Despite having told you on last week’s blog that I would be presenting last Sunday morning, I wasn’t able to, as I have come down with a nasty bout of summer flu (big thanks to Debs Flint for covering my shift, by the way) and judging by the reaction to my post on Instagram (@juliagroberts if you want to follow me), quite a few of you have had it too. Mine started with a blocked nose and mild cough last Thursday and rapidly escalated into feeling dreadful, a racking cough, aching muscles, a dripping nose and a sore throat – ‘the works’, you might say. Monday was the worst, but after a mild improvement on Tuesday, I seemed to go downhill again Wednesday, particularly the cough. As a result, I will be off from QVC until at least next Tuesday.
I’m really disappointed, as I was looking forward to trying tomorrow’s TSV and showing you brighter, whiter teeth. I am one of those people who has considered tooth whitening over the years, but always been nervous about traditional methods and sensitivity issues. The new Platinum Pro Whitening System is the updated version from LAB and promises even better, longer lasting results than previous editions.
Unfortunately, until I get rid of my cough, I won’t be able to try it, as you have to keep the unit in your mouth for sixteen minutes and I don’t have that long between coughs. Still, I will report back when I’ve eventually tried it and if you don’t want to miss out on the TSV offer, you could still get it under our 30 day money back guarantee. It’s already available and if the results are anything like this picture, I can’t wait. By the way, it’s also on 3 easy pays!
Well, can you believe we are in another new month! With it being the 1st of August last Wednesday, it means we are less than two months away from our 25th anniversary. More from 2009/10 later in this blog. But August’s arrival also means focusing on a new gemstone and this month it is peridot. Apparently, it was originally named after the old French word for gold, ‘peritot’, a much nicer word than ‘or’ in my opinion. It was because of the gold-ish flecks in the olive green colour and although peridot only comes in green tones, they can vary in intensity and depth, depending on how much iron is in the earth where they have been found. It’s said to be the ‘Gem of the Sun’ – how appropriate for the time of year it represents, and goodness knows we’ve seen plenty of it this year! It is also thought to promote clear thinking and a good heart.
A couple of pieces to look out for include this rather stunning 9ct gold ring with a 2.5 carat peridot in centre stage, flanked by diamonds. I think I prefer peridot set in yellow metal, as it enhances the colour, so maybe the ‘old’ French had a point! I also like this dragonfly necklace. I’m thinking of getting it for my mum, as she will be ninety-two on August 13th and she loves dragonflies and butterflies.
There’s also a pair of earrings to match, but they won’t be for my mum as she doesn’t have pierced ears.
The arrival of August also means it’s Fashion Month on QVC. We have a two-day event next Friday and Saturday and lots of great shows to look out for. There are ten TSVs, including the first TSV from Joules next Friday, and do also remember the weekly Big Deals on the Style channel, which, this month, are from H by Halston, Bronx, Peter Kaiser and Nina Leonard.
So, time for our look back to 2009/10. November saw lots of us from QVC attending the Butler & Wilson 40th Anniversary party at KoKo in Camden. Simon had brought out a new coffee table book earlier in the year to celebrate, and I’m very proud to say mine is signed by the man himself. I’m pretty sure we sold them on QVC, so you may even have a copy… hang on to it, as there weren’t millions printed!
As an aside, we will be celebrating Simon’s 23rd anniversary of being on QVC this month – my first show with him is next Saturday at midday – I wouldn’t dare be sick for that. I had to delay my holiday flight so that I could do his show and then I have a two-hour show with him the following Sunday (19th) also at midday, the day after I get home. I’m not scared of him, honestly, and neither is gorgeous model Ali, who has also booked her holiday around his dates.
In December, a few of us went on another QVC outing, this time to see Lulu in concert with Chaka Khan and Anastasia at the Hammersmith Apollo. She really has tremendous energy and I’m not even going to say those three annoying words ‘for her age’!
December also saw yet another journalist wanting to come into QVC and try their hand at selling stuff on the telly. This time it was Vincent Graff, from the Daily Mail, and his product range of choice was cakes. Glynn Christian was the guest presenter alongside us, if I remember correctly. It was shortly after that, in March 2010, that I went on the Diet Chef plan and lost a stone and a half in weight.
I’d obviously been either partying too hard or working too hard, or maybe a bit of both, because January saw me have a massive psoriasis flare-up. I’ve always had sensitive skin issues, but this was horrendous. I am eternally grateful to our beauty expert, Ali Young, for her advice and the pure oils she provided me with. I had to stop using virtually everything on my skin and hair. No Cleansers, moisturisers, shampoos, body washes … and minimal make-up. How I continued to do my job I don’t know. It was quite amusing later on in the year, though, when I was patch-tested. I was told to take all my beauty products with me – I think they expect between ten and fifteen. I had a hundred and ten …. they almost ran out of skin! I can see the funny side now but I had to wear all the patches for three days without showering on the hottest three days of the year.
In April we had the volcanic cloud. It affected quite a few of our guests, particularly Americans, who were unable to fly in. We were managing okay, but it was a bit tricky when Marjolein Brugman couldn’t get to us for her Pilates TSV. I was asked to swap roles and be the ‘expert’ guest for the day as I’m such a fan. I must say it was a little weird after fifteen years of ‘leading’ the sell. We also had a Pilates masterclass customer event that September.
In May, QVC launched on ITV. I wonder how many of you first became aware of QVC through those late night ITV shows? Simon Biagi and I hosted the first one and I think our first TSV may have been from Dyson.
Just before I finish the look back, I thought I’d share the QVC 2009 Christmas card with you. It was one of two shot by Kathy Taylor’s husband, Alan Olley, and is my second favourite of all the Christmas cards we’ve had. My favourite will be on next week’s blog.
Well, I’m going to finish there. Hoping you are coping okay with the heat – rain didn’t last long, did it!
I’ll update you on our building work progress next week, as it doesn’t look that different at the moment, but they have actually done loads.
