It’s still standing

Chisitmas treeYou remember the old Elton John track 'I'm Still Standing', which incidentally I used to use years ago when I taught Body Conditioning classes? Well I've changed it slightly to 'It's Still Standing', referring to our Christmas tree!!!

It was with more than a little trepidation that I agreed that Sophie and her flatmate, Gilly, could bring their cats, Oskar and Milo, for a two-day stay over Christmas. We had managed to keep Wilfy off the tree with the help of an occasional spritz of water but we thought maybe with the three of them chasing around, lights and baubles would be flying everywhere.

Wilfy in a Santa suitThey barely touched the tree, apart from the occasional passing swipe at a bauble, they were much more interested in playing games with each other. We had a few manic moments but most of the time they were very well behaved.

Oskar had a Christmas jumper, which I didn't manage to get a picture of, and Milo had a Santa suit which Wilfy borrowed to pose for this picture.

He was less impressed with the leg warmers and Santa hat that Sophie bought for him to wear and wouldn't let us put them on him.

Christmas dinnerWe had a lovely morning exchanging gifts and Christmas lunch was just right for the six of us, Chris's mum was staying as well, before we had our traditional afternoon stroll just before dusk.

We played the name game, even funnier than usual, before watching a film and cutting into the Christmas cake…Sophie's favourite food of the day! It was a simple Christmas and I feel very blessed to have spent it in the company of people I love.

Christmas cakeI was back at work Boxing Day, after my team had squeezed a 1 – 0 victory over Aston Villa in injury time, which was the icing on the cake. Speaking of which I have just iced the second Christmas cake I make each year to take into work for the backstage staff at QVC. I'm on this afternoon at 4pm with Winter Solutions and then Fashion on Friday featuring Lulu Guiness – hope you'll join me.

My last day on air this year is tomorrow – I will be launching the Pilates TSV with Marjolein Brugman at midnight. I mentioned at the top of this blog that I used to teach fitness classes so I have always been very concious about the importance of exercise in our lives, particularly as most of us have a more sedentary lifestyle these days.

I absolutely swear by my Aeropilates machine, especially since the addition of the cardio board and the pull-up bar. If your New Year's resolution for 2014 is to get fit then this could be the way to get you started…it has been fabulous for me in what has been a very challenging eighteen months, health-wise.

Thanks for all the interaction and support on here over the past twelve months and apologies that I am a bit behind with my replies at the moment. I'll let you know the results fo last week's just-for-fun competition next week as well.

Wishing you all a Happy and Healthy 2014!

Much love,
Julia xx

    Hi Julia,
I am glad you had a great Christmas Day with your loved ones. Wilfy sounds quite well-behaved too! He does look cute too – I’ve been researching about having a rescue cat and I hadn’t realised but Black cats are on the “list” of cats who find it hard to get a home. But Wilfy has landed well with you most definitely!!
You take care and you are an extremely busy lady so don’t pressure yourself in replying to all of us, me included!!
A very Happy and Healthy New Year to you,
    Beth XXX.

    Hi Ros
Hope your Christmas tree survived with your three little ‘darlings’ ?
Palace did very well on Boxing Day and were unlucky 2 days later not to take a point from the game at Man City. Apparently we are the first team this season to concede less than 2 goals at the Etihad (according to Richard Keyes) and Joe Hart, their keeper, was man of the match – speaks volumes!
    Happy & Healthy 2014

    Hi Beth
I suppose black cats are deemed to be unlucky …. weren’t witch’s cats always black? He is a gorgeous little fella as is Oskar, my daughter Sophie’s all black cat!
I have been catching up on my blog replies so that I can start the New Year with a clear conscience!
Hope it’s a good one for you

    Hello Julia
My mum likes my hair tied back too – maybe I should do it more often in the coming year. I also need to get back to my regular Pilates routine of at least twice a week as I always feel better for it.

    Hi Jan
So pleased you enjoy reading my weekly blog – I enjoy writing it!
The Santa suit was Milo’s really but we popped it on Wilfy for the photo.
    The name game is simple:
Divide the people into two teams. Everyone has ten small pieces of paper on which they write names of famous people (real or characters). The folded pieces of paper are put in a hat (we sometimes use a colander) and then the members of each time take it in turns to describe the people to the other members of their team in 30 seconds – we use an egg timer from another game.
Round 1 you can use as many words as you like without using the name.
Round 2 is miming (no talking a la charades)
Round 3 you can only use one word!
You can use less than ten names if lots of you are playing otherwise it takes too long. The last round is the funniest … Have fun
    Happy New Year
