An exciting week for me!

Kathy in her wetsuit!Hello again!

I did a rare thing, last week – I went out on a mid-week evening! Normally I am safely at home curled up on the sofa with Olley ready for an early night before an early start for the Morning Show next day, or possibly (more likely!) doing chores and, as my Dad used to call it when I was a teenager, 'faffing around' and getting to bed later than I should!

Zalza DVDBut last week we had tickets to see Flavia and Vincent from Strictly Come Dancing in their stage show Midnight Tango. Olley was away in the end so my friend Alison joined me for a girls' night out. We absolutely loved the show – it was full of amazing energy and incredible dance moves.

It's produced by Arlene Phillips and features some of the best tango dancers in the world alongside Flavia and Vincent, and a world renowned tango band. It just highlighted to me what a dreadful dancer I am – I hope you didn't see me with Flavia and her 'other' dance partner Russell Grant when they were with us a few weeks ago for the launch of their Zalza dance video. I may have been an athlete in my younger days, but it didn't bestow me with any sense of rhythm and I think I have two left feet. Or maybe three! Russell and I were like the naughty children at the back of the class, trying to keep up with Flavia. It was great to see Russell again – he used to come onto my AfterNine show on TVam in the early 1990s, but I haven't seen him since. He's a lovely, kind, warm-hearted man.

If I spend a bit of time with the Zalza Ultimate Dance Fitness DVD I think there may be some hope for my dancing future – the DVD is actually a great way to learn some classic Latin dances, as Flavia takes us through a series of training steps before we try to put it all together to music. She and Russell will be back on QVC putting us through our paces on Monday 20th May, so if you missed their last visit, make sure you have your dancing shoes ready to join in. It's a great way to exercise and have fun, while learning some proper dance steps.

Kathy and Bex swimming in the lakeBut if there is one form of exercise I can do, it's swimming. I haven't lately because I've had some problems with my elbow but it is slowly mending and I was beginning to feel that it was time to get wet again when Bex asked me to take her to a session to help her prepare for a triathlon event that she has entered for next month. The only issue was that the swimming was in a lake. But hey-ho, why not! So last Sunday morning we were up early and off to the lake. There were wetsuits to hire (I wouldn't have got further than my big toe without) and tea and bacon butties for after. I have to say, I always think that a wetsuit has to be the most unflattering outfit ever invented, but after a while of taking Slim-be my figure is beginning to find itself again – I didn't feel too embarrassed once I'd managed to squeeze into it. We have a Today's Special Value Slim-Be offer next week (Tuesday 14th May) so if you're thinking you'd like to lose a few pounds before the summer really arrives, join me on the Morning Show or at midday on Tuesday – wearing a wetsuit is not compulsory, though!

Spotting a turkey! We decided the only way to get into the water was to leap straight in. The sun came out and, except for the first few minutes when I had to fight the urge to GET OUT because the 12 degree water was SO COLD on my face, I actually rather enjoyed it! And the 'holier than thou' feeling of having done something good lasted all day! Something completely random happened on the way home – we were almost there when we passed a turkey strolling up the hill. How do you explain that?!

Barney in our motorhomeFinally, a personal note to Christine, who sadly lost her beloved cavalier spaniel William to heart failure not long ago and to whom I promised a photo of our lovely Barney enjoying an outing in our motorhome. I hope this raises a smile…

With best wishes to you all, take care.

    Hi Kathy
AW…!!! Thank you, thank you and thank you again for the thoughtful addition of the photo of Barney for me.. Oh how he’s lifted me, he’s so gorgeous XX What a lovely and welcome surprise when I logged on and read your blog.. Seeing his little face there,I said out loud “AW!!!”Then I read your note, it did make me smile and I called David my husband in, he also said “AW” and let me tell you, he’s not one easily moved…
We had a very special break in Conway and being surrounded by the mountains and being on the beach that William loved so much was very cathartic and healing.. Ous Son Gareth was admitted to Hospital while we were away for urgent surgery on his spine, he d been in a crash some months ago and it was found he had done a lot of damage to his neck (This is Isabella s daddy!!) He insisted we go for our break and you can imagine how we were feeling, but a lot of praying and support from others lifted us through. My dad used to say, if you have faith as a mustard seed you can move a mountain and as we were surrounded by mountains it seemed very apt.. Gareth is home after surgery and they are amazed at his progress, he s going to be a while recovering so I now go round to nurse him and look after Isabella while mum is at work… His text to us after the op (as he has very little voice yet) said “Love you millions mum and dad and the Dr “NAILED IT!!!” Not literally you understand, but in that the Dr had done a great job…
Looking at you with your Bex, warmed my heart and I thankful for our wonderful children who are a blessing and we must help them achieve their goals in any way we can don t we Kathy?
Thank you for your lovely words that I know come from a genuine heart and mean so much.. Not just to me, but you have time and care for others… Even though you are so busy, you make time and effort, a rare gift but you have it in spades!!
Finishing now to get another look at your gorgeous boy, Barney.. Special, very special.. xx
Take care Kathy and love to all your lovely family

Hi Kathy Your tiredness seems to have been sorted, did you take B12 vitamins as suggested or how did you sort it. The reason i am asking is i’m feeling tired these days and am tempted to try B12 vitamins. You must live in a lovely part of the country, stray turkeys, country side and swimming in a lake, how lovely. The photo of Barney is lovely, made me smile. Babs x

