With pink being my favourite colour, there was no way I was going to miss this story on the news! This beautiful gem will certainly never be forgotten and it is a piece that all of us (except one lucky lady) can only ever dream about owning. I think I would be terrified to wear it wouldn't you?! But I'd certainly give it a good go… imagine!
Dubbed the 'Pink Star', the huge diamond mounted 59.6 carat was bought by an unnamed man in an auction in Geneva on behalf of an anonymous person he represented. The gemstone was sold at Sotherby's semi annual jewellery sale which took place in a heavily guarded hotel show room.
As the hammer was brought down on the auction, the bid was declared a world record – the highest amount ever paid for a diamond, including commission fees. It exceeded its pre-sale estimate of £38.07 million and smashed the previous record held by the Graff Pink – a 24.78 carat pink diamond bought by London based jeweller Laurence Graff in 2010 for 45.44 million Swiss francs!
The Pink Star was cut and polished from a 132.5 carat rough diamond mined by De Beers in Africa in 1999. I just had to let you know about it in case you missed it last week in the media!
Hope your Christmas shopping is going well and I can't believe its only six weeks until Christmas day. I just can't wait… I love Christmas!
