On last week’s blog, I mentioned that I had treated myself to the Lulu Guinness weekend holdall in the Kooky Cat design, which was last week’s Big Deal on the Style Channel. Well, it was perfect timing in more ways than one. I ordered one of the last ones before it sold out last Friday and it arrived in time for my trip to Nottingham to host the Rotary International afternoon session of their annual conference tomorrow, entitled ‘Polio Nearly There’. I’ll be driving up there tonight, directly after Fashion on Friday with Julia on the Style channel – actually, I may grab a bite to eat first, as we won’t get to Nottingham much before 10 p.m. and I don’t like eating too close to bedtime.
More of that on next week’s blog, but it is one of the reasons I have been sorting through old photos, as I have to give a fifteen-minute talk at the start of the session and I thought it would be good to illustrate it with images from my childhood in Nottingham. I’ve been putting some of them on here and on my Instagram; at least you all know it’s true when I say I have naturally curly hair!! I wonder if it would still be that curly if I cut it short – not that I’m intending to any time soon. You are probably all ‘cute’ pictured out, but if you want to see more, leave a comment – there are plenty!
Looking at all those photos of me with my dark hair and olive skin tone, you would think that I have some Southern European heritage… maybe Spain, Italy, Greece perhaps? In fact, I’ve always been told that I have pure Romany Gypsy a few generations back, which would account for my green eyes and wild curly hair. Well, not according to my DNA results. You may recall that my children bought me an Ancestry DNA kit as a present on my 60th birthday and I finally got around to sending it off a few weeks ago – almost three years later. As you can see from the picture, there is no trace of Southern European: I’m 84% English, Welsh and North European (predominantly from the midlands which is about right as my dad was born in Birmingham and my mum in Stoke on Trent), 9% Irish and Scottish, and 7% Swedish! Me? Scandinavian? There’s a turn up for the books. One day I would love to do my family tree, but unfortunately I’m way too busy at the moment!
I actually mentioned my ‘Scandie’ roots on-air during the three hour Diamonique Spectacular yesterday with Alison O’Reilly. Did you also notice the Lola Rose jewellery boxes we had on set, where I was squirrelling away all the beautiful sparkly pieces? I am fortunate to have the small one, in the rainbow fluorite option which fits in beautifully with the colours of the Tiffany-style lamp I have in my bedroom. It’s a good size with just one large compartment and comes in Lapis, Malachite, Rhodonite and White Magnesite, as well as the one I have. If you need a bit more space for your jewellery and you want an organiser tray with dividers, there is a bigger version, which comes in Black Moonstone, Lapis, Malachite and White Magnesite. They are really nice quality and I love that Nikki has used photographic images of the stones she works with in her jewellery to create them.
So, I’m not in at QVC tomorrow because of the Rotary International event, but I will be back in on Sunday at 6 p.m. for the Style Revealed show on the Style Channel, where you get the first chance to see the Big Deal for the following week. Talking of which, have you seen this week’s Beauty Channel Big Deal? It’s from Elemis and is the Power of Peptide Collection, including the 1000 Flowers Mask, the eye cream and the new adaptive day cream, as well as my favourite from the range, the Night Recovery Cream-Oil serum. I use the serum every night under my Overnight Matrix cream and as well as great results on the skin, I love the smell. I’m so looking forward to seeing Keeley for our show together next Thursday at 3 p.m.
The day before that though, we have a TSV from SBC, which includes one of my favourite scents of theirs, Coconut and Plumeria, in the shower cream (currently in my downstairs shower room) and shimmering body lotion, and there is also the Refeshing Watermelon in the Skincare Gel and the 2-in-1 Shower Gel and Shampoo – I’ll be on with Adele in our Beauty Loves hour at 2 p.m.
Two things before I head in to QVC – thanks for your kind comments about my book cover for Little Girl Missing – much appreciated. And finally, I can’t finish without saying a MASSIVE congratulations to the four English football teams who make up the final line-up for the two major European tournaments! I’m not a supporter of either Liverpool or Tottenham, who will be battling it out in the Champions League, nor Arsenal or Chelsea, who will be challenging each other for the Europa Cup, but it is unprecedented to have all four teams in these finals from one country and it is OUR country, little old England. As a football fan, I’m hugely proud of all of them.
Have a great weekend, whatever you are up to,
