Huntley hair – an ever-changing work in progress!

Ever since I was an eight-year-old brunette, when I asked Father Christmas for blonde hair, I have been addicted to trying different hairstyles! Sadly, Santa never did grant me my wish for blonde hair but, when I was 14, ‘Sun In’ was my first glimmer of hope that brighter hair days lay ahead. Anyone else remember that product? It was a spray that you applied to your hair to lighten it. Well, my hair is naturally very dark so I just got a few little orangey strands when I tried it out.

I progressed to home bleaching kits. Still tangibly tangerine. Determined not to be left ‘in the dark’ I kept saving the pennies and going back for more bleach until I was yellow and then almost white! If I knew then what I know now, I’d have left well alone!

Over the years I have had short hair, shaved parts of my head, had tall and dangerously flammable spikes (thanks to 80s hair heroes such as Limahl and Howard Jones), all the way through to perms and waist-length extensions.

Well, after all the years of torturing my tresses they have protested and said enough is enough! No more bleach! I’ve had lots of people telling me how much they loved the blonde look. So did I! Sadly, though, if I carry on down that route I fear I’ll end up with no hair at all. So, I’m going back to my roots.

Sad thing is, though, even my roots aren’t my natural colour anymore, what with all the whites and greys creeping in! Still, I figure the hair dye to get it headed in that direction is far less harmful than bleaching the life out of it.

I wanted to gradually get back to my colour so went through my ginger/redhead phase. It was like Marmite for many viewers, with some loving and some hating it. I quite liked it but knew I still wanted to get a bit darker.

Before taking the plunge

As my hair has taken such a bashing I want to try not to heat style it as much as I have in the past. So, I’ve turned to the Hairdo by Hairuwear pieces, as many of them fit right over your own hair so that you’re not causing more damage.

I’m currently the shade which is known as Light Red Brown/Ginger Brown. I took my extensions to the hairdresser and just asked if they could get as close as possible to that shade, and they did a pretty good job! I’m planning to go to the next tone darker at my next appointment so have ordered the Medium Brown so I can, again, get a near-enough match.

I find this is a great way of getting the most out of these pieces. If your natural shade doesn’t exactly match its worth taking the piece with you, like I did, so they can make it more seamless. It’s a much more affordable way than getting custom-made extensions, that’s for sure.

The finished article

On days when I’m not wearing the pieces I’ve been using a hair ‘donut’ to create a bun. This is great because there’s not even minimal styling to the hair in the bun. Just put your hair in a ponytail, slide the donut down to the base of it then pull up to the ends and roll the hair down around the outside of it – then keep rolling over until the bun is in place. It holds all by itself with no grips and when I take it out my ponytail is curly from being held in a rolled up position! Double whammy!

There’ll probably never come a day when I’m not trying something new with my hair but I quite like this look and can’t wait for the Hairuwear team to bring us even more styles to play with!

Love Catherine xx

Hi Catherine I enjoyed reading your articles you are one of my favourite presenters and I have watched you through all of your transformations on QVC going from curvy to slim blonde brunette and red long or shorter hair.
The most important thing I must say is you looked beautiful in all of these phases you just have an aura that shines as beautiful on the inside and out.
Personally I love the red but I think the pictures you have shared abit darker is the best you have ever looked loving it xx

Hi, I still use Sun-In. It works well on my hair which is mousey with grey in places. I hate being brown and a quick spray then blow dry sorts it out. I was very blonde until 13 and bought a hair dye and it gave me white roots and yellow ends. My Mum asked if I had dyed it and I said it was talcum powder! I used talc as dry shampoo which had not been invented in the early 60’s – or if it had I did not know. I used to love Breck shampoo which disappeared by the 70’s. Good luck with your hair journey.

Hello Catherine, love your hair, it’s so shiny, yes in the past I have used ‘sun-in’.
Now need tints, low lights & highlghts, as I have so much white hair!
Hope you are enjoying your few weeks off work, time for yourself, and house chores! which are never ending!
    Take care xx

Whilst I love your hair as it is now (I think it looks really natural on you), please don’t ever let other people’s opinions affect you. I have seen some of those quite abrupt posts that seem to be telling you what to do and they drive me mad. You are a lovely, happy person who can do whatever you like, and always look fab anyway!

Just to add, I was talking about fb & twitter, not the comments on here, sorry.

Oh, and I ended up with a bright orange fringe from trying to get a blonde fringe in the 80’s, ha ha!

Hi Catherine, you look stunning whatever your hair colour. I’ve watched you go through different hair colours recently and I’ve sat and understood and sympathised with you knowing the damage bleaching hair can do because half of my hair broke to an inch long and I had to wear a hat for 8 months so I fully understand when your hair has had enough. Your hair will grow and I enjoy watching you as you come across as a kind, funny and humble lady and you are beautiful whatever your hair colour, length or style. Enjoy your new look x

Hi Catherine, I was watching you on the Earth Spirit programme
which I thoroughly enjoyed, and you mentioned your hair and one
of the models had short hair and you said you used to have short hair. I remember and I thought at the time a few years ago how it suited you and how pretty you looked it was a style like Twiggy used to have. When you mentioned your hair I thought it was a good time to say you look lovely whatever colour or style, but I do think short hair does suit you. x

I remember the days when I had a full head of hair that shade. In the sun it had a red tinge, inherited from Grandad Red(itt). I saw a Youtube clip of you in your brunette days, and it still suits you!

That part I read about Sun In made me chuckle to myself. I DO remember Sun In. I was desperate to try it on my mousey brown hair, but when my mum caught sight of it, she banned me from using it, telling me bad stories and that my hair would fall out!! After that, I was petrified to try it! Lol. Mind you I made up for it when I was older by dyeing my hair different colours. I ended up being bleached blonde until I was 30 (because of the upkeep costs!) Then I went red, and have tried numerous different shades of red for the past 20 years.
Oh, and i would love to use those clip in hair pieces, but I have never seen one in a true red. Have you? The ones I have seen on you have really suited you. I think they are fab! Well, make sure you take care of you.

I think you are being a bit harsh on Catherine. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but maybe hurtful ones should be kept inside of you. She did state the reason for going dark. Not everyone can afford to go to a really top end hairdressers. But at the end of the day it’s up to Catherine.
By the way, none of what I have written has been said or meant in malice.

considering you didn’t want to come across as rude, that is exactly what you have done. You might not like Catherine’s hair, but it is only your opinion. Rather than go on about it, insulting her and Ruth Langsford continually, you could have just said you preferred her blonde. She clearly said she was brunette as a child and was going back to her natural colour. Sometimes it’s nicer simply to hold your e-tongue.

Hi Catherine you have always been one of my favourite presenters on QVC very honest and down to earth. I love your hair it’s natural colour but I wanted to mention Wen hair products I first bought it because you said you used that product. I went to QVC to order more today and found there were no Wen Products there. I went to google to source the product and was shocked to see the Wen company are being sued, people claiming their hair falling out after using this product. Hope you are not still using it and do think QVC could have waned customers about it. They must know something as they are not selling it anymore. Cath
