My holiday to Crete

Ali and JoKali mera! Giasou! It's all Greek to me! 🙂 So sorry not to have written to you sooner, but the old t'internet has been playing up, and I've only just managed to fix it!

Wouldn't have had any photos to show you otherwise, and that would have been a shame :) Great to hear from so many of you as always, and good to know that you also enjoyed beautiful weather while I was away with Jo in Crete!

Having never visited Crete before, I have to say it is the first Greek island I have ever been to that has sandy beaches, and the most incredible sea!! It was as warm as bathwater, and we had a ball, splashing about like children in the waves, and laughing like fools when knocked over by the force of them.

CreteThe 'watchers on the shore' saw more than they bargained for on many occasions as our somewhat skimpy bikinis were almost washed away, but oh, it was fun 🙂

Our hotel was positioned almost right on the sea, and had fabulous terraces where you could sit and watch the waves. We arrived in time for lunch on the Friday, and then spent the rest of the day either in the sea, on the sunbeds, or at the bar!

The evening passed in a very pleasant Ouzo filled way, most of which I don't remember (ooops!) but as the sunshine spilled into the room on Saturday morning, we headed off once again for the beach.

Ali on holiday in CreteIn truth this pattern was repeated for the remaining three days, and was all we wanted to do, so unlike my previous blogs, I can't tell you anything much about Crete itself, other than it's beautiful but very windy and I'd definitely go there again! 🙂

I think the best day though was our last, when the weather let us down and was incredibly cloudy, but being British we braved the greyness and spent the entire day rolling around in hysterics while reading a very funny and outrageous book…

It didn't take long for a space to clear around us, but we blamed it on the weather… The fact that people were pointing and whispering at dinner that night didn't bother us either, but we were a tad disappointed when boarding the plane, to leave Crete in blinding sunshine and clear skies! That said, both of us got incredibly brown anyway, and felt truly rested (if not a little hungover!) on our way home.

Ethan's cakeI was at work the following day, but not on air, and then spent Friday making this cake for a very special little boy – Ethan.

As you know, I was divorced many years ago, and sadly lost contact with my step children, but my stepdaughter Becky got in touch with me recently, and we have seen each other several times since then.

She invited me, along with Lucy, Sam and Jack, to her son's naming ceremony on Saturday, and it was lovely to spend time with her, her husband Mark, and of course the little man himself, who is an absolute sweetheart…

Ethan in pushchairAs I type this, I can see the autumn leaves falling from the trees, and I am reminded that in two weeks today, I'll be on the catwalk at The Grosvenor House Hotel! EEEEK! I am meeting up with all the other models next Wednesday for a fitting day, and then we get one rehearsal on the morning itself before being let loose on the public at lunchtime!!

I know QVC are running a competition and three lucky winners will be coming to the event, so I shall look forward to meeting up with them after the afternoon show 🙂

For those who aren't able to make it, I hope you won't mind me asking a huge favour… I'm adding my JustGiving link to this page in the hope that you could possible donate a small sum to Breast Cancer Care.

At Ethan's naming ceremonyI know I set my target rather high, but it would be marvellous if I could get past the 50% mark in time for the 3rd October.

I appreciate that many of you have already given, but if you haven't yet, it would make such a difference to all those of us who have a need for the incredible support system BCC provide.

THANK YOU!! 🙂 I hope you like the photos, and I look forward as always to hearing how your week has been.

With my love, Ali xx

Hello Ali, Lovely photos and stunning tan. I saw the Kitchenaid show and thought you looked fabulous and you’ll still look golden for The Fashion Show. It’s always difficult to leave blue skies and sunshine and even though September has had some lovely early Autumn days it’s not the same as being somewhere where it still feels like Summer. I can’t moan about my lot because school has allowed me to work four days a week – I get Fridays off! I have always loved Fridays and a few years ago I found out that I have synesthesia which a sort of cross-wiring of the brain so I see days, numbers, places and other things as colours and Fridays have always been pink! It has been a gift to have the luxury of being free at the end of the week AND having a three day weekend. This was particularly welcome last week as it was our anniversary on Saturday and Ellie’s birthday two days later. The cake made in the Kitchenaid was lush – I love that machine and owning one makes me feel like a grown up cook. To continue the baking theme your cake looks very professional so if there is ever another celebrity Great British Bake Off could you be a contestant? Ethan looks gorgeous; I can remember you talking about Rebecca some years ago and how nice that you’re back in touch. Enjoy the preparations for being a model, you’ll be amazing. Love from Jo x

