Game on

Julia's lilies and their meerkat"Game on" – that was what Chloe Everton tweeted six weeks ago when all the presenters were handed a tub, a bag of compost and ten lily bulbs. Michael Perry from Thompson & Morgan, who I affectionately call the 'gardening geek' after misreading his twitter name @gardening_greek, had set us a challenge to grow lilies. The best ones as judged by Michael will be named after the grower.

Chloe is very competitive and, within 24 hours, had a picture on twitter with her pot already planted up…crikey! I managed to get mine planted that weekend and then had to wait with bated breath for the the first sign of them two weeks later.

In the meantime my roomie, Anna Cookson, had a problem. She does have outdoor space where she lives but she didn't have any transport to take everything home so I suggested she plant them in our dressing room and then I could water them for her when she wasn't going to be in.

Anna's liliesIt seemed like a good idea at the time but after a few weeks and still no sign of shoots I volunteered to bring them home and be a surrogate mum to them. I am pleased to say they are now flourishing (pictured left), and although they are a little way behind most people's, I have assured Anna that it is not a race and not necessarily the biggest ones that will win.

I think the judging is at the end of July so I will let you know the winner then. Chloe's look huge, Ali Young is keeping quiet about hers, and so is Jilly Halliday. Jilly's Lilies – has a nice ring to it don't you think?

I have the lilies under the porch as apparently they don't like too much water so with the summer we are having so far I figured it would be best for me to manage how much water they get. I guess we should have expected rain this week as Wimbledon is underway…come on Andy!

They are being watched over by my meerkat solar light that I mentioned to you was a birthday present a couple of weeks back (see the picture at the top of this post)…hopefully he will scare any 'critters' away!

Talking of scaring critters, how weird is this? We have a fox that lives on the green opposite our house. A couple of evenings last week we watched the fox being chased across the green by a pair of crows! Have you ever seen that happen?

Today is Jewellery Day on QVC and I'm on at 2pm with Skagen watches so I must dash but not before I give you a heads-up on next Sunday. As well as my swimming gala it is Super Sunday on QVC. Can't say too much but the day will be packed with loads of your favourite brands at special prices!!!

Have a great weekend.

Julia xx

Good luck with your swimming gala Julia. Ive already backed your roomie and Chloe in the Chloe-lily race so Im afraid I cant desert the Everton team! Speaking of football – did you get the link there! – Hows CPFC plans for the Premiership going? Phase two of the Rangers return starts soon. I cant wait! We have made some very decent additions and should be more than able to win promotion and maybe even win a Cup although I dont want to play Celtic this season yet!
Hope you are well and you’re Julia-lily is growing fast!
    Good luck for Sunday xxxxxx

    Hi Julia,
Your Lilies look nice and healthy, they do take a long time to start growing dont they. I planted some the year before last and you seemed to wait forever before you got any sign of them growing. In the end I had a lovely display, but for some reason they did not survive the winter, I put them in the greenhouse away from the frost, but no they did not want to grow anymore, very disappointed. Hope you get better luck with yours and of course Anna’s.
Love the Meerkat light, not seen one of those before.
I am so glad Andy Murray is doing well, let’s hope it continues.
You mention Skagen watches, maybe you can answer this question for me, one of the watches I have which has the blue face, the battery seems dead, I have looked online and so many people say that an ordinary Jewellers won’t replace the battery in Skagen watches, should I send it back to one of their distributors, I can get the name from the box?
I wish you all the best for your swimming Gala.
    Take care.
    Love Jean XX

    Hi Julia
Good Luck with your swim, I know you’ll do well and have just looked at the pennies raised so far, which is brilliant for your 2 charities. Nice to see fellow presenters and guests chipping in too to support you!
Sooo sad to hear about Beulah, she was a beautiful model and no doubt will be sadly missed by many…thoughts go out to her children, family and friends. Another beautiful Star twinkling in the night sky!
    Bit emotional now…

    Hi Julia
Back again, just had to walk away for a minute or two!
As the saying goes, chickens and hatch, well they certainly did, our buyers, buyer pulled out on Friday, so back to square one again, with viewings at the weekend!
My blood test was negative for thyroid, but glands still up and have been having pains in left arm and chest, so was hooked up to heart machine yesterday, then had to take my bloods direct to hospital to check I hadn’t had an attack over weekend (heart disease in family, Dad had his at 47, then went on until 75, which was pretty good really). Spoke to GP this morning, no heart attack, but cholesterol very high, so bloods again in morning. Now this I don’t understand, because my diet is better than it’s ever been.
He did suspect that my pains were due to stress levels with everything going on, house, menopause, forthcoming surgery etc etc. I did tell him that as for the surgery, I do want to go in and come out the other end though!
Anyway, as I said previously in another blog these things certainly come to try us…amazing what stress can do to your body!

