Jollyhollydevon, QVC makes headlines & self pub news

Top picThis week –

– A fab holiday in the Sunny South West – and what a week for it!

– It’s official, QVC is the global number one retail outlet! The Mail, The Mirror and more!

– What bird is this? Watch the clip and let me know!

– And big news about my novel… And – in RiWiSi – a blog for self-publishers.

Plus THE Ant and Dec archive blooper, sneaky peeks and the week ahead on QVC…

Ladram bay historyMe? Want to come home? Naaaaah! Yes, well I had to! Lol. I’m just back from the most lovely week away on the coast in picturesque Devon! Found a fab Camp and Caravan site called Ladram Holiday Park – perfect for our motorhome. Plus the added bonus – for me – of lots of history!

O – M – G it was amaaazing, with the wonderful weather, a sea view, (just!) and a gentle breeze. A perfect panorama around the site, the bay and the bar! (click here to see it). I told brother Glenn he just has to go there with the 7 year old and the 4 year old – it’s ideal. Been there yourself? What did you think of it? It really reminded me of so many childhood hols (ten years of caravanning at Combe Haven in Hastings!), especially when we sat on the beach one afternoon enjoying these sights…

Had some nice walks along that beach, where we found some weird looking birds (see below), and just relaxed. The main reason I went tho’, was to write. And write I did. For those that have been waiting for news about the prequel, I’m now a sixth of the way there, with publication early Autumn/late summer – will keep you informed! Am at 11,500 words so far. Lovely place to do it tho!

And had some amazing food too – not dear at all – neither was the camp – I highly recommend it. From extras like crazy golf and an indoor pool, plus massive indoor soft play area and amusements if it’s wet, this family-owned 800-berth site comes highly recommended by me!

P.s. what birds are these? I had a bit of an idea from the reactions I got on facebook this week, but what do you blog people think? Watch this clip to see some very odd creatures sunbathing on Ladram beach! Then leave a comment below to tell me what you think they are.

Mail On Sunday’s You Magazine features QVC – big time! MailonSunday(You)15July13

It’s official, we are the global number one retail outlet! Seriously? Yes seriously! According to the Mail on Sunday which was just one of many major publications to feature your fave shopping channel in the run up to our 20 year anni in October. 'You Magazine' ran a huge well-written piece by a journalist who really knows their onions, qvc-wise, last Sunday. Click here to see the online version of the whole feature.

Now that made me smile! For us as staff, it’s so old hat when we have to read YET another clichéd article using QVC as an easy target, so this one was really refreshing – well-researched and supportive – well done Mail mag and writer Anna-Marie Solowij – it’s all there in the headlines.

The Sun also did us proud this week too with a big feature both online and in the paper – again talking about the many celeb’s and big brands to grace our screens – at last some seriously good coverage! Yay!

Plus Liz Earle’s recent online feature (click here) about her fab range (don’t forget it’s a Liz TSV this Saturday – I can’t wait! See last week’s blog for a sneaky of the contents!) and how she relaxes, detoxes and juggles.

And if that wasn’t enough, a Daily Mirror writer tried her hand at QVC guesting recently.

Finally, another really well-written piece, this time by @mcnally_siobhan who came in to experience a guest audition in our off-air studios, with my roomie Chloe Everton. Again, a lovely feature – do read her article (click here) – especially if you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to be on QVC – it’s a fab expose! And if you did come on as a guest, what would you present!?

Come on now, I’ve given you loads of topics to comment on this week – take the plunge and leave me one below!

Because of its mention in the above articles, I’m revisiting the famous Ant and Dec QVC live broadcast takeover, on Charlie’s Hi-Tech show, for Comic Relief in March 2011. Here it is, the full 4 minutes of it – wasn’t Charlie’s face, (and Abi Surgeon’s), a picture!

Ps otherwise, enjoy this little gem from way back when – again in keeping with the theme of the Sun article above – where John Briggs (the voice of Siri on iphones) recounts his early days on QVC when there were very few guests! This is Dale doing his own demo. Leave it to the experts Dale – or at least check before reading! Lol! Click here to watch it!

