Fun in the sun, Wear-By dates and ‘Now You See Me’ review

Debbie and her mumThis week –

- Family time in the sunshine!
- How dare we wear leggings over 40..?!
- A great author for you to try in my regular book section
- And 'Now You See Me' – under review!

Plus the usual sneaky peeks of upcoming QVC deals, and another great blooper!

Gosh what a busy week it’s been this week for catching up with family. Since I’d been doing so much writing – and working! – after my return from Devon (see last week’s blog for holiday pics!), I thought I’d better see some family – or several. And catch up I did! Mum and I (see top pic) went with my niece Lara to have lunch whilst I waited for my car to have some weird light in the dashboard diagnosed (they still don’t know what it is! Boo!). Then – of course – did a bit of retail therapy in Epsom.

Sister and I went to Westfield mall in Shepherd’s Bush after having a lovely spa session courtesy of a Living Social voucher, which she kindly bought me for my birthday (in May), including a mini Elemis facial – heaven! Then we saw 'Now You See Me' (see the review below) and still had time for some, er, retail therapy…

ShoesDo you see a pattern beginning to emerge here? Yes? OK so I won’t add the bit about going to Dorking with daughter and her partner to, er, do some… ok, you get the picture. I can’t help it. My name is Debbie and I’m a SA – shopping addict! Specially for shoes. #CallMeImelda…

Still what a lovely week for it. And when the shopping’s done, how great to enjoy the garden – it’s coming up well now. It’s so beautiful being outside till the sun sets and not catching a chill!

LiliesEven though the nights are getting shorter again now, I’m so pleased the weather turned at last. Long may it ‘reign’. Actually it hasn’t ‘rained’ – near me in Dorking – not much, anyway. I’d love a good thunderstorm, too. Fingers crossed we’ll get a downpour or several shortly – I’m determined my lilies (left) will be given the best shot in the upcoming presenters’ growing competition for Michael Perry from Thomson and Morgan! Hehe!

Wear-by date

How affronted was I this week to read in a paper about a supposed ‘sell by’ date for certain fashions! Apparently, according to a new survey, you’re not supposed to wear leggings past 37, stilettos past age 41, and Topshop or Miss Selfridge past the age of 39. (OK, so the last one maybe I agree with but anyway…)

(Go here for more info on how to beat a wear-by date).

The author of these claims clearly hasn’t seen our QVC fashions, right girls? I’m 51 and I live in leggings – Kim & Co, Antthony, Women With Control – so many of our own brands, they just work for my shape. With the right tunic length top above it, there you go – I feel trendy, even. For instance, this Antthony combo is just fab. After all, isn’t 50 the new 40?

Deb in leggingsWhat do you think? Let me know by commenting at the bottom of this blog. Which bits are they right about? Or what do you feel strongly about that’s not been mentioned in the article – any other ‘no-no’s? (ps Antthony our lovely designer is back soon – will keep you informed!)

Judge me book

My weekly look at all things book!

Author of the Week. First this week, I wanted to recommend a fab author, as opposed to a single book. Tess Stimson has been a favourite of mine for a decade or so now – and once I knew I loved her writing, I even bought second-hand copies of her original first titles – enjoyed ‘Pole Position’ in particular. Maybe she resonated with me because she started off in broadcasting? Who knows. But you just know when you like a good book, don’t you?

Author pic of the weekIt was ‘Adultery Club’ – a freebie on a magazine – which first brought her to my attention and I was hooked. I loved the alternate first person narrative and the way she drew the suspense from chapter to chapter – very clever books – and I like ‘clever’!

Do go do some research on her, as I’m sure there will be some wonderful offers on some of her works, there are so many! If you like relationship drama, and getting deep inside the heads of the characters, as well as edge of the seat twists and turns, do try her out! Find out more here.

Who is your own favourite author, whom you’d like to recommend? Leave me a comment below!

Countdown to PG version of Hawaiian Affair!