Hi Ali, Been waiting for your blog to see how you found Crete as we have never been, it sounds as if it’s great, I laughed at your antics with your bikini’s, am afraid it takes me a lot to even get into a dark one piece. It’s worth remembering that last year you wouldn’t have been at Crete, never mind wearing your skimpy, that’s why it’s great that in a fortnights time you’ll celebrate with strutting your stuff on the catwalk. Glad you were reunited with Beth and her gorgeous little boy Ethan and what a great cake, well done, I make my grandchildren’s birthday cakes, they seem to get more intricate as they get older. Everything going well here Harold is walking more each day, his right leg is still giving him problems but it’s early days yet and at least he doesn’t have that awful pain We go to see his surgeon on Monday, and when we get the ok we may look to booking time away, although it’s getting a bit late now to get the sun unless we go further a field. Sitting watching QVC last night and all of a sudden all the lights and power went, why is it that when something like that happens you forget where the matches are to light the candles, thank goodness for mobile phones as all the phones wouldn’t work, we got someone out and it took him no time at all to bring light to our life. I have to say it looked quite pretty all the candles flickering, but glad when I could make my nightime drink, have a good couple of weeks Ali and don’t worry about the fashion show you’ll ” knock em dead” Much love Norma xx

Good evening Ali..I know an evening blog is very unusual for me but grabbing the chance while I can. Saw you on TV this week and how brown are you.. I am well jel! Even my Gatinauex tan accelerator and moisturiser is struggling to keep my skin brown but you look fabulous. I am so glad you behaved like children, giggled and drank too much, that’s what holidays are for and I am sure you’re batteries are re-charged. I know the cat walk must seem daunting but you have overcome so much Alison, use the stregnth from that and walk tall and proud..Go girl and strut your stuff. I have entered the competition but I enter every QVC comp and like so many others never win but I have everything crossed. Been a funny week..not much excitement in Westgate but on a totally different and more bizarre topic my toe nail is still in tact..I dont think I enriched your life with the tails of my toenaail?! Three weeks ago I dropped a wrought iron door stop on my newly pedicured big toe whilst cooking bacon for breakfast…I was very good and didn’t swear as the kids were in the kitchen but hopped around in major pain covering the floor with blood and screeching like an opera singer…I was trying to mop up etc and the kids..who don’t do blood..scarpered but only after bringing me in the bucket from the garden as I screamed that I was going to be sick!! Anyway to cut a long and painful story short my toenail had virtually split open from top to bottom, ironically along the line of my nail art considerate! I kept the polish on for as long as I could as nail polish remover would have stung and just looking at the polish remover made my eyes water but, finally after two weeks, carefully removed the polish and stuck my toenail together with OPI nail emergency repair fibre glass…Fantastic stuff and toenail still on toe and in tact and polished in Nails Inc Baker Street!!! Great pictures by the way..have a good week, Love Mary xx

Hi there Susan, and thanks so much for your post. Yes, Ethan is an absolute delight, and a credit to Becky and Mark who do a wonderful job between them. For me, it was particularly special to have all of my children and Beck together – it’s been too many years – and they all are brilliant with Ethan! Glad you like the pics of Jo and I, and yes she is stunning – hard to believe we’re the same age really! I will be giving you all the details of my fitting day next Wednesday before The Show itself, and I’m glad you’ll be watching when we screen it on the 16th. Lots of love, ali xx

Babs, a tonic is exactly what it is. Jo hadn’t had a holiday for three years, and she’d been through some tough times, including losing her dad, so it was wonderful to have some time to just be…and behave like children!! She is a wonderful friend, and has been very supportive of me over the last year or more, as have so many of you! I have to admit to being pleased with the way Ethan’s cake turned out – I am now officially Nanny Ali! Makes me warm just thinking about it 🙂 I think I’ll feel less nervous about the Grosvenor Night once I’ve done the fitting next Wednesday – will fill you in on the details! Lots of love, Ali xx

Julie, you’re doing really well, and I know how hard it’s been… Just keep on keeping on and you’ll get there 🙂 The book Jo and I were reading is VERY rude (Profanosauras Rex) from the old VIZ comics…. but it does make us laugh 🙂 Yes and you’re right about Rebecca – lovely name, lovely girl 😀 Keep in touch, and stay strong, love Ali xx

