This month Thompson & Morgan guest Michael Perry celebrates his 15th anniversary with the brand! We caught up with the expert to hear more about him and his role at Thompson & Morgan…
Tell us about the Thompson & Morgan brand and how it got started?
Thompson and Morgan is the UK's leading mail order plant company which having been started by seedsmen back in 1855, has been in business more than 150 years!
But we are a company with a difference; rather than just offering the same plants as garden centre and DIY stores, we select each plant for being unique in form and for the garden performance that it provides. That way, you know you'll have a plant which you can't find anywhere else which will deliver massive impact in your garden!
Share a bit about yourself and your role within the brand
My role is the New Product Development Manager – indeed Richard Jackson often calls me the "modern day plant hunter".
I'm always off travelling around Europe in search of new, different and unusual plants. The journey from being found to being sold can be extremely long for some products – in fact, our black hyacinth took nearly 20 years to develop and bring to customers!
What is your favourite plant pick from the collection (sold at QVC) this season and why?
This season I'm finding begonias a really useful plant, as they're really, really weatherproof…
Which horticultural themes are big this year and how can enthusiasts get their gardens on-trend?
I think people need to think bigger with their plants – especially when it comes to bedding and patio containers. I see too many gardens where the plants just sit neatly in the border, but are about a foot from each other and the bed often becomes quickly filled with weeds. Plant more robust varieties for better ground cover – they'll act as a natural weed beater too!!
