Lots happening in the next few months

There are a couple of fairly significant months coming up for me… the final months of my forties. I turn the big 5-0 in April, and I’m not really sure how I feel about it! I’ve talked before in a blog about how I always used to hate birthdays and even (as a woman in the still ageist world of TV) lie about my age, but how all that changed in 2010 when my younger sister Deborah died very suddenly at the age of 39. Something like that is life-changing, and made me realise how very precious life is and that we should be thrilled by every birthday, as it means we’ve managed to survive another year! So since then I have been grateful for every passing year, and consider getting older a privilege which is denied to many.

Headway T-shirtTuring fifty is a biggy to get your head round though, although I guess as there’s not much I can do about it, I’m just going to have to grab it with both hands and make the most of it! It’s definitely a year to consider health and fitness a little more closely, and although I do quite a lot of exercise I’m going to be upping my fitness levels significantly in the coming months because I’ve taken on a fairly crazy physical challenge. Last year it was the Moonwalk (a night-time power walking marathon through the streets of London), but this year myself and two pals are doing the South Coast Challenge.

PRAI 2 Piece Ageless Throat Device & Serum - 213078It’s described as a “sleep deprivation and endurance challenge” and is 100km  around the south coast of England – basically almost two and a half marathons non-stop, starting on a Saturday morning in August and going right through the day and night into the next day. My team mates are Natalie, who works in the QVC promotions department, and Danni, a former QVC producer.  It’s all for charity and we have all chosen our own – mine is Headway, the brain injury charity. My sister died from a brain aneurysm, but if she had survived she would probably have needed a lot of help from a charity like that, hence my choice. The t-shirt has arrived (see photo above!) so it must be real….eek!

I’ve also decided that in the run-up to my birthday I’m going to try out lots of new anti-ageing products and gadgets to try to stave off those wrinkles! First up is the Prai Ageless Throat Device – I’ll tell you how it went in my next blog.

Before I finish, did you catch my HairUWear show this week? My usual short style was transformed into a glam up-do with the addition of a short clip-on ponytail. I LOVED it! Maybe I should be more adventurous with my hair too, as my big birthday approaches…

I’d love to know how you’d deal with a big birthday – shout it from the rooftops, or ignore it?! Do get in touch – you can leave a comment below this blog or say hello on Twitter (@jackiekabler).

I will be 60 later this year and have devised a ‘bucket list’ of “60 Things To Do Before I Turn 60” which I’ve been steadily working my way through.

As I’d travelled virtually around the world by the time I was in my mid-30’s and had some wonderful adventures, it’s been difficult thinking of different ‘challenges’ to do but already on my list are: indoor parachuting (I’ve Debbie Flint to thank for this suggestion); starting my own blog (am writing it later today); going on a Food Photography workshop (in hand); holidaying on my own (booked for October); and lots more besides.

You’re right – one thing we take for granted is our health and, like you, I’ve been to so many funerals of people ‘taken’ so young (ie in their 30’s and early 40’s) that I figure Life is for Living NOW, and not waiting around ‘for the right time’ to do whatever it is you’ve always wanted to do. Go for it, Jackie – jump out of your comfort zone and start your fifties with an adventure!!!

    Lots of love.

      Hi Susanne,
I absolutely love that idea! Life is definitely for living…I hope you have a wonderful year and happy birthday in advance!

Age is just a number Jackie. Yes it may be higher than you would like but just think of all the experiences you have had in that time both happy and sad. Sad memories can help us see things differently as you say and if we can use this positively I believe it is a fantastic way to remember and respect loved ones. You have achieved so much Jackie. Shout it from the rooftops!! If it makes you feel any better, I thought you were in your mid thirties at most. Xx.

      Hi Mark,
Mid-thirties, that’s made my day! Yes you are so right, our life experiences are what make us the people we are. And we can’t change our age, so best make the most of it! Thanks for getting in touch.

Jackie you are a gem. That’s a super charity. People don’t realize how much we need brain injury charities. So sorry for your loss if your sister. You look stunning BTW. You never in a million years would ever think you were 50! Enjoy it!x

Jackie you look amazing in these pictures. You definitely don’t look 49 or even 50. You feel the age you are inside, take hold of life and live it to the full. Your I am sure your sister would have wanted you to do that. Good luck with your challenge my husband Charlie and I support the headway charity too. We do a annual classic bike run around somerset and Dorset every year.

    Have fun

    Love and best wishes

      Hi Amanda,
Very kind, thank you! If I was the age I feel inside I’d be about 25, but maybe it’s good to never truly grow up! The classic bike run sounds great, good for you! Thanks for getting in touch.

Hey Jackie, Don’t worry, I turned 50 in December 2015. Even though the number changes you don’t feel any different. The only thing I would say is that in the past 12 months I gave definitely aged so whether that is my age or just extra stress that I’ve had. You look amazing!! X

Jackie you are gorgeous more so with the new hair style love it!, you are also a breath off fresh air on QVC, I have rang once to say how I enjoyed your shows, will some times turn off but ilove to watch your shows, I am married so don’t worry. I remember you from the breakfast TV days. I have just turned 60 and apart from the old aches and pains I am still young at heart always got my make up on lippy and look after my skin. Thanks QVC. I like you lost my brother at the age off 44 with the same thing, devastating and will never get over it, but we have to carry on, we were blessed with a grand daughter two years ago and she keep me young, she is gorgeous she fills a big gap in our lives, I know you have no children, but you have a wonderful life a lovely hubby who takes you on lovely holidays all over the world, you look so well matched.
Jackie this is the first time I have left a message, but I enjoy your blogs so much so felt I had too, also to let you know about your hair. Take Care
    Kind Regards.