Countdown to PG version

As mentioned previously, my first novel – currently available on Amazon – is going to be out in the last eBook option yet to be uploaded – the ‘non-steamy’ PG version – on Bank Holiday weekend in August. At an exceptional price! Clue? Less than £2! Maybe much less… more news over the next few weeks!  If you’ve read it did you like it? Did you review it?

There’s been a flurry of additional reviews on amazon of late – now 93 out of 100 FIVE STARS! – across the different titles – so again, thanks to you all! I’m progressing nicely with the Prequel, which will be my next book. We will find out about Sadie’s family background, and more about how she came to be in Monaco in the first place. Meanwhile here’s another lovely review if you haven’t read it already!

Go here to get the steamy version in paperback or complete eBook, on Amazon.

Following Debbie on twitter and being a QVC fan, I had to give this a go as I love romantic stories. I found i could relate to the character of Sadie and thought she was the epitome of the modern woman, juggling working life and kids. The story was very believeable and the steamy scenes were great! I can't wait to read more from Debbie and really glad I downloaded the book. If you love romances then you are sure to love this.’ lucyD1980 – amazon review

The vintage ones have been so popular of late, I thought I’d give you another this week – so here’s a reminder of my lovely pal, Ingrid Tarrant, whom I was on with on Sunday, creating havoc with an ad-hoc strip, live on air in a Yong Kim show – very appropriate since she’s back on again soon with some more of these lovely fashions! Enjoy! Hehe!

26 degrees at nightSNIPPETS

- Now I’m not saying I’m not grateful for the heatwave, but look at this pic of my dashboard showing the temperature.

Nothing unusual you might think? Well it was taken at about 10pm on my way home from work! I hope you managed to keep cool and maybe snapped up the Dyson fan before it went on waitlist – it’s brilliant.

BluBlocker- And talking of the heat, on air last week I was discussing the sunglasses we used to have on QVC many moons ago – called Blublockers. Anyone remember them? Guest called Joe? Joseph? Well they fast became a thread on facebook – did you love them too? I did. What else do you have and still use, which you got from QVC years ago?

Peter Andre- One of our favourites in my household, Peter Andre, this week launched his own channel – great idea! – go to or get the ‘app’!

From live broadcasts in his car to clips and vids from his appearances – I’m not saying I’ll be glued to it, but it seems a great new concept for reaching a fan base.

Who would you like to see have their own channel? I wouldn’t mind a Paul Rudd one – he’d be really funny. Leave me a comment below and let me know!

- And talking of men – kind of – a one liner from a pal’s recent first date, proving in one sentence why there wouldn’t be a second – do you have any like this? The guy apparently said ‘lions are actually the most reasonable of animals’… She posted soon afterwards ‘#I’mGoingToBeSingleForever! Any examples of your own first date disasters? : – )

Wotton Hall- An early heads-up if anyone’s in the Dorking area on Sunday 11th August – I’m helping to run a charity tea rooms at Wotton Village Hall 11am-3pm, in aid of the local church fundraising, and I’ll bring along some copies of 'Hawaiian Affair' to sell and sign, if you’d like to join me!

My little band of merry Beta Readers may also be popping by at some point! It’s behind the Wotton Hatch pub (rh56qq) and there’s lots of parking.

Cat and freezer- And finally this week – courtesy of pal Buffy who works backstage at QVC – a pussycat’s solution to the hot weather!

She turned her back to put some frozen food on the table, and when she turned back round again, there was her cat – certainly knows how to keep cool eh! Lol.

Any solutions for your animals during the heat?

WATCH – Been to the cinema again! Saw the current big screen release, 'Now You See Me'. Sooooo worth watching! I was pretty pleased about how good I found the script and the acting and the general fun factor of this heist movie crossed with a David Blaine show. Woody Harrelson was particularly fab, as was Jesse Eisenberg, not to mention Morgan Freeman and a particularly menacing Michael Caine!

During their performances, the world's greatest illusionists known as "The Four Horsemen" pull off a series of daring heists against corrupt business leaders. The super-team of illusionists shower the stolen profits on their audiences while staying one step ahead of an elite FBI squad in a game of cat and mouse.