Jo, bless you! I have to say it’s the best tan I’ve achieved with the least effort! The sea breeze kept us cool, and so I didn’t ever feel too hot – wonderful for the flushes too! I am very glad that you have been given a four day week, and was intruiged to read about your synesthesia! Not something I’ve ever heard of before, but am hoping that if Friday’s are PINK days, it would be similar to looking through rose coloured glasses?! 🙂 Happy Anniversary to you and your man, and happy birthday to Ellie. Great to hear about your Kitchenaid… I am fast realising that I need to buy one for the new house, and crack on with more baking/cooking generally. Fitting for The Show on Wednesday next week, so will take some behind the scenes shots and keep in touch. Love to you and yours,

Norma, I’m sure you’d look great in a one piece – dark or not! And you are soooo right – Jo and I did a fair bit of ‘looking back’….this time last year I think I was at my all time low, feeling particularly ropey… Hard to believe just 12 months on, and so much has improved. Delighted to hear that Harold is walking more each day, and I hope that the problems he has with his right leg will improve. What kind of cakes do you make for your grandchildren? I am sure they truly appreciate them, and it’s lovely to hand them over isn’t it? 🙂 Well, you take care and have a good weekend, and do keep in touch. With love,

Mary I nearly had to reach for a bucket myself – that sounds sooooo painful! You poor thing! Bloomin’ annoying too though especially as you’d just had a pedicure! I have to say I’m impressed with the OPI Emergency Fibreglass nail repair kit – I will use your story on air next time I sell it 🙂 I am keeping EVERYTHING crossed that you win the ticket and we may at last get the chance to meet at The Fashion Show – wouldn’t that be great…. in truth it would be terrific if ALL of Ali’s Army were there – without you all, I don’t think I’d have ever even accepted the challenge to get up on the catwalk in the first place! 🙂 Love to you and your children (mine don’t do blood either, although Lucy was great with me when I had food poisoning!) My Dear Ali, thank you for asking after me it brought tear to my eye, when you have so much going on yourself. I have good news I saw the skin specialist and the oncologist on Tuesday, she was a 100% certain that the mole was nothing to worry about, and didn’t want to remove it for the sake of it as it is so close to my scar where I had some lymph nodes removed. Before I change medication my oncologist wants me to see an endocrinologist, so that is in the pipeline. I am nursing a stinking cold at the moment, so just having a duvet day today!!,
Nanny Ali that has a lovely ring to it, and what a beautiful little boy and the cake looks fab.
So glad you had a relaxing holiday with Jo,just what the doctor ordered! You look so healthy and brown, ready for BCC catwalk, I look forward to seeing you and know you will look gorgeous.
Hope Sam is settling in now he is back in the UK and your house move is still on track. Exciting times for you Ali and well deserved. I think I will go and pour myself a lemsip and get back under the duvet!
Take good care Ali Love Janet xx

    Dear Ali
    Awww – Ethan’s a little star!
I know what it’s like when rifts happen in families. I’ve been forced to be the go-between between my Aunt and my younger brother’s children for ages now. And it was almost intolerable when my brother’s first daughter was Stillborn. My Aunt was left isolated and grieving, and I was having pressure put on me from both ends. In the end, the children will be the losers – although I don’t want her judgemental attitude to affect them the way it has my brother. I’m glad you and Becky have re-established contact.
And now you’ve broached the subject of your divorce, I’ll tell you a funny story I’ve been keeping hold of since I started relying to you on ths blog. Several years ago, I did a week of work experience at BBC Three Counties Radio. They operate a “hot desk” system, and so I opted to use this one desk. Anyway, as I was beavering away on a news story for the drivetime show, a shadow came over me, followed by a familiar Irish voice. You guessed it!
Blushes and profuse apologies were issuing forth from me as I scuttled to another desk.
Glad you enjoyed your holiday – and a certain book!