    Hi Steven
Can’t believe you would back Chloe and Anna over me when it comes to growing lilies – I have buds on mine now so hoping they may flower soon.
Palace have signed Gaye from Peterborough and there are rumours about Carton Cole amongst others.
Looking forward to paying more attention once the gala is over and done with this Sunday – it has been time consuming but very worthwhile causes!
We have Spurs at hoe first game of the season – who do Rangers have?
    Speak soon

    Hi Ginny
I don’t know why your recent posts didn’t go up … I put it down to computer gremlins!
I had a lovely birthday and a fab holiday with Steve and Denise! Unfortunately it spurred Denise to go in search of old photos from our Price is Right days ….. geez I was so slim! Lovely memories though.
I’m so sorry to hear that Jeff is still having bad side effects – good news about the scans and MRI though. You have perhaps heard if you read other Presenter’s blogs that our beautiful model Beulah lost her fight with cancer this week – terribly sad.
I heard about the forest fires in Arizona – just awful. The weather does seem very erratic at the moment all around the world.
Everything is more or less ready for the gala. I did my final training swim sat night – 80 lengths of the pool I am going to be swimming in on Sunday – it wasn’t too bad, and I didn’t get cramp in my toes which was a bonus. We already beat the target for fundraising so I set a new one – we have almost reached that so I am really grateful to the people who ave donated their hard-earned cash.
Can’t remember if I told you One Hundred Lengths of the Pool is available as an ebook on Amazon and iTunes now?
Look after your an AND yourself

    Hi Sandra
Really pleased you got the Kim and Co dress and that you love it – so flattering and eye catching !
Thanks for your compliments about my book – all I ever wanted was for the people who bought it to like it and the feedback has been very positive ….. do leave a review on the website if you would like.

    Hello Jean
The sunshine last weekend as brought my lilies on nicely – they are in bud so maybe not too far from flowering. Anna’s have caught up really well and looking good too. I love the little meerkat lantern so welcoming when I come home late at night.
It was a bit of a close shave for Murray yesterday -I missed the final set as I had gone for my last training swim before the gala – thanks again for your donation. Hopefully I’ll be ale to put some pictures on ext week’s blog.
I think the best bet is to send your watch back to Skagen for a new battery, at least then you’ll know you’ve got the right one.
    Fingers crossed for Murray

    Hi Annette
It was very upsetting to hear that Beulah had passed away but she was suffering towards the end so probably a blessed release …… a really lovely day who will be missed by many.
Sorry to hear about your house sale falling through – one of the reasons it has taken us so long to find a house is that we are in a great position with nothing to sell so we just want to make the right choice.
I’m glad your thyroid is ok – have you had a full blood count done? My cholesterol readings were inaccurate because of the CML so I am glad they are doing your bloods again.
Try and relax a bit before your op as stress can also hinder recovery.
I will be pleased when the gala is over and I will have a bit more time to myself – at least that is the plan – very happy with the money raised so far.

Hi Julia hope the Gala was a major success. Lovely weather its been lately too which always helps put a smile on people’s faces.
CPFC will need a few more players in to have a realistic chance of staying up dont you think? Rangers play Brechin on the opening day of our season. Stage two of the step back begins. Apparently we have sold 30,000 season tickets and counting. The loyalty we have shown has been unbelievable even if I do say so myself.
Also I hope your lilies are growing fast – when does the competition between you lovely ladies end?
Hope you arewell and recovered from the gala

    Hi Steven
The gala went very well thanks and I didn’t feel too bad after my 102 lengths. I was a bit tired Monday and yesterday but I had a day off today to recharge the batteries.
Palace have been signing a few new players and having a bit of a clear out too ….. getting very excited for the start of the new season. I really believe we can stay up this time and I don’t think it is just wishful thinking.
Lilies are doing well and Anna’s are in bud too. It’s not just the girls, it’s all the presenters but I’m not sure when the ‘competition’ will be judged.
    Speak soon
