We’re getting all geared up for our exciting Food Glorious Food event taking place this Tuesday 2nd February here at Q Towers. This will be an afternoon packed full of delicious foods from the likes of Green Seasons, Gower Cottage Brownies, and of course The Real Pie Company represented by the lovely Brett who will be proudly presenting a fantastic Today’s Special Value offer. Well, we do like to spoil our viewers!
This 14-piece selection of pies includes two each of seven mouth-watering chicken and steak flavours. Based in Sussex, The Real Pie Company was founded as a local enterprise 16 years ago, and has established a reputation with its “crammed to the crust” philosophy emphasising the hand crafted, traditional nature of the pies.
Brett spoke to us about what makes The Real Pie Company special:
“We take that little bit longer to ensure our steak, chicken and vegetables are tender and succulent and our gravy infuses all the meaty goodness.
“We hold true to our ‘freshly baked’ principles with all our pies baked in small batches under the watchful eyes of our own chefs to ensure quality. It is an award winning recipe!”
In order to properly explore (read: drool over) the variety of pies on offer this Tuesday, we asked beer expert, Anna, from the fantastic Brewhive, to suggest some pairings with the meaty pies and delicious brews. Over to you, Anna…
Who doesn’t love a pie and a pint? Picking the right brew and best quality pies can raise this simple and satisfying combination to new heights.
Brewhive’s range of quality beers and cider are designed with food-matching first in mind, pairing perfectly with The Real Pie Company’s pies, ‘crammed to the crust’ with the best quality ingredients, brimming with flavour.
With each of these matches, the brew acts as a palate cleanser between each mouthful of rich pastry and mouth-watering filling, making each bite taste as good as the first.
Dark Brew – Steak & Stout Pie or Steak & Mature Cheddar Pie
The rich dark chocolate malt in Brewhive’s Dark Brew is perfect with the British beef steak in any of Real Pie Company’s steak pies, but it’s particularly special with the Steak & Mature Cheddar. The rich creaminess of the darker ale complementing the mature cheddar, and highlighting the underlying sweetness of the cheese and the beef steak.
Alternatively, for a truly classic match, as a traditional style porter the Dark Brew is the ideal accompaniment for the Steak & Stout Pie.
Pale Brew – Steak & Mushroom or Chicken & Mushroom
The earthy notes typical of English-grown hops are really brought to the fore when paired with mushrooms, which is why I’ve selected the English Endeavour I.P.A. to drink with these two pies.
With the Steak & Mushroom Pie, the lighter ale contrasts and cleanses and the crystal malt brings out the residual sweetness of the slow-cooked beef. The citrus aromas of the English Endeavour hop, featured in the Pale Brew, go brilliantly with the tender and juicy chunks of chicken in the Chicken & Mushroom Pie.
Blonde Brew – Chicken & Root Vegetable Pie or Pepper Steak
Blonde Brew is a smooth and balanced Pilsner and a wonderful foil for a Pepper Steak, its lighter character allowing the full flavour of the steak to shine through. The refreshing nature of the lager will also tone down the heat from the crushed black peppercorns.
The German Magnum hops featured in Blonde Brew have a lightly spicy and citrusy aroma that enhances the light spiciness of the seasonal vegetables in the Chicken & Root Vegetable Pie. The bright flavour of the beer really complements the tender chicken breast that fills the pie.
Cider Brew – Chicken, Bacon, Leek in White Wine
Golden and sparkling Cider Brew is a delicious treat when served with a handmade Chicken, Bacon & Leek Pie. There’s nothing quite like the combination of sweet apples and bacon, and the crisp apple notes and clean flavour of the cider contrast perfectly with the rich and creamy sauce that surrounds the tender chicken and fresh slices of leek.
