I’ve definitely been getting into the Christmas spirit this week, and not just by wearing sparkly tops and Christmas-themed outfits on air for the Christmas Morning Show… After work one day, Olley and I visited the beautiful display of lights at ‘Christmas at Kew Gardens’. This is a trail that takes you around the stunning grounds with many of the mature trees lit up with magical displays. There are moonlit woods and laser gardens, a festive flotilla of glowing boats that create shimmering reflections in the lake and over a million tiny pea lights twinkling in the darkness. The finale is a magnificent Disneyesque music and light display at the iconic Palm House.
The illuminations are stunning in themselves, but they also help you see the heritage trees that they festoon in a different light (no pun intended!) – the beautiful bark and the majestic shapes and detail of the trees are highlighted in a way that daylight can’t.
Kew Gardens is close to QVC, only about a half hour’s walk, but I’ve never been there before. Now that I’ve seen how beautiful it is in darkness I have resolved to visit in every season over the coming year in daylight, to enjoy what I’m sure will be amazing botanical displays of planting and nature.
There were more lights to admire over the weekend when we visited Bath to enjoy lunch with friends and visit our son Billy and his girlfriend Mel, who live nearby. The famous Christmas Market was in full swing and absolutely packed – it’s full of festive atmosphere which is helped by the classic architecture of Bath Abbey and the Roman Baths.
In the past when I have been to this market, I have bought a variety of things from the stalls like Christmas decorations and food such as local cheeses and handmade chocolates. I resisted this year, though, because I’ve already bought all I need from QVC – our Home and Kitchen department has developed so much in the past year or two. It’s worth having a look, I’ve solved several of my ‘what to buy for so-and-so’ problems with our Snowdonia cheese gift box, and the classy and affordable Baton Library from Hotel Chocolat.
Inspired by our outings to see the lights, Olley and I have decorated our home over the weekend too. Pretty much everything has come from QVC over the years, and I’ve treated myself to a couple of new items this year too. I love almost all the classy decorations by Alison Cork, one of my favourites being the set of clip on birds which are still available for just £12. And I’ve bought a set of lights and also the explosion LED lights from Home Reflections – there are some great price reductions so have a look on our website if your home has a dark corner you’d like to brighten up.
Christmas is going to be a little different for me this year. I’ll tell you my plans for the day itself in my next blog, but in the meantime, I hope all is calm and relaxed in your household with lists written and most of it planned if not completed! Good luck!!
Best wishes to you, and take care
Love Kathy x
