Off for two weeks… but why?

Off for two weeks… But why?

Well if you watch me regularly, you will know why I am off for two weeks. I have just had my carpal tunnel operation done and my arm is in a sling for a fortnight!

Have you had yours done? What happened? If you are not squeamish pop across to my website blog and have a look at the photographs there of the hand, post-operation. Funniest thing was, and it can only happen to me, just as the doctor was about to begin the cut, the fire alarm sounded! It turned out it was not a drill! The nurse rushed in, frantically saying “I’m afraid you must leave the room!” To which my doctor said “not unless it’s a real emergency; I’m about to start the operation”. So she scurried away and returned a couple of minutes later when the alarm had stopped sounding, saying “it’s okay”. Only in Debbie world, eh?!

I hope when it gets better I will no longer have the buzzing in my fingers all the time and not have to wear a splint like I have had to the last three months. Meanwhile I am supposed to keep it vertical. Wish me luck. 🙂

Tuesday Roast

The day before the operation, I was happily able to create the most delicious roast dinner I think I have ever made. Even Wendy was impressed when she joined us late because her daughter was visiting, hence me making it for a change. Honey-glazed carrots and the fluffiest roast potatoes ever. Our guests Lizzy, Jason and Clare really appreciated how delicious it was. And it looks rather good too, don’t you think?

Happy birthday Mum!

Had a lovely time, visiting my mum on Saturday, for her birthday. She is such a laugh, for instance at a recent wedding, here she is with me and pal Alison, doing the whole three monkeys thing! Funny!

In 1981…

This week I posted on Facebook a tribute to my lovely dad Derek, who died 25 years ago this week. To read it, go here. The post features lots of other photographs including of my wedding day and when I was a baby. 🙂 By the way, don’t forget to’ like’ the page to see all future updates from me there. One of the photos took me back, to 1981 in fact, when we were both on the Generation Game. Guess who won?! I note the Generation Game is returning with Mel and Sue presenting it. Larry Grayson was my host and it was great fun – one of my most enjoyable memories of my lovely dad.

Family Fun

Another day, another birthday celebration – this time David, my sister’s partner. Ironically, mum’s partner is also called David. So is my brother. So is his son. And so is my uncle. If I ever get another man, God forbid he is called David. 🙂 Lol

Talented Niece

What do you think of my niece Lara’s award-winning poem? She is only 11! ‘Blithe as a countryman heading for a long lifespan?!!’ No wonder she won a prize for it at her school, the Royal Russell! It made her auntie very proud. 🙂 I’ve told her if she writes enough of them, I will help her self-publish a book of them as a little treat.

Facebook Funny

This one from my previous telly husband, Tony Blackburn. Ha ha! So bad it’s good.

Bare Borders

What do you think I should plant in these borders down the side of my house in Sheepwash? I had some good tips on Facebook this week but wonder what you think. And yes of course I will ask Richard Jackson, but want your opinion. Preferably something perennial, preferably something that grows flowers for a long time! Maybe something for the winter and something for the summer?

Bolshoi Ballet, Taming of the Shrew

Believe it or not, this is on at cinemas including the local one in Okehampton, this Sunday! Looking forward to it immensely, and am treating lovely pal Sheena, as a thank you for taking me to Exeter and back on the day of my operation. Will report back next week 🙂

Are you going to see it? Have you ever seen any ballet, opera, or theatre at the cinema?

Hi Debbie. Great blog, as always. Poor you and your hand. I do sympathise, having had three carpal tunnel operations myself. I had surgery on each hand in two consecutive years over twenty years ago. Unfortunately I had to have surgery on my right hand again three years ago as a result of cellulitis in my hand causing nerve damage. All my surgery was successful and made a huge difference to my hands. It is an inconvenience having to keep your hand upright all the time and wiggling your fingers to exercise them, not to mention not being able to do everything you would want to do. It is worthwhile in the end though to not have the pain, tingling and numbness associated with that condition. Good luck!
What a handsome man your lovely dad was, and sad that he should pass away at such a young age. There’s not a day go by when I don’t think about my lovely dad too, as I’m sure you do yours, who passed away almost twenty years ago.
I think wallflowers and/or hollyhocks would look nice outside your cottage, but I’m sure Richard Jackson will give you some great advice as to what to plant.
I hope all goes well with your hand and look forward to seeing you back on our screens soon.
    Liz x

    Hi Debbie
Hope you’re recovering well…just make sure you behave & take it easy!! I’ve had x3 carpal tunnels done( and no I don’t have 3 hands ha ha!)I had a re-do on one of them only because it was really bad / nerve damage in the first place. I found the op a massive success and the symptoms went away quickly which was great. Its quite a slow recovery as you can’t lift things and you will develop new skills with your other hand! Enjoy the rest as much as you can and allow yourself to be pampered!
I can feel some purchasing coming on this week at QVC especially looking forward to Elemis and Honora.
Well, be good and look after yourself ?

    Hi Debbie,
Glad the op went well. You’re very lucky to get that fancy sling! Don’t know anyone who got that! Did you have to try the injections before they gave you the op? Keep up the exercises when you are allowed x

Hi Debbie. I have had both hands done..not at the same time!! I have zero pain now and although the scar looks quite horrendous and bumpy mine have healed beautifully and are barely extension of the ‘life’ line. Take care and do not try to rush the healing process. Love Mary

Depends which way your garden is facing but if south facing what about a beautiful long bed of English lavender. Stunning, fragrant and loved by bees. Also very low maintenance

Hope your hand is getting better Debbie … I had that operation done on my right hand a few years ago after being in intense pain for quite some time – the splint just didn’t help in the end & I was getting Zero sleep (when pain & tingling was at its’ worst. : ( Be sure to massage the scar once you’ve had the stitches out (Bio Oil was recommended to me) as this really helps. My left hand started playing up not so long ago but my GP managed to find the right spot for the Cortisone injection & so far, so good… six months in and No Tingling!!
PS. I got one of each of the Elemis TSVs on pre-order on Wednesday afternoon & they were here with me in Lympstone, Nr Exmouth on Friday!! (Y) Keeping the Exotics for Special Occasions though…. the Nourishing set is my Weekly Pampering Wintertime Treat!! Take Care & See you back on air soon! xx

hello Debbie I hope you are feeling better now, I too had an operation for carpel tunnel syndrome in both my hands in 1985, I also had bunions removed on both my feet at the same time I thought that it would be better to get the lot done as I would only need one lot of anaesthetic and one stay in hospital it all went really well and I have had no further problems with either my feet or my hands so even though it was a bit awkward with my hands for a few days . it was certainly a job well done. take care and keep well.
