Home trends of the trade: Coast

Whenever we meet designers and brands, we love to ask what inspires them and where they get their ideas from.

More often than not, the answer is nature. The naturally-ocurring colour combinations, patterns, textures, and fragrances – and there is an infinite number of sources to choose from, be it plants, landscapes, seasons, or anything else that might catch your eye.

Judging by the latest collections from Peony, Yankee Candle, and Culinary Concepts, the coast is the latest natural beauty to have its moment in the sun. With its other-worldly creatures and distinctive textures and colours, it’s clear why.

The basis of Peony’s range is purely sentimental, being inspired by founder Julie Bates’ family hometown of Salcombe in Devon. With the quiet, quintessentially-British town as its muse, the collection includes clean and bright faux flowers with rustic, ornate vases.

We especially love this Hydrangea Roses & Foliage arrangement in a floral embossed vase and Orchid in ceramic pot. It’s clear from these two alone just how much work has gone into the creation of this range, with so much detail in each beautiful vase. These pieces are perfect for adding an airy touch to your summer home, providing full, realistic blooms day in, day out.

Yankee Candle’s Coastal Living collection is equally classical, conjuring up scents of salty air, wild flowers, and woody warmth.

The subtle scents are ideal for burning at the same time and mixing together. We love the idea of mixing their large jar trio – Garden by the Sea, Sea Air, and Coastal Living? Yes, yes, and yes!

The collection also features a number of gorgeous decorative candle holders and wax melts. Not only do these hold a functional purpose, protecting any surfaces from wax and heat, but they transform your candle into a beautiful ornament in its own right. The pieces embrace the nautical theme, with rope, glass, blues and whites as the key materials and colours.

Last but not least, we have the oceanic collection from Culinary Concepts. The tableware brand have taken a quirky approach to this subject, with a focus on recreating intricate sealife creatures and objects in a sleek stainless steel finish. You can see the craftsmanship in action with their Seashore Salad Bowl, featuring a detail starfish decoration and tarnish-look edging.

As well as the sentimental or nostalgic reasoning pulling us into all things coastal, the nautical look is downright smart. The range has a number of pieces you’d be more than happy to have displayed on your dinner table, like this leather-handled champagne bucket. The simple features such as the chunky bolts, contrasting plaque, and ridged detail result in an effortlessly chic design to make special occasions that bit more special.
