Rapunzel… not just yet!

Percy & Reed No Oil Oil Collection - 200254So three months into the big hair marathon and I think I've shed a few tears! I'm actually surprised to say that I've really enjoyed each stage so far – which seems to go rather quickly as I've stepped through goodness knows how many styles these last 12 or so weeks!

One question I get asked time and time again is why? Why am I growing my hair? Well, not that I think one needs a reason, but I do think there are a few. I always used to have long hair in my 20s but invariably wore it tied back, however, here we are 20 years later and the products and tools available to us are so much more sophisticated and able than ever before.

With every hair show I've done over the last couple of years, I've found a little voice in the back of my head saying 'it can work for you too!!' I've LOVED having pixie short hair for the last 15 or so years. I've done lots of fun things but more recently the fun started to dwindle and I found it less inspiring – perhaps I've grown out of the short hair! Ha ha! Who knows?!

What I CAN tell you though is that so far so good! I'm using totally different products than I've used in years, I've reintroduced myself to a hairbrush and the art of blow drying, and as my hair is wavy (which is what allowed me to do so much when it was short) my hair straighteners are happy to be in action on a daily basis (thanks to Percy and Reed's heat protective spray!). So, one day at a time – let's see how long it'll go before I get bored. Hopefully I won't and it'll be ok.

Talking of products, I'm using way less than ever before AND taking a lot less time with my hair! The maintenance is WAY less than it was when it was short!!! Everyone I know with long hair says their hair is high maintenance, but you never wake up looking like a bog brush and within seconds you can sweep it out of the way, whereas short ALWAYS needs styling in order for it to actually look half decent and my colour (now that my hair is longer) is lasting nearly three times as long… partly helped by the fact that I'm very close to my natural colour now – it's those twinkling silvers that I try to ignore!

So as quite a few of you on the blog here and also on Twitter have been joining in with growing your hair too, here are some pics as requested charting the first three months of the marathon. Not yet Rapunzel but we're on the way! Hang on in there and remember at every stage, your hair has different needs.

Pipa's hairstyle - stage 3 Pipa's hairstyle - stage 4

Pipa's hairstyle - stage 5

The product that worked great on your hair a couple of months ago, might not be so good now. Products I'm finding fabulous at the moment are Percy & Reed "No Oil Oil" (above) for fine hair as well as their Heat Protective Spray as I straighten it a lot.

Also Richard Ward's Shampoo and Conditioner for fine but plentiful hair … and I love Liz Earle's new hair serum (launching on QVC UK on April 12th …so keep your eyes peeled!!)

Pop Sunday June 2nd in your diary as I've a beauty show which has been written way ahead of time to feature all my favourite products. We'll be talking hair in that hour alongside my favourite skincare and make-up products so it should be fast and furious because there was a very long list!!

And just one more thing … if you're having a bad hair day, hair rarely looks great when you get out of bed (might seem an obvious point, but it's true!) So make the most of the tools and products available because they really make the hugest difference – my hair would look terrible if I didn't!!

Now, I've got to pack my hand luggage as we are off to Tenerife in the morning! My straighteners and Percy and Reed hairspray (another great rediscovery of mine!) will be last in and first out!!

See you back on air, Friday 19th April xx

oh and btw, keep the tweets coming in, you know we love them 🙂 I'm twitter.com@pipalive

    Hi Pipa,
Well I am jealous again as another presenter is off on their sunny hols! You will be in Tenerife now! Hope you get nice weather and the kids enjoy as much as you. Look forward to the news! I love your hair, you know that, but I adore your hair in ‘stage 3’. Your hair off your face I think is so pretty. But you will suit whatever you grow it to as you are fab wit hair!
    Enjoy the sun!

I really think your hair is looking great. Im always intrigued as to how it is going to look when you’re on. I don’t get to see much qvc these days so sometime you look soooo different to me. I love the colour too. It is similar to mine so i like to see the different make up choices you use for inspiration. I grew my hair a few years back and i remember how frustrating it can be. There seems to be a stage that you just think it’s not worth it, but when you get past that it’s great. I also must say i like you on qvc because of your energy and the conversations you start are interesting and amusing and fun. Hope you’re well. Love Rebecca.

Hope you enjoyed your holiday in Tenerife, been many times in the past usually down south. Las Americas and surounding area’s.

Loved you hair when it was really short and blonde. They say that those who wear short hairstyles have more self confidence than those with long hair. I always think that those with long, glamorous hair are always self obsessive as they have to kep looking in he mirror and preening themselves! But I’m sure you’re not like that.
    Good luck!

    Hi Pippa,
I hope you had a great hols.
Like you, I’m growing my hair from very short to a longer length bob style, so, I’m really interested in what products you use and how it’s going along. My hair is “dead straight”, so, I don’t have the hair straighteners, but the brush and hairdryer are a new invention to me.
Look forward to reading more on your blog.

