Perfect Timing!

10

On last week’s blog, I mentioned that I had treated myself to the Lulu Guinness weekend holdall in the Kooky Cat design, which was last week’s Big Deal on the Style Channel. Well, it was perfect timing in more ways than one. I ordered one of the last ones before it sold out last Friday and it arrived in time for my trip to Nottingham to host the Rotary International afternoon session of their annual conference tomorrow, entitled ‘Polio Nearly There’. I’ll be driving up there tonight, directly after Fashion on Friday with Julia on the Style channel – actually, I may grab a bite to eat first, as we won’t get to Nottingham much before 10 p.m. and I don’t like eating too close to bedtime.

More of that on next week’s blog, but it is one of the reasons I have been sorting through old photos, as I have to give a fifteen-minute talk at the start of the session and I thought it would be good to illustrate it with images from my childhood in Nottingham. I’ve been putting some of them on here and on my Instagram; at least you all know it’s true when I say I have naturally curly hair!! I wonder if it would still be that curly if I cut it short – not that I’m intending to any time soon. You are probably all ‘cute’ pictured out, but if you want to see more, leave a comment – there are plenty!

Looking at all those photos of me with my dark hair and olive skin tone, you would think that I have some Southern European heritage… maybe Spain, Italy, Greece perhaps? In fact, I’ve always been told that I have pure Romany Gypsy a few generations back, which would account for my green eyes and wild curly hair. Well, not according to my DNA results. You may recall that my children bought me an Ancestry DNA kit as a present on my 60th birthday and I finally got around to sending it off a few weeks ago – almost three years later. As you can see from the picture, there is no trace of Southern European: I’m 84% English, Welsh and North European (predominantly from the midlands which is about right as my dad was born in Birmingham and my mum in Stoke on Trent), 9% Irish and Scottish, and 7% Swedish! Me? Scandinavian? There’s a turn up for the books. One day I would love to do my family tree, but unfortunately I’m way too busy at the moment!

I actually mentioned my ‘Scandie’ roots on-air during the three hour Diamonique Spectacular yesterday with Alison O’Reilly. Did you also notice the Lola Rose jewellery boxes we had on set, where I was squirrelling away all the beautiful sparkly pieces? I am fortunate to have the small one, in the rainbow fluorite option which fits in beautifully with the colours of the Tiffany-style lamp I have in my bedroom. It’s a good size with just one large compartment and comes in Lapis, Malachite, Rhodonite and White Magnesite, as well as the one I have. If you need a bit more space for your jewellery and you want an organiser tray with dividers, there is a bigger version, which comes in Black Moonstone, Lapis, Malachite and White Magnesite. They are really nice quality and I love that Nikki has used photographic images of the stones she works with in her jewellery to create them.

So, I’m not in at QVC tomorrow because of the Rotary International event, but I will be back in on Sunday at 6 p.m. for the Style Revealed show on the Style Channel, where you get the first chance to see the Big Deal for the following week. Talking of which, have you seen this week’s Beauty Channel Big Deal? It’s from Elemis and is the Power of Peptide Collection, including the 1000 Flowers Mask, the eye cream and the new adaptive day cream, as well as my favourite from the range, the Night Recovery Cream-Oil serum. I use the serum every night under my Overnight Matrix cream and as well as great results on the skin, I love the smell. I’m so looking forward to seeing Keeley for our show together next Thursday at 3 p.m.

The day before that though, we have a TSV from SBC, which includes one of my favourite scents of theirs, Coconut and Plumeria, in the shower cream (currently in my downstairs shower room) and shimmering body lotion, and there is also the Refeshing Watermelon in the Skincare Gel and the 2-in-1 Shower Gel and Shampoo – I’ll be on with Adele in our Beauty Loves hour at 2 p.m.

Two things before I head in to QVC – thanks for your kind comments about my book cover for Little Girl Missing – much appreciated. And finally, I can’t finish without saying a MASSIVE congratulations to the four English football teams who make up the final line-up for the two major European tournaments! I’m not a supporter of either Liverpool or Tottenham, who will be battling it out in the Champions League, nor Arsenal or Chelsea, who will be challenging each other for the Europa Cup, but it is unprecedented to have all four teams in these finals from one country and it is OUR country, little old England. As a football fan, I’m hugely proud of all of them.

Have a great weekend, whatever you are up to,
Much love,
Julia xx

Agree Julia, I love my football and have been very excited listening to the great matches on the radio with the BBC sports ap on my iPad. It has truly been a marvellous week for English football. Even appreciated in North Wales!