My weekly look at all things book!

Well so far my self-publishing journey since May has been very exciting, and there’s still so much to learn! See below if you’re in the same boat as me, for some excellent free advice about marketing your work. Plus a book of the week from one of the bestsellers of our generation – in disguise!

Hawaii sunsetExciting News if you liked my Novel!

For those who are new to my writings, and are keen to find out more, just to say that the complete eBook /paperback of my first novel, ‘Hawaiian Affair’ (Steamy version), is available on amazon. Click here  to see it or to leave me a review below and on amazon, if you don’t mind – that is, if you’ve already kindly read it. And what a lovely Hawaiian sunset pic from talented eh? Inspiring!

Hawaiian Affair
Anyway, my book – in all its guises – has been selling steadily and building up some lovely reviews – it’s now reached 80 five star (out of 86!). #chuffedAuthor! Please note that if you want the PG (non-steamy version!) the original serialised instalments are still up there to download in 4 separate parts.

Well, I’m glad to announce that in a month’s time, on August Bank Holiday Weekend, the alternative complete eBook version of my novel (the non-steamy PG format) will become available – I will unveil a special introductory price nearer the time – but it’ll be low, and just for that weekend – Friday 23rd till Monday 26th August. Whoop! In the meantime, here’s the latest review, which is really heart-warming for me to read, given it’s my first attempt at writing a romance, so thank you! Thank you all, so much.

“I am an avid reader and loved this book! Considering this is Debbie's first attempt I thought it was amazing. The intrigue, suspense, (and the steamy parts) were definitely well written. I am now looking forward to more books from this author. I couldn't put this down until I had read the last page. Well done!”

From reader Susan Rogers, in an amazon review!

The Cuckoo's callingBook of the Week

All was revealed this week that J K Rowling is the real author behind the new runaway crime bestseller ‘The Cuckoo’s Calling’, when fans began to sniff that ‘Robert Galbraith’ was really their favourite writer in another guise. Having got some decent reviews before the unveiling, and sold a decent but comparatively lowly 1,500 copies (more complete copies than my Hawaiian Affair has so far, though!, initially!), it leaked out that none other than the Harry Potter creator herself was at the bottom of this new mystery novel. And now? Well, it’s number one on the book charts, naturally! The Cuckoo's Calling tells of war veteran-turned private investigator Cormoran Strike and received good reviews when it was first published. Within hours it rose more than 5,000 places to top Amazon's sales chart. When she was revealed as Galbraith, Rowling said she had found writing under a pseudonym "a liberating experience".

She issued a statement saying she had "hoped to keep this secret a little longer" but added it had "been wonderful to publish without hype or expectation, and pure pleasure to get feedback under a different name".

Since The Casual Vacancy sold well but had mixed reviews, it’s nice to see this one doing far better for J K. And why not have a pseudonym? Lots of writers do after all. Usually it is so as not to confuse genres. Any you know of? Leave me a comment below…

Book heartSelf-Pub Spot

Considering my own books are self-published, when I saw this blog I had to share it. If you’re new to this stuff, but interested in writing your own book, just to explain – writers do ‘guest blogs’ on other writer’s blogs, which helps to spread awareness of their own work. But usually it’s via offering some key knowledge for free, in the form of an interesting, fact-filled blog.

Eminent blogger and writer Joanna Penn (writes fiction under J F Penn too) has written a fascinating run down of ‘5 Book Marketing Myths You Need to Forget.’  (Click to read the whole blog). And explode these myths she does, in a really helpful, encouraging way to us newbie authors. Ironically it’s also in itself a typical example of perfect marketing – how plugging a book within the perfect environment can mean the fastest route to solid sales – just read down the comments and all will be revealed. By the way, I bought it too! 🙂 Enjoy.