    Hi Ali,
Glad you had a great holiday. I’ve never been to Crete, but have visited Corfu, but must admit it was 31 years ago (how frightening, it only seems like yesterday), but I suppose it has changed so much since then. I remember how lovely the people were and how much they loved children – they made such a fuss of mine who were 5yrs and 1yr old then – very happy days! Crete is definitely on my wish list of places to visit, and your photos have made it even more appealing. I’m glad your friend enjoyed it too, but so sorry to hear about her dad, I know exactly how she feels. I’m sure the holiday has done her the world of good, and she must have been so glad to have had the opportunity to go away with you.
The picture of little Ethan is so cute – he’s so gorgeous!
Good luck for next Wednesday, and have lots of fun. You look so radiant and your hair looks so lovely Ali, really lovely! I saw you presenting the Centigrade hour, and loved the cream jacket on you. I have three jackets from Centigrade and love them all, as I really like the extra style features they have.
    Take care Ali,
    Love from Sue Radford xx
Best wishes to everyone in Ali’s army too!!

Dear Janet – PHEW! Such a relief to hear from you, and to hear that all is well and the mole is nothing to worry about. I hope too that your cold gets better soon – poor Simon and Miceal have been struggling, and Kathy was far from well when I saw her today, so there must be ‘something in the air’! You stay under that duvet until you feel completely better eh? 🙂 So glad you liked the photos and yes Ethan is gorgeous – such a happy little soul, and Beck is a natural mother along with her lovely husband Mark who is so good with Ethan too. Yes Jo and I did have a wonderful time – first holiday I had with her was when we were just 12 and had a school trip to Belgium, Holland and Germany…. I should write about that one day – we laughed pretty much throughout the five days then! 🙂 I have my fitting day for the Fashion Show tomorrow which is when I will meet the other models – I was having my mastectomy when they had their first meeting, but we have been in touch on Facebook, so I don’t feel too much like a stranger. May have to resort to fake tan to keep my colour for next week, and hope to have the result of my bone scan by Friday, so fingers crossed all good. Love to you Janet, and do let me know your cold has eased 🙂 Ali xx

Debbie – Thank You! What lovely things your write 🙂 Lucy chose the dress for me, and I was really chuffed to have my hair straightened on the night – it makes such a difference to have it done professionally, and it was lovely to work with Rosa from Yankee Candles too. I am looking forward to the fitting day for the Fashion Show, and then it’s only a week away!! Can’t believe that when it was first suggested to me I hadn’t even got any hair, and yet here we are a year down the line and so much has improved. Do keep in touch, and thank you again for making me smile today, so very much appreciated, love Ali xx

Crikey Chris I could almost feel the shadow behind ME when I read your message!!! I remember all that ‘hot seating’ at the BBC Radio Stations when I used to work there, but hope that you enjoyed your work experience during your time there…!! I am sorry that you too went through a tough time when your family were divided, and that your children, like mine, suffered because of it. That said, it’s lovely when things come full circle as they have now for me, and I intend to make the best of it 🙂 Lovely to hear from you, and do keep in touch. Love to all your family, Ali xx

Dear Sue, as always, lovely to hear from you, and I’m glad that you too have good memories of one of my favourite Greek islands – Corfu. Jo and I actually went there three years or so back, but I think we both preferred Crete 🙂 It’s been a pretty hard road for both of us in the interim, and she said to me on the plane coming home that it was the best holiday she’d had, which made me very happy 🙂 Thank you so much for all your lovely compliments about my hair, and also the wonderful Centigrade jackets. I really do love the range, and am in some strange way am quite looking forward to it being cold enough again for me to wear those wonderful padded jackets and faux Sherling coats again! I do hope all is good with you, and will make sure that I take plenty of photos at the fitting tomorrow for the Fashion Show. Sending you my love, Ali xx

Wrote a post but it seems to have vanished so trying again!
First of all, Janet – what great news for you about your skin. Must be a big relief and let’s hope things continue in a positive direction from here for you.
I had a few days in Venice last weekend with a lovley friend. We were blessed with lovely weather and did so much walking and sightseeing we were ready for bed before 9 each night!!! That’s especially unheard of for my friend who rarely goes to bed before midnight apparently. I’m a tough tour guide!! I’d been on day trips to Venice before so it was lovely to stay in a b&b that was near the Grand Canal, spotlessly clean and full of character. We had such a fun girlie trip and managed without either of us falling in a canal, so that was a result!!!
My back stood up to the flying and walking but has ached me the last few days since I got home – paying for it now but it was worth it. Lost another family member to cancer a couple of weeks ago – an elderly uncle but still sad. Then my partner has been somewhat under the weather again but think it’s down to the tablets he’s been given for his dodgy ankle. 2012 has not been the best….
I hope the fashion show goes brilliantly next week, Ali. I have entered 3 various competitions to try to win a ticket but no joy!! Never mind, I’ll be there in spirit and look forward to watching the highlights.
Right off to try and get this posted. Love to all in Ali’s army and strength to those struggling a bit in particular.

