One thing that can be said for my life is that it is never boring!! I love to try new things and last weekend was no exception, going to my first ever American football game in America. I had been to one previous game at Wembley, probably about twenty-five years ago, courtesy of the Kicker for the London Monarchs who had appeared as a guest on my cable TV chat show. His name is Phil Alexander, and the funny thing is, he has held various roles at Crystal Palace (my team) since he retired from American football – small world!
We arrived in New York last Friday in record low temperatures for November, but it had warmed up a bit by the following morning when we visited the USS Intrepid, as recommended by Jackie Kabler. What an interesting morning! We saw the space shuttle ‘Enterprise’ which was the original one that they did all the testing with, although it never actually went into space. We also went on the USS Growler submarine. They issue a warning beforehand not to go on it if you are claustrophobic and I can understand why, as the ceilings are quite low and the working and living conditions very cramped. Each mission was around seventy days and it is hard to imagine be so cooped up for such long periods of time.
Saturday evening, we went to see Waitress, as recommended by Jill Franks and I loved it! Great music and vocals, plenty of humour (some of it a little slapstick) and a decent storyline. I would definitely recommend it if you’re going to New York or wait until it opens in London in February. It was the final performance from one of the main stars, which made it extra special – I wonder if she’s coming to London?
Sunday was the big one; we headed out to the Metlife stadium on the bus to watch the NY Jets host the New England Patriots. I’m not going to pretend I understand the game completely but it was an entertaining afternoon and we got to see veteran Tom Brady play – he is 41! There was a real party atmosphere, both in the arena and outside in the car park, where the fans who had driven to the game set up tail gate parties. I kid you not, they had full-sized barbecues and tables and chairs and were playing ball games. I can’t imagine Crystal Palace allowing that in their car park.
Having fretted about the weather and how cold it would be, it turned out to be a gloriously sunny day. We didn’t even need our coats on until half-time.
We had great seats on row 5, directly behind the goal, which was thanks to Cate Bandel (Nina Leonard fashion)’s son, Ben. He is actually a Jets fan, so was understandably a little disappointed when we met for dinner later as the Patriots, the team we were supporting, won.
The weather let us down on Monday, as it rained from around midday, making the open top bus tour a bit of a squelchy affair.
So, I took holiday for my trip last weekend, which means I’m also not working this weekend. It’s a shame, as this Sunday is Beauty Day. There are some amazing offers on the day, including a Gale Hayman Lip Lift duo in special animal print packaging – it was fun flashing that around in New York, especially on the Friday when the temperatures were so cold.
There will be whole hours from some of our biggest brands: Elemis, Decleor, Tarte, Percy & Reed and Margaret Dabbs to name a few, but the star of the day is the Molton Brown TSV. It’s available in two options, Fresh or Floral, and I’ve ordered the Fresh option, as it’s on our website already. There are two Bath & Shower Gels, a Handwash and Hand Cream (check our website for a more detailed description) and as you would expect, it’s a really good price.
You may have noticed the watch and tennis bracelet I have been wearing on air since I’ve been back. It is the Diamonique TSV on Monday and would make a fab Christmas present.
Also, on Monday, watch out for a new range of Italian delicacies – Tutto Bono. If you love panettone and biscotti, this is the range for you. Some biscotti are very hard on the teeth, but these have a more cake-like texture and are very yummy.
And while on the subject of food, my Culinary Concepts octopus bowl finally arrived… I LOVE it!!
Just before I finish, a quick heads up if you’re not a fan of any of the fragrances in the Molton Brown TSV: there is a gift-boxed L’Occitane TSV coming up on Thursday with everything in the rose fragrance. Shea Butter Handcream, Bath & Shower Gel, Body Lotion and a boxed Fragrance – I’ll be with Alexis at 1pm for a whole hour.
Have a fabulous weekend – I wonder if you will be putting the Christmas decorations up?
