The New Year is a perfect opportunity to forgive past sins and bad habits in your beauty regime and start afresh with good habits.
The best way to improve your beauty regime is to address an area that you are not happy with or that you haven’t had a result with before, then identify a product that, if added into your routine, will give you the result you desire, that will then motivate you to use this product or technique to your daily regime.
My theme for beauty 2015 is definitely more than skin deep and I want you to take the 360 degree approach, which is how I would analyse you in a 1-2-1 consultation. This encompasses all aspects of the health of the skin cells and allows you to get, potentially, the best results.
So, what do I mean by this? Firstly, look at your skin, analyse what your key concerns are and make sure you have a skincare regime with ingredients and textures that perform for you but that will also easily fit into your lifestyle.
Nowadays with the modern day technology of ingredients, it is possible to get the formula that you want in the texture that you like i.e. you can now get anti-ageing in water-based textures such as SBC, in oil-based textures like our award winning Iris Aromessence, in balm-based textures like the award winning Iris Night Time Balm and the Elemis Cleansing Balm, as well as in lightweight emulsions such as the Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream, and rich indulgent anti-ageing moisturisers like the Gatineau Age Benefit Moisturiser.
Crucial at this time of year is exfoliation and a treatment mask, especially for a dry or ageing skin, and during these darker, duller months with less sunlight, skin turnover is at its lowest, so increase your frequency of use of exfoliators i.e. if you normally use them once or twice a week, step it up to 2 – 3 times a week. Or, if you don’t use them at all(!) – get started, it will give you a massive result.
Skincare health is governed at a cellular level. This is affected by health, diet and exercise so anything at this time of year that improves your diet and exercise regime, including just simple steps such as drinking more water or eating more fruit and veg will be beneficial to the look of your skin. A good quick-start program could be using the Organic Pharmacy 10 day detox tablets. Also, in this area in recent years, the technologies of supplementation have come to the fore as these are working on feeding the skin from the inside. This can be especially effective, for example, at the time of the menopause when a massive skin change can be seen and increased skin ageing steps up.
Supplementation might be Imedeen which is clinically proven, and has stood the test of time with its celebrity following, resulting in a more manageable and better looking ageing skin. If you are in a poor health state, obviously your doctor will be able to advise on supplementation, but this could be crucial to giving you the skin confidence that you are striving for.
The third way on this 360 degree approach is modern day science which has been used in the medical field for decades and is now available in the form of electrical machinery that has the ability to penetrate the cell wall in the skin and stimulate, for example, collagen production such as the Tria Laser. This can be especially effective on stubborn lines and pigmentation areas or if you do suffer from long-term aging due to previous sun damage. It goes deeper than your skincare so if you want to get more results, this is the way to go.
To finish with, some simple steps to help you achieve your skincare goals – leave your products out that you need to use, lined up in order with any cotton wool, tissues, headbands that you need, so that you have no excuse, even if time is tight.
If you do get tired or you are poorly, do your skincare regime twice a day but do it when you have the most energy. Don’t worry if it means doing your night time regime at 4pm and your morning regime at 9 or 10am. As long as it is done twice a day then you should see results.
A way of getting improvement (without spending any more money) would be following these simple steps for two weeks:
A: Go Continental – Every time you have a hot or alcoholic drink, accompany it with a glass of water
B: Any products that have a creamy, waxy or oily texture, massage for twice as long during the application technique to increase oxygen and natural nutrition levels to the skin
C: Give yourself a goal to work towards such as a birthday, special occasion, meeting up with family or a time when you know you want to look at your best and this will keep you motivated
On a personal level, my New Year’s resolutions should of course be, to de-clutter the house (I must get a skip!), to not keep every piece of outside packaging that I love the look of (no thanks to L’Occitaine!) to try and wear socks that match (this takes effort!) and to not be told by someone, part way through the day, that my top is on inside out (often after a late shift!!)
Happy New Year!
