Pen pals

Isn't it funny how often we use the phrase 'It's a small world' but in truth it is, as an email from my friend reminded me yesterday. My friend works as a Contestant Researcher and Associate Producer for Talkback Thames and she is currently working on Family Fortunes. She emailed to say that they had just finished recording some 'celebrity' families, one of which was Carol Vorderman's family.

During the recording, Carol's older sister, Trixie, had approached my friend as she had heard that she used to appear on 'The Price is Right'. "Do you know Julia Roberts?" was the question, to which my friend replied, "Yes, she is one of my best friends." Trixie then went on to explain that, as a little girl, she was friends with my sister, Lynda, and that they had continued to write to each other down the years… we are talking a lot of years here, approaching fifty I would say!!!

Apparently she hadn't written recently and wanted me to pass on a message to my sister that she would be in touch soon. Obviously I've always known the connection but how funny that my friend became involved too.

It is also quite refreshing to hear that some people do still take pen to paper and write letters. I must confess I very rarely do, it's all emails and texts these days sadly, although I do enjoy a good natter on the phone. I wonder if you have or have ever had a 'pen pal' and how long you've been writing to each other?

Talking of Family Fortunes, you know the surveys they do where they ask a hundred people a question, on occasion I have been one of those people surveyed, as have the rest of my family! So if you see a really strange answer sometimes, it could have been me being obtuse!

This weekend is Fashion Weekend and, as well as the return of Butler & Wilson Fashion Jewellery for the first shows this year, and lovely Renee with her Attitudes range, we have two great TSVs. Tonight it's the Diane Gilman denim leggings and tomorrow night it's the ruffle cardigan that I was wearing on air on Wednesday from Antthony Designs. I haven't worked with Antthony before so I'm looking forward to it on Sunday, even though it means an early start for me as we are on at 11am.

Hope to see you there,  love Julia x

Thanks Julia – it really is a small world. We had a fabulous time at Family Fortunes and Denise was a real star. Hope all the family are well and happy. xx

    Hi Julia
Sorry I’ve not been around much lately. I got up one morning and had a very stiff neck and shoulders, followed by some other weird feelings and was told to rest. So it was hotwater bottles and trying to sit up straight, but bedtime was a real nightmare and very restless, although I did find a lavender candle as you suggested a while ago, it was a L’Occitane one from a gift box Chris had bought me…well, Chris is hooked on the smell, so much so that he went to the local L’Occitane store and bought 2 more! It didn’t help much with the sleep because of the pain, but the bedroom did smell lovely LOL!!
At least I had one piece of good news after my bone scan…no osteoporosis present, which I’m really pleased about and to carry on with the diet.
Well, I took a leaf out of your book and have not had any bread for nearly 3 weeks now and can certainly tell the differece, although have not ventured onto the scales yet LOL!
Pen pals…I used to have a pen pal from Fiji in the 80’s, he was introduced to me by my cousin who emigrated to Australia. It was always nice to receive a letter from him and I had this vision, as you do, him being very tall, tanned and dark hair coming from Fiji…he sent me a photo and all his family had dark hair and he was a redhead, which somewhat dispelled my vision a little bit. We contined writing to each other, then I moved area and we sort of drifted apart. Until one day I found his address and put pen to paper, but heard nothing, then asked my cousin who said he had moved area, hey ho! I’ve still got one letter from him, written on one of those, fold up air mail photo sheets from Fiji…I’ve often wondered what happened to him.

    Hello Trixie
How surprised am I that you read my blog!! I often work on a Saturday evening but last week I was on an earlier shift and had just plonked myself in front of the TV when the announcer said it was the Vorderman family on Family Fortunes! A panic phonecall ensued to make sure that Lynda wouldn’t miss you – as you know she doesn’t watch a great deal of TV.
So pleased to hear you enjoyed your experience and you are right, Denise really is a star.
A little traumatized this week as Sophie has just moved out – more of that in this weeks blog!!
Hope things are improving for you

    Hi Annette
I had a little chuckle at your pen pal story. I bet you were hoping for an invitation to visit ………. that would have been some experience.
Very pleased to hear that there was no sign of osteoporosis from your bone scan. Are you still struggling with your stiff neck and achy shoulders? I have been experiencing an achy neck this week but put it down to stress – maybe it is some kind of bug doing the rounds?
Sorry the lavender candles didn’t help much but at least Chris enjoyed them.
Marjolein is back – she is on tonight at 6pm with Relax Your Back and then the Aeropilates TSV tomorrow. I’m on an early slot again – 11am……….. maybe speak then?

    Hi Rosalind
The jeans with the zips are from Karen Millen but they don’t do that exact style anymore ….. I have had them about a year. I find the cut of their jeans is usually quite good for my shape, so if you are similar to me you might want to give them a try.

    Hi Julia
I did reply to your blog, honest! Enjoyed your morning show with Marjolein and did send a text message, but fear that there weren’t enough texts, or is it that tweets have taken over…a far quicker way of doing things, I guess. No doubt, you have now got hundreds of comments to get through on the old ipad as well as blogs.
I did purchase the head and neck support for the pilates machine and have been using it for the last couple of weeks. Although I was fine using the machine without, it has made such a difference.
Hope Sophie has settled into her new flat and wish her all the luck in her new job…sounds like she’s not too far away from you and will no doubt be home on a regular basis…for Mum’s cooking!

    Hi Annette
I’m not sure why they didn’t put your text message up – we still do run text ‘crawls’ but as you say we need a minimum of three really to run a crawl.
Who would have thought that I would get into ‘twitter’ but it is very quick and surprisingly easy even for a technophobe like me!
I don’t really reply to tweets much – only to people I know – there are just too many otherwise, but I do enjoy reading them all.
Glad to hear you are getting on well with the neck cushion – you did well to get it before it sold out!
Sophie has settled into her flat with her lovely flatmate. She is off to OZ for three weeks in the morning ( we will both be getting two hours sleep after being on the launch tonight ) and starts her new career path when she gets back …. exciting times.
She will always be welcome for a bit of home cooking – mind you I think her risotto is better than mine!