Books– On the back of RiWiSi this week, here’s a little funny for you! Click here to see what happens when some famous books lose one letter – very witty!

Outdoor pools– With all the hot weather, and following my holiday and last week’s swim theme, here are some amazing outdoor pools for you to ogle… and if you can’t get anywhere near one yourself, indoor or outdoor, at least make sure your feet are in a bowl of cool water when you click on the link here… :-)

Pleased pog– On my return, my four Labradors were pleased as punch to see me, bless them! Including fat-dog Gracie, who spent a good ten minutes rolling about on her back on the cool kitchen floor, wanting a belly rub!

Which she got, in abundance! 🙂

Motorhome sign– Loved some of these funny slogans on offer inside the shop on the camping site this week – don’t worry, I didn’t choose any to display! Doesn’t stop me agreeing with the sentiment tho! Hehe!

BB– #BBUK update. ‘Big Bother’ on C5’s nightly Big Brother late this week, with ‘surprisingly intelligent’ Callum (he is, actually) sticking up for himself quite politely to his love interest’s mum Jackie (yes a mum and daughter are in this year’s series), and being annihilated in response, by the old dragon! Yuk. Hope she goes in Friday’s eviction. And before anyone asks, or judges, yes it’s my secret indulgence, when I take a break from reading the New Scientist and blogs about Quantum Physics… 😉 What’s yours? Lol. Ps If you watch it, has it occurred to you whether the mother is connected with the problems Charlie has had in the past?! Anyway, go #TeamCallum!

– PS if you like the same TV I do, are you also chuffed to see that the third series of Trollied is back on sky 1 on 22nd August?!

– And finally – funny dog video from Sarah my lovely blog lady – her final pick this week. And it’s a good one! Such a clever animal – if mine were like that I’d teach them to make me a morning cup of tea! What skill would you teach your pet, if they could learn it?! Leave me a comment below.

1db3b05– Ps and extra last snippet to say thanks to lovely Sarah – here she is – I’m sure you’ll join me in wishing her all the best in the next post-uni stage of her life and thanks for uploading all my weekly scribblings and pics and links into something presentable!

WATCH – A fascinating documentary about the benefits of juicing and a healthy lifestyle this week on telly – with Joe Cross’s own story of his drastic solution to being overweight and seriously unhealthy. The programme Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead features some amaaaazing statistics and frightening facts, and if you like health topics as much as I do, please pass this on to as many people as you can who need it – he lost a lot of weight by drinking healthy green juice for 60 days. (marlene would be proud!) Obviously there’s a lot of other sides to a story like this, but my goodness, what a great eye opener to what’s out there if you’re looking for a solution to a problem – your own or someone else’s. And after all – doesn’t he look great! Am happy to recommend this show for sure – am looking forward to watching the rest of it and will report back any fab statistics and info next week. This is a trailer (you can search for the whole film on youtube too).

We’ve just been given samples of a new hair product to try – called ‘Wen’ it’s the hottest thing in haircare on QVC US and will be coming to us in September time – and judging from the reviews on the QVC US site, this ‘cleansing conditioner’, which doesn’t foam but leaves hair natural, soft and not stripped, will go down a storm!

Oo oo the fab Liz Earle TSV on Saturday (20th) if you’re reading this in time! (Mine’s the 3pm show) Plus the long-awaited (recently ‘sneaky-peeked’) Apple iPad Mini is our TSV this Sunday – I’ll be on with lovely Lee Hohbein at 4pm with it – if it hasn’t sold out! Fingers crossed!

Plus after-the-weekend blog readers, if you like comfort and support but can’t bear wearing heavy, underwired bra’s (or no bras) in this weather, join me Monday night for a three-pack of slim n lift bras, the leisure bra updated to include foam pads and sooo comfy!

Plus it’s our annual yule-fest on 24th and (of course) 25th as we celebrate Christmas in July including my Charlie Bears show (25th, 10pm) and musical xmas lights, Yankee Candles, Santa’s Toy Shop and the whole nine yards! Lol. Get your red cap out and join us!