I was actually plucking up the courage to have my hair cut short, based on your ‘usual’ short ‘off the face’ style. I love it- it really suits you and shows off your bone structure beautifully! I never thought short hair could be so funky. Now I’ve put the idea on hold – I keep thinking there must be a reason you’ve decided to get rid of it!
Anyway, I think you suit it loads better off your face, with no fringe. Even if you grow it longer, you are def a ‘no fringe’ person Pipa.

Hello Pippa, I have to say when I heard you were growing your hair I was really excited and pleased. Your short styles have always been fab and fun but I knew you would look amazing with longer hair. I started growing my hair from bob length about 10 months ago and I’m loving it. It’s so soft and shiny and healthy looking. I don’t currently use any products but am thinking of trying Percy and Reid. I wanted to ask you if you have been using any supplements to help your hair grow? Me and my husband ( he is also growing his hair, wants to be an old hippy again) we have been taking skin, hair & nails supplements for months and we feel they have helped with the condition of our hair as well as how fast it is growing. Have you got a target in mind of how long you would like it to get to? I want mine down to my bottom 🙂
    Much love Michelle

Hi Pippa, i was in my Doctors surgery this week and they have a small tv with medical information on and i heard your voice. Your hair wasnt dark so maybe you made the programme some time ago.
Read your blog today and see you are growing your hair, like you i think longer hair is far easier to do than shorter styles.
Like you I have had a dramatic change at the hairdressers today going from blonde to dark!! I am originslly dark but have been blonde for 6/7 years! I like it but will have to get used to it will see what rection i grt from family friends and colleagues. Hope they like it!
Hope you enjoyed your holiday, like to watch yougr slots on QVC. Julia x

Love the hair. Can’t deny, longer hair is very versatile. You can change the whole look of an outfit just by whether your hair is pinned back or loose, sleek & straight or wild & crazy.
I’m growing mine and am determined to achieve my pension age with the longest wildest pepper & salt coloured mane (and I did have a shaven head in my 20’s too!)
Keep growing, it’s soooo worth the effort. 😉 xx

Hello ladies, thanks for all your lovely comments and apologies for not replying sooner. As soon as we got back from holiday I leapt into putting house on the market mode so it’s been a bit busy to say the least!!!
Holiday was wonderful thankyou, it was soooo good to get away from everything and just BE ….not to mention not worry about tidying, cleaning or cooking!
I’m not taking supplements for hair growth Michelle although now you’ve mentioned it it reminds me that Percy and Reed sell one in their salon which I had pondered a while back so I might still do that. It’s been so fun growing my hair so far and to be honest I’ve enjoyed every step. This last weekend I wore it naturally on air with all the curl untouched and twitter went mad which really took me by surprise. I really thought I’d grow my hair and get a keratin treatment to take out the curl but now I’m not so sure. It’s been short and sleek/close to my face for so many years that I just hadn’t imagined big hair on me again ….so with a bit of 80s but revamped I think I’ll keep it this way ….not sure how long I’ll go …again I planned on below the shoulders ….we shall see!
Hair is fun, life is what you make it ….all that jazz ….so if you are growing yours (I feel we should start a club) then keep going …..and if yours is long and you fancy cutting it all off, I can’t tell you how liberating that is too ….life is too short to get hung up about these things!! xx

dear pipa I am just watching you with Stacey from ybf I think that the hairstyle you have at the moment is the best yet it really suits you, it is actually very similar to the style i have tried for years to get a long list of hairstylists to do for me but with no luck at all I have curly hair and it is the same sort of length as yours so it should work in theory, I wonder if you have a moment you could let me know what sort of products you use to get that look and what sort of cutting technique is needed .

Hi Pippa, I am sorry to say I have had my hair cut short again. I had been growing my hair for over 2 years. I am now the wrong side of 50 and even though my hair is always in good condition my husband said it was aging me quite a lot. My husband bought me Kris Kardasians autobiography and there was a great photo of her with a lovely short hair style. I thought about it for a couple of weeks and then took the plunge. I must say I love it is almost just wash and go very little styling is needed I also want for a reddy colour and I feel much better for it. We were in Gatwick airport and on our way to security check, when a man directed us to the vip area. My husband was quite amused by it and said he thought it was because I looked so smart bless him. I think you always look so well turned out and your hair looks fab so I hope you keep growing it. Best Wishes Lyn

Dear Jenny, thanks for your comments ….Adam Reed at Percy and Reed cuts it and to be honest I have no idea about techniques but I do have layers throughout. Productwise though I couldn’t do it without the volumising powder from HER (John Barrowman’s range) and Percy and Reed hairspray, oh and Richard Ward’s energiser spray. Good luck!! X
