

So, with the sofas being returned and the old sofa we had been using in many pieces courtesy of Chris’s saw, we had a problem … people coming for Christmas and nothing to sit on. Fortunately we have conservatory furniture, which is now in the lounge and we have ordered some new sofas with a delivery date promised for the week of the 16th December. I hope they stick to their promise! I’ll keep you posted.

Sophie hasn’t been too well this week with a stinking cold – Chris and I have managed to avoid it so far so instead of having time off work altogether she has been working from home, so I was quite pleased to get out of the house on Wednesday morning as I had a Gatineau facial booked.

They had offered me a facial as we have the TSV on Sunday (pictured above) and it would be a good opportunity to use the products on my sensitive skin. Despite a dreadful journey there, road closures, the changing of the guard in Windsor, a full car park and my oil light coming on, it was a lovely relaxing hour and my skin felt soft and smooth afterwards.

Speaking of TSVs all of them from now until 21st December are on Easy Pays so if you need to spread the cost keep checking out the TSVs.

Yesterday was Daniel’s birthday and we finally met up with him at 8.30pm for dinner, followed by present opening and chocolate cake eating. It’s a shame we couldn’t have stayed longer but Sophie had to be up at 6.15am for work, bless her.

I have a busy weekend ahead with the Saturday Night Show (we have a great Doll 10 collection kicking off the show) and of course Gatineau on Sunday. And then on Monday I am with Simon Wilson for his second-to-last day of Butler & Wilson shows this year so I hope you will join us for that.

Can’t finish without saying well done Palace for a great performance against Liverpool last Sunday … keep it up, boys.

Have a lovely weekend

Much love,
Julia xx

Hi Julia, glad to see you settled on Egyptian Cotton – it’s my favourite paint shade ever and I have it in every room in my house. Not too yellow, not too pink and not too beige…and softer than just stark white.

It does look slightly different in every room as the light is not the same throughout the house and it does darken slightly as time passes – hope that helps put your mind at ease and good luck with the second delivery of sofas!!!

p.s. I’m looking forward to the LD TSV on Tuesday – one can never have enough nail polish (over 230 and counting!!!)

      Hi Lorraine
He is a very knowledgeable man and good fun too. Sophie is still working in recruitment but in the beauty industry now which she is preferring.

Wow, the furniture mishap sounds horrendous, but u were lucky they took it back…Still love my daybed instead of sofa [when I can get on it that is fordogs] I too have been painting and my candles have proved a godsend in masking the smell of gloss paint.Have been known to develop terrible headaches after painting, so really happy Yankee candles to hand.

Also felt moved to unpack Bethleham lights tree, and it is really beautiful. Does the job perfectly without any of the usual hours of fishing out tree decs then taking hours to dress it.

And tonight my fav. B&W with you controlling:~} Simon. Some lovely pieces as usual and succumbed to red star brooch. I do actually remember the lights in Regent Street, so was delighted to get this brooch.

    Warm regards, Carrie

      Hi Carrie
We haven’t been doing any gloss painting but I agree with you the smell gives me a real headache. My main candle is Under the Palms at the moment – reminding me of warmer climes!
I usually wait until about ten days before Christmas to put the decorations up but might wait until the sofas have been delivered this year – always assuming they arrive on time. I do like a real tree but last year we bought some cheapy unbreakable baubles as the cats were only young …. pretty sure I’ll be using them again this year with Wilfie and Milo chasing each other!
There were some lovely Christmas pieces in the Butler & Wilson show … it just seemed to go too quickly only being one hour.

    Hi Julia,
I had to smile when you related your sofa story. We bought “cheapy” wardrobes from a well known retail place intending them to be just until we could afford better ones as we had so many things to buy on our last house move. Well, 13 years later we are still using them! There has always been something else that we needed the money for.No-one else see’s the bedroom anyway and they have held out better than we thought they would so hey ho! Well we had a very tense Saturday watching our beloved Wales play against South Africa. As usual we were prepared for the usual of starting off by leading the score and then in the last few minutes its gone, only this time WE WON!!!! Wales 12: South Africa 6. Oh ye of little faith! It was so tense, I needed a lie down after. This was the first win against South Africa in over 100 years. I bet the streets of Cardiff were over-flowing with the celerbration’s. Now we’ve got 9 week’s to wait for the Six Nations matches to see if we can keep it up. Our first game is against England!! So watch this space!
I’m glad someone else asked the address of QVC as I wanted it also to send Christmas cards.
Hope you get everything sorted with your sofa’s in time for Christmas.
All the best from Tina S.

      Hello Tina
Well done Wales – I didn’t realise you hadn’t beaten South Africa in such a long time. Palace were in Wales last weekend at Swansea – it was a draw so much better than our home game against Aston Villa on Tuesday … Not only did we lose it was a poor second half.
We still have an Ikea wardrobe that has survived three house moves but it is a little wonky now.
I got the refund for the sofas I hated so just crossing everything that the new ones arrive when promised.

Hi Julia, firstly, how could you refuse the offer of jumping on the couch with Andrew from Gatineau, well not literally of course, but still… I can imagine all the ladies shouting at the TV saying how they would give the right arm, me included lol!!

Hope poor Sophie is feeling better, I’ve had something in the background, so dosing myself with plenty of Vit C at the moment. Such a shame about your sofa, nothing worse, but at least you managed to get a refund with Sophie’s help, fingers crossed for 16th.

I ordered some shoes which now have to be returned, if only they did half sizes (not from Q, by the way). It will have to be a refund as I know the next size will be too big, argh! Must say though, very happy with the plush onsies from Q, never thought I’d see the day in one!

Sorry must go, just received parcel via Royal Mail and the bag had been ripped open, contents on view etc…getting really fed up now with these deliveries (again not from Q)

      Hi Annette
What do you mean??? I did tease that I had been unfaithful to him though – referring of course to the throat gel! I had forgotten how much I liked it.
Sophie is fine now and touch wood Chris and I seem to have avoided the lurgy. As I mentioned in other replies I have had a refund for the sofas I didn’t like …. she can be quite feisty when she wants to be.
Sorry you’ve had dramas with deliveries but pleased they weren’t from us. I was very impressed this week. I ordered a small panel heater for our downstairs cloakroom and was told delivery would be between 6th & 18th December … it arrived yesterday and is perfect for the job.

    Hi Julia
Glad you got your painting finished. Gosh you must have been upset when the Sofas arrived and they were not as you expected. What a disappointment. Lucky Sophie was there to help out.
    Hope she is feeling better.
I bet your facial was lovely. I did buy the Gatineau TSV what a brilliant offer. Looking forward to receiving it.
Have watched some of Simon’s shows he has had some lovely things on.
Have you made your Christmas cakes yet, as you usually make one for everyone at QVC don’t you.
    Take Care.
    Love Jean X

      Hello Jean
      Sophie is fine now thanks!
Yes it was disappointing to see the sofas – they really spoiled the room after all our hard work. Still, I have had the refund which has gone someway towards the cost of the new ones I have ordered and just hoping they arrive on time. Actually we are coping really well with the conservatory furniture but it just means we can’t sit in there at the moment.
Hope you enjoy your Gatineau TSV and pleased you caught some of the Butler & Wilson shows.
I made one Christmas cake yesterday and will do the other one this weekend when I’m not working at QVC.
