With the onset of the chillier weather, it’s nice to be able to plan some hibernation time spent enjoying the comforts of the indoors: a roaring fire, a classic film on the telly, all topped off with some delicious food and drink.
While we can’t guarantee that there will be anything worth watching on the TV, we do have some fantastic new gourmet brands to tempt your tastebuds with this season!
These five brands all have a couple of things in common. They are all UK-based small businesses, run by people who genuinely have a passion for terrific food of the highest standard. Feast your eyes…

The Original Cake Co
“Well we’ve been baking [cakes] for over 40 years so I suppose you could say we know a thing or two about cake.”
Everyone loves a good piece of cake, but how often do you buy what looks like a great cake, only to be disappointed?
The Original Cake Company pride themselves on the fact that their cakes truly taste as good as they look. They’ve been baking them for over 40 years so I suppose you could say they know a thing or two about cake.
Every cake is hand-baked and decorated so they are as cake should be, just like the homemade ones you remember. Not a dry fruitcake or a tasteless chocolate cake leaves their bakery – only the tastiest cakes pass their stringent quality control tests (it’s a tough job but someone needs to do it!) and that is why we are offering a great value selection of their cakes so you can try them for yourselves.
From Traditional Originals Range to buttery sweet Proper Flapjacks, they are about more than just fruit cake (although they do that very well) and we hope our taster pack will give you an idea of what how great all their cakes are!
“Brewing has more stages than winemaking and every component of the beer needs to be just right.”
After more than a year spent getting the brews just right and sourcing the perfect ingredients, Edinburgh-based Brewhive opened their doors in August 2015.
Brewhive see beer as having as much of a role in fine dining as wine. Beer, with its variety and complexity, goes beautifully with so many dishes, from spicy Indian curries to indulgent chocolate desserts.
Brewing has more stages than winemaking and every component of the beer needs to be just right – the water, malt, yeast and hops. Hops are to beer as grapes are to wine, and Brewhive have sourced theirs from across the globe to bring flavour and aroma to each beer.
Take the Dark Brew Chocolate Malt Porter. The chocolate malt is roasted longer than usual, giving rich chocolate and vanilla flavours as well as bringing colour to the brew. American Summit hops are then added to lend bitterness and further depth of flavour. You could pair this equally well with seared scallops, a steak and Stilton pie. or to round off a meal with a Black Forest gateau. Try it – you’ll hardly believe how versatile beer can be!
“We’ve hand-crafted gorgeous and supremely munchable chocolate and mixed it with natural flavours, chewy chunks, sugary caramels, sweetshop treats and exotic spices.”
Gnaw Chocolate was launched in 2011 by Matt and Teri Legon as they decided to embark on a cocoa-dusted mission to bring the fun back into high quality chocolate. At Gnaw, with the help of their ‘squirrel chocolatiers’, they’ve hand-crafted gorgeous and supremely munch-able chocolate, before mixing it with natural flavours, chewy chunks, sugary caramels, sweetshop treats and exotic spices. In short, anything that makes it even more scoffable – if that’s even possible.
You can get your paws onto two of their bespoke Goodeee boxes, with flavours to tantalise your taste buds including Rocky Road, Banoffee Pie, Lemon Meringue and more. Or treat yourself to their Mini Bar Gift Collection: five small bars of their most popular creations, full of Gnaw natural flavours and utterly unctuous chocolate. Every last one is made with love at their nest in – wait for it – ‘Gnawfolk’.
Scarlett & Mustard
“The ethos of the business is simple: to use, where possible, locally-sourced ingredients, and to avoid using any artificial flavours, colours or additives.”
Scarlett & Mustard is a small family business based in Suffolk run by husband-and-wife team Sandy and Julian. The business started when they realised there was a real need for tasty, natural condiments because the ones available in the supermarket were boring and bland! The products lend themselves to busy family lives – they are highly versatile and can be used in many different ways to transform meals into truly tasty platefuls for everyone.
The ethos of the business is simple: to use (where possible) locally-sourced ingredients, and to avoid using any artificial flavours, colours or additives. You can rely on the products to whip up quick and easy meals with no fuss. They have stacked up fifteen Great Taste Awards so far by following this ethos.
Sandy told us “We want to make life as easy and tasty as possible for busy families – anyone can use our products straight from the bottle or jar, or to cook with. They are incredibly versatile, user-friendly and above all healthy. We use rapeseed oil from a local farm – this means not only are we supporting our local farmers, but rapeseed oil is fantastic to cook with as it has a high burn point, low saturated fat and greater levels of Omega 3, 6 and 9 oils than olive oil, making it a great healthy alternative.”