      Hi Anne
Yet more exciting football this week with the Leeds v Derby play off game – great for the neutral but not if you’re a fan of the losing team.
Looking forward to the European finals and of course the England games

All good with the family, thanks. I’m off sick from work at the moment, but on the mend.

Hi Julia, I was at the Rotary event yesterday afternoon and it was a pleasure to have you presenting the Polio Almost There event and hearing your Polio story. I’ve watched you on QVC almost since the beginning, sorry I didn’t have the chance to say hello at the end as I was involved in something else. Thank you for giving up your time to support our last push to end this awful disease. #purple4polio.

      Hi Anne,
What a shame you didn’t have time to stay afterwards. It was a privilege to be asked to host the afternoon session and we had some really good feedback.
We are so close to a polio free world – a world where children are not condemned to a life of disability for the want of a vaccination. The commitment from Rotary International is so appreciated.

    Hi Julia,
Yes well done to all football teams, and Man City especially. ( I’m not a MC fan by the way. ) but all teams have worked hard to get where they are. Pompey, well we are in the play offs and unfortunatley we didn’t win the first match with Sunderland but we have to win at home this thursday to stand any chance of going up to the Championships. We did win the Checkatrade Trophy though which i mentioned on your blog a couple of weeks ago. Now The Durrells, Victoria and Football have finished for a while what are we going to do…I loved the Durrells and i even mentioned to Ian about going to Corfu one day to see where they filmed the series. !
Think i mentioned about going somewhere special to renew our vows on our 10th anniversary in a few years time, well we have booked a holiday to Mauritus next year, we are staying at a hotel in Balaclava, all the reviews are good so the only way to is to visit and find out for ourselves. We have also been invited to a wedding in Santorini, next year but whether we will go i don’t know .
I found your DNA results above very interesting, are all Scandinavians pale skinned though. ! You are quite pale when you havn’t been in the sun, so who knows. Its in there somewhere. Both my parents had Golden skin tones, my mums mother was actually Dutch/ Belguim, so all though i’m medium skin toned i tan easily and i go dark golden colour, in fact on holiday i have been mistaken to being German. ! Anyway i have sent for a DNA test as i’m quite fasinated. Will let you know the results after i have done it and recieved it back. I’m really intriged by it all.. Hope your charity event went well, it all helps doesn’t it.
    Enjoy the sunny weather.

      Hi Kathy
I’m glad I’ve inspired you to look in to your ancestry – I’m thinking of getting Chris a kit for Father’s Day and then our children will have a complete picture of their heritage.
The Balaclava area of Mauritius is where we are getting married – it’s a nice part of the island, although it’s all pretty gorgeous to be honest.
I’m with you on The Durrell – a real feel good series set against a beautiful backdrop.
Sorry Pompey didn’t make the play off final – next year maybe
      Love

    Hi Julia
Hope you’ve received my email and that everything went well with your appearance at the Rotary event. I did catch the end of your Garmin show and have to say I bought one the last time it was on, but yet to use it, things are more complicated with cars nowadays, far too many buttons and gadgets to distract you. I now see you can control things by twiddling you finger, what next, I dread to think! Much preferred my old Puma which was 15yrs old against the car I have now, not much to go wrong and easy to fix…simples!!

Love reading your blogs and have just got my order in for your new book in June, J G Roberts, the cover looks very sinister and the shoes remind me of the ones I wore when I was little, had to have a red pair. My Mum used to bring boxes of shoes home from the local shoe shop for me to try on and I fell in love with a red pair with white spots and a little grown up heel on, did I get them, no, I had to have a pair of Clarks sensible shoes. Such were the days when everyone knew everyone and Mum was trusted to take things home to try on, even the jewellers let her bring jewellery home…would never happen these days of course! Memories eh?

Poor Bailey is back on his immunotherapy for his allergies, which he now has new ones after the previous ones had cleared up following the therapy last year, hoping they will kick in soon, heartbreaking to see him constantly scratching and nibbling himself.

Not long now until your big day, it will soon be upon you as days seem to fly by now, lots to still organise no doubt, very exciting for you.

    Take care and speak soon.
    love Annette x

      Hi Annette
Yes, I did get your email – apologies I haven’t replied yet but it has been even more manic than usual with the Rotary International event, hitting the deadline for book 2 in the new series and then getting the lurgy – nose like a tap, sore throat and unable to string a sentence together without coughing!
Thanks for pre-ordering my new book – it’s different from the others so I hope you will enjoy it.
I had to wear Startrite bar shoes in preference to Clarks sandals as they gave my left leg more support – I quite liked them though.
Sorry to hear Bailey’s not good 😟
      Will email
      Love
      Julia x
