May has only just arrived, and while I am aware of the old adage “‘nare cast a clout ’til May is out,” I can’t help feeling that summer arrived in full force over the first bank holiday weekend. It was glorious, and we don’t often get to say that about a bank holiday weekend in these somewhat soggy, sodden parts. So hoorah for our early summer!
The bright sunrises and warm sunny days have had me up and about and getting things done. The gym has been top of my list, as I am sure it has for many (or at least thoughts of it anyway). I’ve been a bit lacklustre of late about my fitness. It all stems from my back injury two years ago. I have gradually gotten less and less fit and more and more out of shape. But, for now anyway, I am getting to the gym three or four times a week again. I only pray it continues.
Was anyone else caught out in the wardrobe department when the sun came out? It was a mad scramble to find shorts that were put away last September, and locating those flip flops and lightweight summer shoes was no easy task. I turned up to work in the first few days and was left standing in front of my wardrobe in my dressing room, staring blankly at wool jackets and knitted sweaters. I cobbled something together that was vaguely summer-like (a couple of brightly coloured polo T-shirts, to be precise) but, I don’t mind telling you, those pasty arms of mine needed a touch of Vita Liberata before I could actually go on air!
For those of you who are bemoaning their complexion and skin tone, you should definitely check out the Beauty Pick of The Month from Bareminerals. It’s called Vio-Lit Glow Primer, and it’ll help with evening out your complexion. It can be used under makeup or concealer, over your finished foundation or on its own if you’d like to wear less make up but still want your ‘au natural’ look, to have you positively glowing! I was on air with SJ the other day as she was talking about it and I just thought it sounded great. Remember, because it’s our Beauty POM it has no P&P either!
I worked all through the sunniest and hottest part of the recent weather (i.e. all the way through the Bank Holiday), so I have had a day or two off yesterday and today, and have been revelling in it. I’ve been out and about yesterday meeting up with good friends, first for coffee and cake (I can never say no to cake – I have a sweet tooth that would give a sugar plum fairy tooth ache!).
We went to a really cute little coffee shop that has walls of paper roses and tiny little tables and it had the best cakes. The ones I chose were sugar-free, dairy-free and gluten-free. So, of course, I had two. My logic being that they were so healthy that it would be OK. That’s fair enough, right?
After that, we headed off for cocktails. I am a big fan of a quality cocktail. I don’t drink beer at all as it doesn’t really agree with me, but a well-shaken cocktail gets me every time. It really made me feel like I was on holiday and that it really was summer time.
I have also been spending time on my balcony, which is a total sun trap for a good part of the day, and it has still felt really warm on there even though the temperatures have dropped a little bit. One of the nicest things when it was hot was the soothing sound and cooling cascading water from my Garden Reflections Water Fountain. It is coming up as a TSV on Monday 14th May. It was so simple to set up and has transformed my fairly functional balcony into a little oasis. It has inspired me to get planting and spend more time out there.
The fountain comes in two options.
The one I went for is a very clean contemporary style, which really works for my personal aesthetic. It’s also the more compact of the two in terms of footprint, which again, is perfect for my balcony as it’s quite narrow. It tucks in perfectly for the space and almost looks like it has been designed especially for it. It is a plug-in variety, so you can use it anytime, even when the sun isn’t out. It comes with a 10 metre cable, so you really can place it a good way away from a power point, and with the LED light, which is under the water, you can even enjoy it in the evenings with a magic light-up effect. Friends of mine are coming over in a few days time and they will have their children with them, so I am going to tell them it is a wishing fountain and the little lights under the water are the fairies and water nymphs who live in the fountain. I am saying that I am making that story up for the children, but it’s probably more for my amusement than their’s.
I have had mine on for several hours today and it was so peaceful sitting out there in the sun with the gurgling sound of the water. Like sitting by the banks of a babbling brook in the midst of the countryside. Ahhhhhh.
Gill Gauntlett will be launching it at midnight on Sunday and will be on air with it all through Monday (I’ll be with her at 5pm, along with Michael Perry) so do tune in – it would be lovely to have you with us.
One more thing before I go. In my previous blog, I talked about having gone to Katie Piper’s show and that one of the things she talked about was affirmations. Well, I came across one the other day that I absolutely loved and it felt like a eureka moment, so I thought I would share it with you. It said, “People who focus on whether the glass is half full or half empty are missing the point. What the public should be focusing on is that the glass is always refillable!”
A great reminder that no matter how bad things get or how empty the glass, we can always refill it, and ourselves, with love and positivity.
Until next time,
P.S. Let’s all stay connected this summer. Let’s share our summer with each other. Use #LetsShareSummer on your social media and we can all enjoy it together.