    Hi Debbie
Barney is a bearded collie, chocolate in colour rather than the more usual slate grey, although his coat is pretty pale now. When he was a pup he was really dark chocolate, and looked like a brown bear cub but with a waggy tail. His breeder had named him Barnaby and we shortened it to Barney. A great name for a cat or a dog, and one of our backstage girls has named her baby son Barney – i think it’s a name that suggests great character!
He is actually the same breed as Dale’s dog Toby, but he look different partly because of his age – 14 in JUly – but also because we have his coat trimmed early in the summer. He loves to go in the water when we walk him along the River Thames close to where we live and his undercoat gets matted and stays damp, giving him sore skin. And I think it musdt weigh him down – he suddenly seems to have more energy after his haircut! i love him when it’s grown back a bit, as in the photo when I think he looks like a teddy bear. I should give a photo to Charlotte and Will from Charlie Bears to see whether Barney might inspire them to design a bear in Barney’s honour!
    Hope you’re well.
    Best wishes

    Hello Susan
good to hear form you again.
Yes – I had a good week last week. I still get waves of tiredness but I suppose that’s normal, considering what I try to pack into each day!
My elbow wasn’t too bad although it was sore afterwards. I’ve been given the go ahead from my physio as long as I give myself rest days. It was doing the laundry that caused the most pain at the weekend, so I’m trying to persuade the men in the house to take over!! (some hope…!)
Bex will be doing her triathlon at Thorpe Park on the 9th of June. I will be her support team!
    Take care, and talk soon.

    Hi Yvie
I had no idea there was a turkey farm near us, but apparently up by Woobnurn Common somewhere? it was certainly legging it up the hill at a fair pace – a quest for freedom!
what a lovely part of the world we live in!

    Hello Christine
I’m really glad you liked the photo of Barney – it was meant to help you feel better. It sounds as though things have been tough for you lately, I hope Gareth continues to do well. At least having you to help, and to look after Isabella will keep his spirits up. It sounds as though he is very positive at the moment – hope that lasts.
    i wish you all well.
Take care and very best wishes

Hi Abi. I’m pleased you enjoy our Morning Style shows. I think you must mean the jumper and scarf that I’m wearing in our short promotion film. It’s actually a poncho by Join, fairly pricey at around £100 but gorgeous quality. And the scarf was one of our Lola Rose styles which we have in a variety or colours and patterns but find it hard to keep any in stock! Have a look at our website to see what we have at the moment.
Hope you can catch the next show.

    Hi Jill
Thanks for the compliment, the eyeshadow I’ve been using is Laura Geller’s pallete but unfortunately the colour option that I have is sold out at the moment. (item no 200870) Maybe it’s worth having a look at Laura’s other baked eyeshadows to see whether there is something that catches your eye?
    Glad you enjoy the shows!
    Take care

    Hi Babs
I’m so sorry – I did reply to you but must have done something wrong as my answer isn’t there!
I am feeling better but still get tired – I think it’s just about pace of life a lot of the time. Also, although my children aren’t exhausting toddlers any more, I still put a fair amount of energy into them – both physical and emotional.
I did start taking Vit B12 by mouth, also a good multivit with antioxidants, Vitamin D and fish oils. I think a good diet AND supplements can help, but if you’re feeling too bad I’d advise a chat with your GP as well. I have really made an effort to get enough sleep, too – we need to look after ourselves, don’t we – no one is going to do it!!
I hope you’ve enjoyed a little sunshine recently – that can have a marked effect on our mood and really lift the spirits.
    with best wishes, take care

    Hi Kathy,
Never written before but after reading your comment about tiredness it reminded me of how I have felt for a long time. I kept thinking that it was my age (50) but eventually went to the GP and found out it was an underactive thyroid. I have gained weight as well so hopefully now I am taking my medication, I will get some energy back and lose some weight !!
Love watching QVC, just ordered a Marla Wynne cardi you were wearing !

    Hi Kathy,
Just wanted to say “Thank you” for a great show on Wednesday morning.I really look forward to seeing it and hearing your comments. I also like to see a shorter model as alot of us are under 5’6″. I am 5′ 4″ and find alot of the maxi dresses and trousers too long, so please bring in more shorter lengths. I am sure i am not alone in asking for this. Keep up the good work , You are looking wonderful.Well done.

    Hi Diane
The wedges you’re talking about are from Wallis, but I bought them last year. I have to say, they’re really comfy.
The other pair that I often wear, that are in a lighter tone of grey are last year’s from Clarks – I have a show with some new styles (not sure about wedges yet, though) next Friday so it might be worth checking our website if you can.
Sorry I can’t be of more help.
    Take care

    Hello Jane
Thanks for telling your story, I know a couple of late forties/fifties women who have had the same. I’ve been having my TSH levels monitored for a while now – I’m borderline and not on medication at the moment. It does make me proud of the weight I’ve managed to lose, because everything is stacked against you, isn’t it?
Last time I chatted with my GP he said he thinks the tiredness is due to a multi-layered situation – work, early mornings, home, children, life etc etc. I’m trying to give myself a bit more time to relax as well as eating well and taking the supplements. I really hope you feel the difference very soon.
Glad you enjoy QVC – Marla Wynne will be back on June 11 – I love her designs!
    Best wishes

    Hi Janet
Great to hear from you – and I’m so glad you enjoyed Wednesday’s Morning Style – thank you for taking the trouble to let me know. I’m not sure whether you managed to watch the day before at 10am – fashion by Annalee and Hope? We had Amanda as one of our models – at 5’6″ she is shorter than most of our regulars – and also Kate, who is taller but a size 16. It was good to have different sizes and shapes. You’re right – you’re not the only person who asks for shorter models, but you’d be surprised how few are available. Also, it’s harder than it looks to model for us – it’s not just about wearing the clothes well. We do hear you, and are trying to please you at least some of the time!
In fact, when I last worked with Jenny, our guest from Together fashion, I asked if she would model for us as she looks fab at 5’2″ – the next time a few of her outfits feature on Morning Style she’ll be there!!
    Best wishes