Hey Jackie…. how exciting! A birthday is always fun, but a BIG birthday is a perfect excuse for LOTS of fun! I turned 40 a few years ago and remember feeling really, really low about the prospect. But family and friends threw a superb weekend of surprise celebrations, planned by my amazing husband down to the last detail. It just made me realise how important I was to them and not the number on the card. Since then, a bit like you, for a number of reasons, I’ve been embracing those special days each year. I do worry about my health and fitness and have made efforts to improve both…. I want my kids to be proud of me. Wishing you all the very best for the next few months and have a wonderful day. Also, best of luck with your challenge…. it’s madness personified…. If look as amazing as you when I reach the next big birthday I’ll be delighted!! Marie x

      Hi Marie,
I didn’t really celebrate my 40th as I had a very close friend who was very ill, so yes, I am going to go for it this time! I’m sure your kids are already very proud of you, it sounds like you have a fabulous family and great friends. And yes, I must be mad to be contemplating 100km, but hey…! Fingers crossed, eeek. Thanks for getting in touch!

    Hi Jackie,
I was trying to find a way to message you to ask what brand and style of boots you are wearing today, I love them (furry with ties).
Then I read this blog and felt compelled to comment.
I was diagnosed 4 years ago with Pulmonary Fibrosis. I didn’t respond to drug treatment initially and thought I wouldn’t see my 50th. Fortunately things changed, and having spent the last few years in bed on oxygen 24/7 – I can only say bring on my 60s 70s and 80s!! I’m so lucky to still be here and able to walk again, as PF usually has a poor prognosis.
Age is just a number, what you do every day means so much more.
I’m looking forward to getting back out walking on the Scottish hills I love so much. However old I get 🙂
So, good luck with your amazing Marathon for a great charity and most definitely enjoy your 50th – and yes, absolutely, sing it from the rooftops!!!! And hilltops!! 🙂
    Best wishes,
    Deb xx

      Hi Debbie,
First, the boots were Clarks…I think we are into our summer stock now though so they may not be available, sorry!
Second, I’m so glad to hear you are beating your illness. It’s so true that we never know what is around the corner and need to make the most of every day. Walking on the Scottish hills sounds wonderful…I know there is another 100km challenge in Scotland so I may do that one day! Right, I’m off to climb onto the roof and start singing…

Hi Jackie. Firstly you look stunning. Secondly i turn 50 this year too on Saturday 26th March..Easter Saturday. I am an identical twin and we are having a party that night. That said all my friends cannot believe i am 50..i have no laughter lines or wrinkles thanks to QVC skincare and natures botox…i am a curvy lady and sadly lacking in height my skun is my asset. My mum had a brain tumour removed 13 years ago and has post meningeoma dimentia as a result of two horrendous ops and cyberknife radiotherapy. You are doing an anazing thing. Are you walking near Margate..its a mile from where i live i can cheer you on. Have you got a Just Giving page so i can sponser you?
You have blossomed on the Q but have fond memories of you on GMTV wading in mud!! Have a great birthday..i am so looking forward to mine. Mary xx

Thank you, and happy birthday in advance! How lovely to have a twin to share it with. The walk starts at Eastbourne and finishes at Arundel so sadly not near Margate. And yes there will be a JustGiving page soon, I will put a link to it in my blog, that’s so kind of you. Ah yes, those good old GMTV days, I practically lived in my waders at times! Thanks for getting in touch.

Age is something we cannot stop, even using all the lovely products from QVC. My motto is enjoy every moment, travel expands the mind, I’ve just been to India and Nepal. Go to concerts with young people, I learn so
Much from them. Try to keep fit and keep the mind active. Let’s see how this goes!. Have a great year

I totally agree with you, I always learn so much when I travel and I think as long as you never stop learning and being interested in the world around you, you never truly grow old. I hope you have a great year too!

I have an unknown brain condition, so I truly understand your sadness and devastation at losing your sister. Mine began 2009, it is a really difficult thing to live with, but there is never ever a day goes by that I am so grateful to be here. I will be 68 this summer, not how I would have chosen to spend retirement years, but life is very previous so enjoy it, don’t be afraid of getting older, there are many benefits believe it or not!!!

    • Jackie Kabler February 26, 2016 at 12:15 pm -  Reply

      Hi Christine,
So sorry to hear about your condition but your attitude is brilliant. Often when something difficult happens in life there’s nothing you can do to change the circumstances, but you CAN change your attitude towards those circumstances and that makes a massive difference. You’re right about not being afraid of getting older, and yes life is precious. Thanks so much for your message.

    Hi Jackie
Embrace it turning 50 is no big deal, just make sure you do what you want and don’t be pushed into what people expect you to do!
I made my mind up that i wanted a nice piece of jewellry a party and a week away in spain with my hubby!
That’s just what i got and couldn’t have been happier, but when i was 60 i didn’t want that all i wanted was my lovely family meal a curry night out with my work collegues and then 2 weeks in Lanzarote with hubby.
So whatever you decide to do hope you have a wonderful 50th and buy the way you do not look anywhere near 50!!! you always look amazing.
happy birthday and lots of love

Years ago I lost my husband at age 38, I was 29, and yes losing someone young makes one realise just how precious each day is.
