How things have changed

I was out for a walk the other day and saw these big beasties parked at the side of the field…… they’re enormous!

The big Beasties

I was thinking how things had changed and saw this picture, which I photographed with my phone, on the wall in a pub nearby.

I wonder what the people who used to plough with heavy horses would have made of these massive machines ripping up the fields.

Apparently they don’t plough anymore – they scratch the top of the field and at the same time drill it (put the seeds in) and flatten it as they go. One pass and the whole lot is done. Before they would have ploughed, then harrowed then drilled the seeds and maybe even had more to do.

Finished field

The fields don’t look as picturesque anymore but I gather it may prevent run off and keep soil structure intact better so I guess it could be a better system, but I kinda miss the olden days!!

    Hello Sexy

Are the two English Springer Spaniels in the first picture yours?

If so I think they should feature in the blogs more often; having one myself, I know that they provide never ending fun & are very entertaining.

Glad to see that you ended your walk at The local (?) I’m thinking that you are probably a Real Ale man, (as all the good ones are)

    Do respond

I just love the heavy horses and so did my mother, sadly gone now, but we used to buy calendars with them on when we found them on holiday in Wales.
In fact we both loved them so much that when she passed last year I had the stone-
mason depict a man behind two of them ploughing a field and it looks just great.
I know she will be as delighted with it as I am. You were very lucky to see them close
    too Simon.

    Hi Cirensiren

Ahh….. theyt are not Springer Spaniels! They are mine ( Toby and Jamie) but they are Brittany’s. They used to be called Brittany Spaniels but the first part stuck. I love ’em! playful, loyal and full of fun…… just like your springers!
