A photoshoot, and a midlife crisis!

I’ve done something a little bit ‘midlife crisis-y’ this week – I’ve had a second piercing in my left ear. I really have no idea why, but I suddenly decided I wanted to get a tattoo or a new piercing – definitely midlife crisis material, right?! After thinking very carefully about a tattoo, I decided against it, but I’m thrilled with my piercing. It’s just a tiny sparkly stud, and I have to leave it in for two months now, plus clean the area twice a day with natural sea salt and boiled water – I’d forgotten what a palava it is, I think it must be 35 years since I had my original ear piercing done! Worth it though. So now I want to hear about your midlife crisis activities, if you’ve had any? Can’t be just me…!

Fashion month continues on QVC and I’ve had fun taking part in a little photo shoot to showcase some of the new autumn fashion lines. I’ll have a few more to show you next week but for now here are three of my picks for the new season.

First, two pieces from Helene Berman. I totally fell in love with this drape coat, which has metallic thread running through the weave giving it a wonderful sparkle, so definitely one for the festive season!
And I also love a bomber jacket, so was thrilled to see this navy and gold one. It’s in a metallic jacquard fabric and will definitely brighten up autumn.

Finally if you love knitwear, look at this fabulous longline jacket/cardigan (jardigan? cacket?) by MarlaWynne.

Mine is the black multi (it also comes in a latte option). I love the geometric pattern and it is SO soft and cosy!

That’s it for now, see you next week!

Made me laugh! I, too, am 51 and have written in the past of my envy of your choppy hairdo which took a decade off you…and I, too, have been thinking about a tattoo! Only tiny, the number 134 on the inside of my thumb. Why? I started losing weight at 215lb and my (nearly there) goal is 134…so I figured having it in my eyeline at all times might help. Why not? I’m a scaredy cat! I didn’t go for a second earring but did get my first pair of diamonique ear climbers recently for the same slightly rebellious reason! Maybe there’s a list of such things which all women work their way through when they hit 50…either that, or we’re just weirdly in synch! Best wishes, SheMag

      Hi Shemag
Great to hear from you again! I LOVE the idea of that tattoo! We definitely are in synch, how funny. I have no idea why I wanted to do something like this but I’m very happy with my new earring. Keep in touch and let me know if you get the tattoo further down the line…!

Hi Jackie, you look gorgeous in the photos… 🙂 When I turned 50 a couple of years ago I had a tattoo done on my lower arm lol…. I was never a particular fan of them even, but decided I wanted one… I don’t regret it at all… I’m going to NY for the first time next month…I think I may get another one done to mark the occasion 😉 x x x

Awww thanks Alison! Like you I’ve never been a tattoo fan so not sure why I suddenly wanted one! I might get one in future – watch this space. I’m glad you’re happy with yours. Enjoy NY, it’s my favourite city in the world! And yes, go on, get another one…!

It must be an age thing, I am about to get another piercing in both ears and another cartilage piercing plus a tattoo of a feather in grey on my forearm and (eventually) another two piercings around my navel so i have four. Also learning to drum after having given up dance and piano years ago. Is it the 45 mark passing that does it? I suddenly realised i had become boring and hate it 🙂

      Hi Louise,
Oh wow all that sounds fabulous! I have no idea why we suddenly get these urges but it’s kind of fun! And age is definitely just a number. We will never grow old in our heads, eh? Keep drumming…!

Hi Jackie, I don’t think getting a second piercing is midlife-crisis-y at all! Mismatched earrings are all the rage right now (QVC take note) and it looks very cool. I had my third piercing in my left ear last year and love it!

Yes you’re right! I’m looking forward to being able to wear three earrings at a time and mixing it up. Might even get another one…!

I had a tattoo in my early fifties, wanted one that had meaning for me so decided on a small rosebud on my shoulder, many people don’t even know I’ve got it ?I’m thinking of having a second one now I’m in my early sixties not sure that still counts as midlife?!

That sounds lovely Theresa! I still might get one…somewhere it won’t be seen on telly though! Go for it, let me know if you get a second one!

Hi Jackie, I bought the Helene Berman metallic gold and navy jacket and her animal print grey/silver jacket, I really love both!! I also went for two Onjenu dresses and another jumpsuit. I am not very confident in terms of fashion however really want to start feeling better about things. The pictures look great. Best wishes x

      Hi Kate
That’s great, so pleased you like them! I think fashion confidence is all about trying new styles and pushing yourself a bit out of your comfort zone so it’s brilliant that you’re doing that…hopefully that confidence will come with the new clothes!

Nothing wrong with another piercing Jackie 😀 I love the bomber jacket. My mid life crisis came in the shape of a rather noisy guitar which I bought on impulse and learned to play. I then thrashed out my mid life crisis on stage as part of a Black Sabbath cover band. I think I’m through it now, I don’t even play anymore haha

      Hi Debbie,
How FABULOUS! I’d love to learn the saxophone but I’m not sure my neighbours would appreciate it… might have to move to the middle of nowhere first! That’s awesome though…you should definitely keep playing!

I had a midlife crisis when I was about 38 , I just had my gallbladder out and they did keyhole surgery through my belly button +2 other areas , and although I was quite a large girl, I have quite a nice bellybutton ! So when is it had all healed up I decided to have my belly button pierced and I absolutely love it ! Have since lost about six stone but don’t show it off , but I know it’s there . Haven’t got such a large collection of belly button jewellery as I have earrings , so just after my mum died two years ago and having one hole in my left ear and two in my right I thought sod it , hear comes another midlife crisis, and I pierced my own ear!! So 3 in right ear now, which means I can get away with swearing a lot of my wonderful QVC earrings at the same time !! Lots of ice and lots of process Prosecco helped, but I cleaned it regularly and it healed beautifully . I am 54 now and thinking about a tattoo! Hey , you’re only young once , and apart from being disabled with two hip replacements which went wrong and osteoarthritis of the back, I try and keep young and smiling . I have done the mad hair colour thing too , so thinking about having my long highlighted blonde hair coloured underneath , and when I get bored with that I will have one of those funky under cuts so you can see the nape of your neck when you have a ponytail or your hair is up as mine often is. Thank you for letting me boring you with my midlife crises. Oh I nearly forgot my next car when I need one in a couple of years will be lovely mini cooper Countryman, can’t wait for that midlife crisis. Oh and of course a nice toyboy wouldn’t go amiss either!! Thanks for listening hope I didn’t boy your socks off too much xx

How absolutely wonderful! I love all that! Good for you. And I hope you get your car, and your toyboy!! Everyone should have a midlife crisis I think, such fun!
