I was out planting my giant agapanthus that arrived the other day in a small border at the front on my house. I was looking at the slightly bare patch and wondering what would look good in there, as I got an email from work. We get notifications when special Today’s Special Value offers are confirmed and this email told me about a lovely offer for some lilies. They are from Mont Rose and one of the varieties was very popular last year, but this year, we are really outdoing ourselves.
Two fantastic lily varieties are ‘Cali’ and ‘Triumphator’. They are a cross between a Longiflorum and an Oriental lily and the result is an elegant tubular bloom with a lighter freesia fragrance than the heady perfume of traditional Orientals. Mont Rose will be supplying us with good sized bulbs (14/16cm) and as lilies are very hardy, the bulbs will grow bigger each year resulting in taller plants year on year. A wonderful combination of fragrance and height and a delight to display in a vase indoors.
The information I got tells me I can grow them through shrubs in borders, against walls and fences, or in large pots for the patio, and let them look after themselves. They would be perfect for the border I was working on. Apparently they come into flower more quickly than Orientals so you could be enjoying stunning flowers just 12 weeks after planting.
‘Cali’ went down a storm last year. This unique lily produces large buds, up to 20cm long, and 2-4 buds on its tall stems. The buds open into luxurious, waxy white flowers with each petal delicately blushed in pink. The blooms are more open that traditional Longiflorum lilies and the fragrance is astonishing – like sweet-smelling freesias.
‘Triumphator’ produces beautiful pure-white trumpet blooms with an eye-catching wine-red centre. When open, the blooms measure up to 20cm across! This is a cross between Longiflorum and a ‘Stargazer’ type Oriental lily with a beautiful fragrance that’s most pronounced on warm sunny days.
I’ll be on air on Sunday 31st March for a three hour Michael Perry garden show and will be very happy to speak to Rupert from Mont Rose about these beautiful Lilies and order my own. Join us if you can!
