A fun day at the ‘office’!

I love my job but it has to be said that some days are better than others, and yesterday was definitely one of those.

I had already had a lovely hour of Isaac Mizrahi Live fashion with the dapper Glen Campbell, which I thoroughly enjoyed, before stepping into Jackie Kabler’s shoes for the first in the new series of Ruth Langsford’s Fashion Edit shows. I was surprised to learn that this is the fourth series of six shows – it doesn’t seem like two minutes since Ruth came to QVC. We’ve often chatted backstage, but it was the first time the two of us had been in front of the cameras together and I hope it won’t be the last. Jackie is back from her travels to pick up the reins for next Thursday’s show at 9pm.

Not only does Ruth have a great eye for fashion, she also has a lovely rapport with our models and if you think it is just ‘on telly’ it’s not. Imagine my surprise when I pressed the button for the lift down to the car park and the doors opened to reveal Ruth and our model Katherine taking lift selfies! I got roped in and the results were pretty funny. This was my favourite pic…

I’m not quite sure what Katherine’s arm was doing, but it looks like she is doing a passable impression of a monkey. We were up and down in that lift several times before the girls got the shots they wanted for Instagram – mine is @juliagroberts if you would like to follow my off screen exploits.

So yesterday at QVC was great fun and it promises to be more of the same today with Doris from Doll10 at 3pm, Marie-Francoise and Kipling featuring on Fashion on Friday today, followed by the fabulous Attitudes by Renee at 6pm, who some of you may remember I met up with in New York last month. I have a suspicion that her Today’s Special Value may well be gone by then, and if it is there could be an OTO – always worth tuning in for.

It’s been a busy week at work and on my day off on Tuesday I had a date at the hospital. This was nothing to do with my CML, this was an orthotics appointment which I had been waiting for for over six months. I have been going to physiotherapy to help strengthen the muscles on the left side of my body, weakened by childhood polio and now being affected by PPS (Post Polio Syndrome).

Although some of the exercises have been helping, my left foot and ankle feel in the wrong position for others to be beneficial and it’s very difficult explaining that, even to trained professionals. The orthotist I saw on Tuesday completely ‘got it’. When I talked about my ankle ‘crunching’ and jumping from one position to another he knew exactly what I meant.

To be honest, I came away from the appointment feeling very emotional – finally someone who I believe is going to help me stay as mobile as I can, for as long as I can. We are going to try custom-made insoles to start with, and then potentially – in a few months time – a leather ankle brace for when my ankle is feeling particularly weak or I’m going to be doing a lot of walking. Chronic conditions, such as the two I have, are all about management and finding out what works best on a day-to-day basis to stay as fit and well as possible, so please keep everything crossed for me that this will work out as well as my CML treatment.

Although I’m ready for a few days off, I’m quite sad to be missing the gardening event all day tomorrow on QVC, as I love gardening. It all kicks off with the launch of the new, improved formula Richard Jackson Flower Power which is our Today’s Special Value, and you can get it online now.

I’ve had amazing results both in the garden and for indoor plants with the original formula. This phalaenopsis orchid has such strong growth that I’ve had to tie it to the window handle for support as a stake just didn’t cut it.  And as for this cyclamen… it has been at death’s door on numerous occasions over the past 12 years – over-watered, under-watered, you name it, it has suffered it and yet it just springs back to life with a bit of Flower Power added to the watering. Even my Christmas cactus is in bloom.

If you haven’t tried it, I would definitely take advantage of the 30-day Money Back Guarantee especially at the Today’s Special Value price!

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend whatever you have planned. My friend, Natalie, a Spurs fan, has invited herself over to ours on Sunday to watch her team slaughter my beloved Crystal Palace… not necessarily a foregone conclusion, but I have asked her not to cheer too loudly!

Much love,
Julia xx

I hope your physio goes well Julia , I’m having the same problem and on the same side as yours. I’m also having physio which is helping but last year I had a right hip replacement so it’s been a bit difficult at times . But I’m pleased to say I’m getting about much better now and keeping my fingers crossed . Take care Gillian

Julia I hope everything goes well with your mobility and that the ankle brace will be a great support. Perhaps Purple leather could be a colour option!!!

Hi Julia I watched you with Ruth really good show sorry to hear about your ankle etc I have been attending hospital because my left ankle swells quite badly and I have arthritis in my feet and ankles and possibly knees too they gave me orthotics to wear in my shoes but the stocking to keep my ankle down makes my shoes too tight so it’s a case of one or the other depending on how it’s feeling on the day the arthritis has flare ups sometimes and then settles again i don’t particularly want to keep taking ibrofrofen all the time though anyway hope you get sorted and feel more comfortable we have a Florida family holiday coming up soon and a few days in London so will definitely be wearing my trainers for support I think enjoy your weekend off take care love Loraine xx