Have a fab week!

Best wishes

    Hi Debs
watch you all the time on QVC -never realized you had written a book and so interested in your blog today. I have written a true story of my life over the past 10 years. A terrifying ordeal and my subsequent journey towards better health, and future happiness. I am unfortunately one of 250 thousand in the UK who have ME/ Chronic fatigue and are housebound, hence why I now get to watch QVC OFTEN!!
Thank you for your direction to self publish and I will read this with great interest. Wish me luck! Good luck with your own writing and presenting on QVC.

Hi Debbie, glad you are enjoying your hols!
Regarding the birds. Perhaps they are young seagulls, which can be greyish in colour. Could be wrong but it’s just an idea!

Couldn’t put it down was a fab read!! Cannot wait for book two!! Well done Debbie!! Definitely 5 stars.

Glad you enjoyed your hols. QVC is getting WEN, tried it when it was on TV in an infomercial before I got hold of Ojon that is!
Also great to see QVC getting some fantastic press coverage too, it’s come a long way in 20 years becoming like one of the family and we remember when it first started too. As well as the presenters past and present. Your energetic and bubbly laugh was what drew us to watching you initially!

    Hi Debs,
Good to see you back on air, but pleased you had a good break. It looks very tranquil where you were. I’m sitting in my very hot garden, listening to my QVC water feature at the moment and listening to the seagulls that seem to be going potty for some reason! There must be food around.
Your birds are definitely Seagulls, but they are young, probably 1 year olds. The young are quite big birds with brown downy feathers. They remain brown and gradually obtain their adult plumage. Often it takes 2 years, but some species take longer. Incidentally there over 50 types of Seagulls!
These look like Heron Gulls, not the largest type, but large enough when they dive bomb you! Living by the sea I have suffered with seagulls nesting on my roof. Absolute hell! May to August I felt like I couldn’t go out into my garden as I was seen as a threat! 3 eggs hatched out and as they became too big for the gap between the chimney and the roof, the parents moved them to my flat garage roof and turned it into a nursery! unfortunately my home is built on a hill so the new nursery was level with my front door! I was attacked every time I tried to come and go.
I asked for advice and was told to use an umbrella or wear a hat! I have since taken precautions, spikes every where, although this didn’t work at first and I had to get people to remove the nests as they were built! 2 years ago it took 8 days of removing their nests to get them to go away!
So far nothing since, but they come back every year and think about it and I remain vigilant!
Great to read your news and interesting features, look forward to next week!
    Cath x
P.S. I registered my email on your website, but I have not received any news from there. Is it up and running?

    Hi Debs
Fab blog as usual! Just have to say that I read your book last week on holiday in Greece!!! Fantastic, I couldn’t put it down! Almost read it all on the first day, which I would have finished but didn’t as only took the one book to read thinking I would take my time, therefore tried my best to make it last for a few days!! Proved very difficult and kept thinking of what would happen next between Sadie and Mac. Can’t wait for the next one, I will be first in line for the paperback.
I also watch BB and quite like Callum, not keen on Dexter though!
Also 11 days and counting, my red carpet manicure is doing well especially having been on holiday with all the chlorine and Sun.
    Have a good week.

    Happy shopper-
You should definitely self publish. It’s really easy if you can follow a few basic guidelines – good book on kindle called ‘build your ebook’ or something like that. In September I’m going to do a blow by blow ‘how to’ so look out for it hon! Many of my writing friends are doing same thing – self pub’d autobiography as well as novels. Satisfying to do too.
Thanks so much for your kind comments.
    Big hugs and best wishes.

If not do feel free. I read them all and it means a lot!

What a saga with those nesting gulls! Scary and annoying all in one! Course they don’t know or care that it’s your home. Funny how they return to the same place to nest year after year eh.
    Hope this year is ok!
Ps not done an email newsletter yet hon -I’m getting the ‘how to’ guide soon so planning to get one out early Aug!