Dear Ali,Hope you have had your results and all is good. I have some lovely news my son and his girlfriend are expecting a baby in Feb next year. It came as a shock at first,(I am far to young to be a gran lol !!) I am so looking forward to having my first grand child. I meant to tell you while you were in Crete we went to Venice for 5 days. What a magical place, the gondola ride had to be one of the best bits of the trip. Like Liz we did so much sight seeing and walking, but it was so worth it, it’s a trip I will never forget, I’m not sure we could better it, but we will have a good time trying!
Liz relieved your scan results came back that you can manage on a couple of pain killers and there has been hardly any spread. Glad you to had a good time in Venice, any suggestions for the next city break?
Take care and I will speak to you soon Ali, love Janet xx

My dear Liz – you always sound so positive and full of beans – I’m not surprised you have a list of friends who love to spend time with you. Venice is such a fab place to visit – as dear Janet found out – I’m just sorry your back has been playing up… and that you lost yet another friend to this blessed disease…. Having spent Wednesday at the fitting for The Show, I met up with many of the other models – quite a number who have secondaries – and it just compounds how incredibly lucky I feel… but how sorry I am that it’s not the same for us all.. I do hope your partner is feeling better now, and I shall be thinking of you on Wednesday – all of you – as for me, you will be there in spirit and giving me the courage to walk the walk….!! Love to you Liz – keep on fighting – Ali xxx

Dear Janet, just found your second post – so sorry I didn’t get round to writing on Friday when I got my results, but yes all clear 🙂 Wonderful news re your grandchild! You’re never too young to be a grandma – it will be wonderful for you to have extend your family, and to include a child in that – happy days. So glad you enjoyed Venice – the gondola ride was the only thing we DIDN’T do when we took mum all those years ago! My suggestion to you for your next city break would be either Rome or Florence – both fabulous. So glad all is good with you, love me xxx

Janet : City break – Rome, Rome, Rome if it’s Italy. Much though I loved Venice and Florence, Rome remains my favourite. As far as other countries go, Vienna is wonderful especially towards Christmas time and Budapest. Never been to Prague but it’s on my hitlist!! It’s my birthday at the end of November and I want to arrange a city break to somewhere with a Christmas market and nice atmosphere for 3 or 4 nights. Mum will accompany me I’m sure…
As my Mum is away for a few days at the moment attending my uncle’s funeral, I am doing the keep an eye on Dad routine. He rang my this morning to say he’d been ill all night so I’m spending the day down at his house. He’s 81 so you can’t be too careful. Not sure if he’ll survive my nursemaid skills but am just leaving him to sleep – probably the safest thing to do.
My partner seems quite a lot better now, thank you. Think it was the very strong painkillers making him feel so rubbish. We went to Harrogate at the weekend to pick up a new little motorbike for him (no way I’ll go on it!) and I ended up ordering a brand new, hand-made mattress for my bed. I have to wait 6 weeks for it but they are made in Oxfordshire so I am helping the British economy as well as my back. Not a cheap item but well worth it and I will be hibernating in it if the winter weather is going to continue like it is at the moment here!!
Have a fab fashion show, Ali.
    Love to all, Liz x

    Hi Ali
Not been on for a while, but follow your blogs, which are brilliant!
Just wanted to say that both you and Amica looked beautiful and did a fantastic job on ‘This Morning’ modelling and loved the quick look back at your time spent as a presenter there.
Good Luck with the BCC Fashion show and sending Amica lots of positive thoughts and love with her upcoming therapy.

P.S. Here’s a thought for you to giggle at…I have seen a consultant for carpal tunnel and had tests last week. I have to wear some lovely blue wrist braces at night and to top it all I have been to the Dentist who is making a mouth guard for me, because I clench my teeth at night, by the time they’ve finished with me I’ll be going to bed looking like Mike Tyson…lets hope I don’t start boxing in my sleep LOL!!!