Great night out – thoroughly recommended, almost no plot holes (apart from the obligatory car chase, which always loses points in my book) so it gets a high scoring 8.75 from me. Loved it!

Legion Leighton Denny setMorphy Richards Steam Generator

Another little sneaky look ahead for you – and it’s a wonderful new special set from Leighton Denny (above left)! On Monday night, 6th Aug, I’ll be launching the midnight show, including this 8 piece cocktail collection – don’t miss it!

As usual, if you’re a Friday blog reader, you won’t have missed the Morphy Richards Steam Generator Iron (above, right), which is our Today’s Special Value on Saturday – join me Friday night at midnight for the launch!

Plus don’t forget the Honora set of two Keshi Pearl necklaces which are today’s special on Sunday night/Monday – looking forward to seeing Ralph again!

Honora necklacesHe’s flying over specially! And do join us on Monday and Tuesday when we’ve got the Great QVC Summer Sale on air – from northern nights to kitchen to Gems, it’ll be frantic! Then Beauty Day on Wednesday. Busy week eh!

Stop press – competition next week – and do join me back here next week for news of a little Liz Earle hair oil competition!

Best wishes,

    Hi Debs,
Been a while! How are you keeping? I have to confess I haven’t been watching much telly at all the last 6 weeks! I think that photo of you arnd your Mum (looks like sister) is lovely. You’ll have to frame that. She’s gorgeous isn’t she. The one thing I was thinking about from this blog was the leggings thing. I sort of see where they’re coming from! I hate to say it! Leggings aren’t half as ‘in’ as they were a couple of years ago but I’m with you on comfy factor. I really hate the leggings and short top look..just not pretty to see bums and thiighs all around! In my opinion..sure many would disagree. I do like leggings and long tops though, especially with knee high boots.
Hope you have a good thunderstorm. We’ve had some rain.
    Enjoy your weekend,
    Susan x

My goodness Debbie you certainly pack a lot in during your week. I am exhausted reading it all. Loved the blooper with you and Ingrid. How funny. I am like you a shoe addict and come to think of it a bag addict and clothes addict. Well that covers the lot really. lol. What is it with us women, it must be a built in gene, as both my granddaughters are the same and they are only 10 and 3. Thanks for the heads up on Leighton Denny. I love his products and always buy something from his range for me or my daughter. OPI is another favourite. Like you enjoying the sunshine while it lasts, even if a tad too warm sometimes. Enjoy your weekend. Jackie. xxx

    Hi Debbie
talking about things from years ago items bought from Q.V.C. Remember the rollykit, The container that you were able to store things in then roll it up. Well I bought the green and purple one and still use it now I have all the little bits and bobs to do with my art. At one stage it was my sewing box, then my hair slides and grips any thing to do with different hair styles. then nail files polish and remover, when my collection got to big I bought a case for all things related to nail and hand care and that is were I am today using my rollykit.Do you remember them Debbie.Weii by for now have a nice weekend.
    Yours Sincerely

Oh Debs, so much to comment on! I’m going to do it in stages I think.
First thing that got me going was the wear by date article. How dare they tell us when and what to wear because of age!
I don’t look my age and apart from the body being well worn, my mind is still young!! I reckon 60 is the new 40!! I wear leggings often and have recently found skinny jeans that make me feel young and ‘with it’. They give me a spring in my step, or should I say hobble!? I don’t like women who dress too young and over the top, but as you say with the right top or tunic, leggings look good and I think they suit all ages – although perhaps not all body shapes!
I would also like to comment on a remark you made the other night on one of your shows. You said that the average person bought 12 items from QVC a year. However, so far this month I have received 30 items!! Scary huh?m. Must cut down! (I don’t go to shops any more because of mobility problems – does that make it better?).

