Filming with David Austin Roses

I’ve made it!

Brad Pitt has one, so does Tom Cruise. Now I have one too. I’ve got a body double!

It all happened last week when we were filming at the beautiful David Austin rose gardens. I was filming a promotion for QVC, nothing complicated, simply feeding some roses with Flower Power.

We did the main shot and then Anna, our director, decided we needed a close-up shot. By then I’d nipped off (to get some tea and cake) so one of our crew, Ollie, (pictured left) was volunteered as my stand in.

H Plant Invigorator - 502959e did the shot in one take (I normally take at least three attempts) so I reckon that’s it. From now on, I’ll be resting in between takes (hopefully in a Winnebago!) while Ollie does the close-ups!

Whilst at the gardens, I had a good chat with David Austin, who told me that it has been one of the best years ever for his roses, and Michael Marriott (David Austin’s Technical Manager) who mentioned that they use Plant Invigorator to help with pest and disease control.

I’ve been using the Invigorator once a week in my garden and it’s really showing the benefits. The sweet peas are a delight and the alstroemerias (‘Planet’ series, planted last year) are outstanding. In the greenhouse, my tomatoes have reached their seventh truss.

I’m going to pinch out the tops shortly as I want them to ripen earlier than last year; I pinched them out in mid-August and by the time the last trusses had ripened in October the flavour wasn’t as good.

Everything is getting fed regularly with Flower Power and you can really see the effects of all that extra potash. One of my pots of geraniums has fifteen huge flower heads on it, it’s incredible.

Apart from watering and feeding, my other main task is slug and snail control. It’s one of the worst years ever and I was pleased to read that the Royal Horticultural Society recommend the ferric phosphate pellets (like the safer, and organic, pellets that we sell on QVC) to control them.

I’ve got this coming weekend off so there’s plenty of time for gardening. I’m also doing a day trip to my first ever festival so let’s hope it doesn’t rain!

Happy gardening!
