Hair today, gone tomorrow

Next week you’ll see me sporting curly tresses again. I alternate between that hair do and my straight do. Just taking a short break from my extensions, because if I leave them in too long, my own hair underneath is prone to damage. In fact, it’s the curly look I have in the blog photo and also in this video when Will and I had a good old natter back in September whilst I was rehearsing for my first shows! Can you believe it’s been 7 weeks now?? There’ve been over 6,000 hits on this. Yikes!!

The art of goatee growing

And speaking of hair, get a look at this. A close up of Austen’s goatee. We thought we’d make a contribution, for personal reasons, to Movember. Growing a moustache in aid of Prostate Cancer, Testicular Cancer and Mental Health is a superb idea to raise awareness of the cancers which can strike at any age. So for the last few weeks, Austen’s been crafting this Robert Downey Jr/Tony Stark/'Iron Man' look for a while. In all the years I’ve known Austen I’ve never seen him with a beard. I think it looks fab. What do you think?

Imperial Raspberry StoutRaspberry Stout, anyone?

You might have read somewhere that I’m a big fan of beer. In fact I’m a Beer Sommelier (someone whose taken and passed exams on their beer knowledge). I’ve conducted beer tastings on shows like This Morning and also The Alan Titchmarsh Sshow!

So I thought I’d show you a pic of a cheeky little beer I had a few sips of last night. It’s as dark as Guinness, but slightly sweeter, this one was also a lot less bitter (because not all beers are bitter!) and it’s brewed with fresh raspberries so it had a sharp and sour kick to it too. It would be the perfect compliment to a chocolate tart or even a cheesecake topped with fresh raspberries and a good dollop of chocolate ice-cream. The stout’s brewed by the adorable guys at Thornbridge Brewery (based in the Peak District in Derbyshire). The big surprise was when I tweeted this picture last night, all my beer fans turned cartwheels in excitement, asking me where they could get it and how they could try it. So that got me thinking about compiling my Top Ten Christmas Beers List for you – I’ve done it the last few years but I’m going to share it with you too, so you can go hunt down some lovely bits and bobs for yourself and your Significant Other, if you like.

203294New beauty videos coming up with me and Alison Young

Last week Alison Young and I filmed some videos for our QVC Beauty Channel (Sky channel 658, Freesat channel 816 and Freeview channel 35) discussing some of the make-up, skin and haircare lines you can buy from us which are suitable for darker skin tones, and also for non-European hair types and textures. So we answered questions posed by QVC viewers about hydrating and moisturising darker Mediterranean, Asian and African-Caribbean skin tones, as well as chatting about any viewers who are of dual heritage whose hair needs more moisture or is prone to frizzinesss. Philip Kingsley's Elasticiser Extreme is something I'm going to be trying on my relaxed hair, in the few weeks I'm resting my hair from extensions.

Those videos are on their way in the coming days on QVC Beauty, so keep a look out for reminders on my Twitter page @TVMarv and also my Facebook page and another blog next week!

    Hi Marv
Yay shows for us who aint of european heritage! At last. Pleaae let us know on ur blog when they r starting! Thank u 4 doing it. I did use PK hair stuff 4 a while but av found more effective ranges for my hair and cheaper not sold on qvc im afraid. Also Ojon did nothing for me. Be interesting to hear ur findings. Will watch the shows tho.
Not bad Austen! Actually a good likeness. Robert Yummy Jr is in a league of his own tho hummener hummener hummener lol. He gets better with age.
Mental health issues are close to my heart as i suffer from severe prolonged depression. Ive known a number of people affected by cancer. Some still here many years later some not. All the best with it.
    Take care sweet xxxx

    Hi Marverine,
I’m looking forward to seeing the new hair-do! I’m sure you’ll look great.
Well done to Austen on growing his goatee – he looks good! I hadn’t realised “Movember” was for 2 male cancers plus mental health. It’s important that men’s health is kept in the spotlight and mental health is “hidden” at times and there needs to be more understanding.
The description of the beer was wonderful! I gave up alcohol a few years ago but I still look forward to seeing the Top Ten as you of course know your stuff and will give me ideas for presents.
I hope you and Austen are doing ok and I look forward to seeing you on the screen soon – you were great on one of the food shows as it made me want to start cooking!
    Lots of love,
    Beth XX.

    HI Tania, HI Beth
Forgive me for not seeing your messages sooner. So good to hear from you. Yes we’ve made our donation to Movember and we’re contributing to some other charities this Christmas instead of buying lots of presents and cards for friends, family and work colleagues.
Tania – glad to hear you’ve tried PK and Ojon – it is a case of trying items in search of what works for your hair type, so glad you’ve settled on something that works for you.
Beth – I’m about to write a new blog with a few beer suggestions – I’ve run out of time to list a Top Ten but a Top Five should sort you out and the beers I suggest are ones that are easily available in large supermarkets. Thanks so much, Ladies and I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year xxx

    Hello Marverine,
Just come across your blog, so well done for getting the QVC gig. It will be great to have a black female on board, especially one with natural hair, like myself. I have been tempted by the PK range but it is a little expensive so will be watching keenly how your hair responses.
    Good luck

    Hi Marverine,
It is lovely and exciting to see you at QVC. On the topic of make up products for black women whose skin color is darker than Halle Berry and Beyonce please lets have more.
    Love Saada