    Hi Debs,
Love your guide to good books. I went on Amazon and downloaded the Adultery Club – great value at 67p!
Loved the blooper! I love Yong Kim; something else that makes me feel young and ageless! What I really like is that I can wear a size 18 and it looks good! I would normally buy size 22, so makes me feel very slim!
I have a few items now, but would like more as long as they’re on easy pay!
Really pleased you are getting loads of good reviews for your book – you deserve it.
Like the cat’s idea to keeping cool – would like to do that too! Getting a bit fed up with, not the heat, but the humidity, as you break into a sweat with just moving!
There was one clap of thunder and one flash of lightening tonight here and at last some rain, but not torrential and it’s still hot! I think Newhaven has it’s own weather system!
Yes, I do remember Blublockers and still own a number of pairs. I use their yellow lenses to drive at night – brilliant to cut down glare from oncoming traffic. I shall never forget the first ones I bought – I discovered that they took a bit of getting used to, I put the glasses on as I was walking out of the door and misjudged the distance and fell over the step! My son was around and he just fell about laughing, with me joining in! That would have made a good blooper too!
    Think I’ve covered everything now!
Thanks for bringing back some funny memories.
    Cath xx

Sorry re Chris O’Dowd email – thought it was the quickest way of informing as on your hols at the time – seen it on IPlayer yet? – funny how its about what you’ve been delving into/researching recently!lol

    Hi Debbie,
I remember the blublocker sunglasses and am lucky enough still to have a pair. They were part of a set bought from QVC many many years ago where you got 3 pairs of glasses frames each with 3 sets of inter changeable lenses – do you remember them ? I keep my last remaining pair for driving as I find you just can’t beat them, shame QVC can’t bring them back.
I have been a QVC viewer since the very beginning & was saddened when you left so it goes without saying that I am delighted you are back, you have such a great personality.
Keep up the good work. Very kindest regards,
    Wendy. xx

    Hi Debs
I don’t agree with that writer about what you can and can’t wear at a certain age. Personally I think you can pretty much wear what you like at any age as long as you look and feel good and wear the right clothes to suit your shape 🙂
Forgot to say on my post to your last blog I posted a review on Amazon last week for your book and gave it 5 out of 5, would have given it more if I could. Can’t wait for the next one – hopefully not too long to wait?

seeing the Blublockers and yes they were great still have a pair, made me think of the Elvis Presley items you did years ago I had just come back from a trip to Graceland and you were presenting a Elvis Teddy Bear in a white leather jump suit that sung “Love me tender” I just had to have it I spoke to you on air about my trip and the Elvis Teddy is still sitting on my bed to this day and still singing. xx

    Hi Debs
Enjoyed the blog, you do go to good effort with it and good if it turns into a little book club too.
    – have discovered so many new authors due to kindle and good prices/freebie books, what a pleasure that is.
Did you see amazon started a summer sale on kindle, There is Debbie Mccomber and Sheryl Woods who I have read some great reads from, they are family saga types set in modern day.
Also usually good price is a discovery Poppy Dolan who wrote Bad Boyfriends Bootcamp, and Thalie Roland reads too. Infact many more…..
As for the clothes issue, I think different things suit different people due to syling and body shape, you can usually tell what looks good on you! or at least okay!lol
Nice pic of you and your mum, I thought she looked pretty young Debbie and I was very surprised at your age Debbie, I would have thought you nearly 10 years younger!
I have part 1 of your book and am looking out for offer on part 2, if one not soon may be tempted by your bank holiday weekend deal as sounds outstanding! dont let me put you off offering pt 2 though!
Enjoy rest of your week .

    Hi Debs,
I kind of agree with the article….to a point. You see more mature people tend to have a little more weight than the norm, that causes unsightly lumps and bumps while wearing such tight clothes. Everyone wants to look their best but unfortunately not everyone has common sense and so very large people squeeze themselves into very close fitting clothing and look an absolute disaster.
Before everyone complains about my comment, you Deb are not overweight, just nice and cuddly. The overweight I refer to are more near to a size 28 or above, now you might understand to what I am referring to.
Looking forward to your next show,
