Caroline Macleod-Smith is a personal stylist and the current on-air guest for fashion brand Liz Claiborne New York, and she will be here on September 29th to share their latest collection with us.
She runs her own personal styling business and her website, Style Bureau, includes a blog with her favourite high street finds. Ahead of the brand’s show, we invited Caroline to come along to Q Towers, pick out her hero piece from the latest collection, and share a couple of examples of how to wear the look. Here’s what she had to say…
Jackets are major news for Autumn/Winter 2014, with one of the biggest trends being for softer, unlined jackets that have a more casual feel to them.
When I reviewed the September 2014 range with the Liz Claiborne New York design team, I was so excited to see such a fabulous take on the trend! Ever since Liz Claiborne launched her first collection in 1976, the brand has been known for timeless, feminine designs with a preppy, sportswear twist, and this gorgeous jersey jacket is just that! It’s made in a two-tone, soft, cotton-rich material with no lining and just binding on the seams. This gives it a less structured, softer appearance than the usual tailored jacket, giving it a more modern and relaxed feel.
There are small shoulder pads for those who like to add a little structure to their frame, but these are easily removed if you wish. It has a two-button fastening which can be fastened for a smarter look or left open for a more casual feel. There are also two functional flap pockets at the front and it’s beautifully cut with shaping through the waist for a flattering fit.
I styled the jacket in two ways – the black and cream jacket was styled for a more formal work outfit or lunch date occasion. I paired it with some black bootleg trousers, a crisp white shirt, some ankle boots and a black satchel bag for a timeless and striking monochrome outfit. I’ve completed the look with a chunky beaded bullet necklace from MarlaWynne.
The mocha and cream version was then styled for a more casual occasion – the perfect outfit for a shopping trip with the girls! I pulled together rich, earthy tones that work so beautifully for the autumn season – a rust-coloured jersey long sleeve top, a green printed scarf, an olive green and tan shopper bag from orYANY, some Diane Gilman skinny jeans in indigo, and these gorgeous chocolate knee high boots, which gave the outfit an equestrian feel.
This fabulous bouclé, unlined jacket is an absolute must-have for your autumn/winter wardrobe. Not only does it offer a practical piece as the weather turns cooler, but it can also really make an outfit and add wow factor too! After all, just like shoes, you can never have too many jackets!
