My absolute favourite makeover was not because of the transformation, but because the work was most appreciated. It was for one of the viewers of the Tyra Banks show – a woman who had lived in one room of her mother's house with her two adolescent children since they were small kids, finally got her own apartment.
She was such a great mother in every way, but she had really suffered financially. She just wanted her kids to have their own rooms, and she finally was able to make that happen. I decorated their new apartment and they had little more than their clothes and a plastic bin/dresser that the whole family shared.
I'll never forget how she cried when she saw the smiles on her kids' faces when we revealed their bedrooms. Her room was gorgeous. But she was more excited for her children. Sometimes it's just a pretty bed that you can call your own that can change everything.
I'm inspired by just about everything and sometimes it can become a little crowded under my hat! I'm just finishing up N·HOME's spring/summer collection and I'm really into Indian embroideries, paisley patterns, family monograms on antique french bed linens and Victorian calligraphy primers.
The drawing room of Queen Victoria's Osborne House on the Isle of Wight is beautiful as the upholstery is this amazing shade of green, and Alexander McQueen's recent show at the Met, 'Savage Beauty', is inspiring. Then the reality TV show "The Real Housewives of Atlanta" is like watching a very messy, slow motion car wreck…it's riveting, and I find myself singing Lady Gaga's 'Born This Way' over and over again, like a hardwired loop playing in my head!
In a nutshell, music, art, fashion, and lowest common denominator reality TV prime my imagination. Baby, I was born this way!
Look at my answers to the above questions - it's a unique perspective for a line of home accessories! I take different expressions of beauty and design and I process them through my aesthetic filter and out come the products of N·HOME.
I have a very unorthodox approach to design and I'd like to think that the breadth of my influences and references makes it very appealing to all kinds of people.
A parent is proud of all of his offspring! However, the Sonja collection of bedding, which is the coral and grey set that I named after my mom, has a special place of honour in my debut collection.
This is a complete fantasy, but since I'm dreaming I might as well dream big, right? I would love to collaborate with Prince William and his lovely bride, the Duchess of Cambridge.
My favorite clients are those who are stylish, youthful in age or worldview, with a budget or without, that want their home to really reflect their personalities instead of that of their designer. Wills and Kate would be great clients for N·HOME, as they young newlyweds that want to express their individual taste; posh, but not overdone.
